History of Elon College #3 Elon College for many years got all of its water from a series of wells. The first was placed in operation in 1925. Other wells followed as the town's needs grew, and by 1966 there were three more in use. In later years, the town has received some water from Burlington. It was unique that in spite of the fact that the Christian Church had two institutions in Elon College, the college and the orphanage, there was no church apart from the college, for many years. There was a Christian Church organized in 1891, but it used college facilities for worship services. The first church building was not for the Christian denomination but for the Baptists. It was in 1948 that the First Baptist Church was built at Holt and Trollinger Avenues. In 1968 the church moved to a new educational building on Lawrence Avenue and now a modern sanctuary sits on Highway #100 adjacent to that educational facility. Expansion plans are now underway. The Elon College Community Church built a facility in 1959 on North Williamson Avenue. It first was the Christian Church, but later became part of the United Church of Christ in the merger of the Christian and Reformed denominations. The first public school in the community came at the end of the 19th century, the exact date not definite. The school was a one room frame structure with one teacher and 28 pupils. It operated as did most in the area, on a four month term. It was in 1912 that a large building was erected for the Elon College Public School on Haggard Avenue. That building later was used as a middle school, and it now is a part of the operations of the college. A new building was erected in 1968 to house the Elon Elementary School. To be continued...#4
