J.P. MASON End Notes: The bride is listed as Martha Susan STROWD. In the index of marriages found at N.C. Archives she is listed as Martha STROWD. When I went to the Orange County Courthouse and looked at the original certificate I noted that each letter in the name Martha had ////// thru them and Susan written in beside Martha. On the microfilm those slash marks do not appear, nor is the surname of STROWD readable. In searching for this great-grandmother of mine, I find these first names given in her children's marriages and obits, plus Orange County Census for the years 1850 (age 14)-1860 (age 23)-1870 (age 32)-1880 (also age 32). Susannah, Julia, Cornenia, Susa, Ann, Rebecca, Correnia, Unknown, and Martha. Susan GILLIAM STROWD was married (1) to Andrew STROWD in 1858. Andrew died in the Civil War. His will is found in Orange Co. NC. No children survived this marriage. Susan Anne died 17 June of 1899, Alamance County, NC and is buried in Haw River Cemetery , Haw River, NC, next to her son-in-law Luther L. CATES. Her tombstone reads "about 60". Alvis ANDREWS married two more times after Susan's death. (2) Lena OAKLEY (3) Martha "Fannie" EDWARDS He died 4 Feb 1926 and is buried at Carrboro Cemetery with no marker.
