Am looking for the families of Garrison and Meadors of Alamance Co and prior to that Duplin Co. N.C. My Jane Garrison was b. 22 Sept. 1785 on Haw River in what is now Alamance Co. She was the dau. of Jedediah Garrison b. abt 1748-50, supposedly in Duplin Co. and Jane (Williams) Garrison, also of Duplin Co. Jane Garrison married Barnabus Meadors b. 1783 in N.C. (county unknown). They went to Banks Co. GA. Would really like to know the father/parents of Jane Williams. They were in Edgefield Co., S.C. at one time, prior to going to GA. Anyone have any clues to these families? Thanks, Sue Ashby >> Hello Sue, We have corresponded previously about your Garrisons. From the research that I have done on the Alamance/Orange County Garrisons, most of the Garrisons there descend from a Garrett Garretson of New Castle County, Delaware: Garret Garretson Will written and probated in New Castle, Delaware, Christiana Hundred, 21 January 1755; probated 17 February 1755. Misc. 1.23. Wife, Mary; son John; sons. Henry, George, Garret and Jacob; two daughters, Ann and Rebecca; daughter, Eleanora. Exc. son, John; wife, Mary. Overseer, William Armstrong.(Calendar of Delaware Wills, 1754-1756, New Castle County, pages 52-53. Henry Garretson(Garrison), son of the above, settled in Orange County, now Alamance, ca 1750 when that area was opened for settlement at that time. I would suspect that your Jedediah may himself have come from New Castle or perhaps his father. Duplin was not established as a county until 1750, although I feel sure that there were some settlers there prior to it's becoming a county. The fact that he moved to Orange in the vicinity of the Henry Garrison family, could mean that they were aware of each others existence, and perhaps stimulated Jedediah's move from Duplin to Orange. I would not say that they were brothers, more likely cousins, as Garret Garretson's will did not name a Jedediah. There were Williams also who settled in nearby Caswell County in the 1750s. Perhaps this was also a connection to the Orange/Alamance area. The family of William Armstrong, named as overseer in the will of Garret Garretson, also had ties to Orange/Alamance. Mary Armstrong was wife to Alexander Mebane, Jr. of Orange/Alamance. Hope that this helps some in your search. Best regards, John Fox Winston Salem, NC
