Hi All, I finally got the pension records for one Rachel HOLT WEBSTER widow of Charles WEBSTER on the Thursday before Christmas. Charles and Rachel were married in Orange Co. Sept. 10, 1807. Besides not remembering what year she was married, she also has to be wrong about the age of her daughter Caty. (Catherine WEBSTER GRAVES RUSSELL) If Charles died circa 1814 and this paper is dated 1869 Catherine would have to have been born before 1814 making her at least 55. But even with these problems to solve there is so much more here. For instance, now I know that my William is the son of Charles and Rachel. That Catherine is his sister and John his brother. I don't have anything on this John, but I do have more on Catherine and William. William had a son that he named John James and this John married Eliza Jane ISLEY on Oct. 02, 1858. Eliza's parents are Levi ISLEY and Sarah SHARP who were married about 1828. Sarah's parents are Sebastian SHARP and Catherine GARRETT married about 1793. Another son was Wiley G. Webster who married Eliza Jane SHARP on May 22, 1869. Eliza Jane SHARP's parents are Joel SHARP and Elizabeth ANTHONY married on Sept. 04, 1832 in Orange Co., NC Rachel and Charles would be my 4th Great grandparents and William and Anna my 3ed Great grandparents, Wiley and Eliza Sharp my 2nd Great grandparents Oh, I have NO info on Anna Ray maybe she is out there hiding in someone's database<g>. Hope you all had a great Christmas and a fun New Years Day and that this year will bring us all a new brick wall. (I'm tired of the old ones)<g>. Mary Ellis One paper dated or stamped Jun 4 1869 say's On this 18th day of May A.D. 1869, before the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace personally appeared Rachel Webster, who, being duly sworn, deposeth as follows: I am the widow of Charles Webster, deceased, who was a private in Captain James Graham's Company 3ed Regiment N.C. in the war of 1812 (?or) 14, that my maiden name was Rachel Holt; that I was lawfully married to said deceased in the County of Orange, State of North Carolina, by Michael Holt Esq, on or about the (can't read the day) of year 1803 or 1804; that I have by said marriage the following children, whose ages and dates of birth are correctly set forth, to wit: William Webster about 58 years old, John Webster 52 years old and Caty Russell 40 years old. (then the rest of the page. On another page it say's (about half way down this page) She further declared that said Charles Webster her husband, died in the service of the United States as aforesaid at Norfolk in the State of Virginia somtimes in the year 1814, of typhoid fever contracted on ??????in the service. She also declares that she has remained a widow ever since the death of said Charles Webster and that she has not in any manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the rebellion in the United States; and she hereby appoints R.W. Walker Esq of Washington, D.C. as her lawful Attorney, with power of substitution, and authorizes him to present and prosecute this claim, and to receive her pension certificates. The following are the names date of births and places of residence of all the children of her deceased husband who were under sixteen years of age at the time of his death, Wm. Webster, John Webster, Katy Russell of Murphy Russell all of whom reside in Alamance County. My Post Office address is Curtis Mill Alamance County N. Carolina. _______________________________________ Lewis Lutterloh and John Webster signed this paper stating that she is who she says she is. There is one paper that says he died a few days after being discharged in Virginia and another that says he was discharged with his company and that there is no evidence of the date of his death and her request for a pension was denied. There are about 16 or so pages with this, some are very hard to read. What a great Christmas Present. Mary

Barb, I don't know if this will help you or not, but I do have some McAdams and some Brownings in my extended family tree...Anna Browning was the first wife of a many great Uncle, Thomas Bird, who was a brother of my many gr grandfather, James Bird, also a many great step grandfather, from his second wife, Nancy Hamilton Bradford. Anyway, Anna Browning, born in 1761, Orange; died 1825, Orange. Her parents were John browning, B 1728, died Nov 18, 1803, Georgia, and his wife, Elizabeth Demarest, B 1728. They had the following children: Francis A. Browning, B Nov 24, 1753; John Radford Browning, B May 17, 1757; Joshua Browning B Jan 29, 1758; Anna 1761; Phoebe, Sept 19, 1762; Clara, March 1, 1765, Senah B about 1766, WILLIAM, B 1768; Millicent B 1775. I do not have anything on Anna's siblings except their birthdates. I would suggest that you track down the males here...perhaps your Thomas Franklin was one of their sons or grandsons. Now as to McAdams...my 3gr aunt, Margaret Bradford, married an Eli McAdams. She was born to David Bradford and Elizabeth Carrigan in Orange Co. Eli, born Aug 9, 1817, was the son of David McAdams and Margaret "Peggy" Morrow. They had at least two other children, Caatharine and David. There were possibly more children... His parents were Hugh McAdams and Catrine Scott. Hugh was born in Orange Co in 1737. He was the son of Samuel McAdams, I believe. I would check whether David and Margaret McAdams had more children....they were the same age basically as your Frances. I've got some Pettigrews also...I'll have to go check those in my file and get back to you. Hi Everybody: I thought I'd start the New Year by reminding everyone that I'm researching the ALLRED family. Four Allred men settled in old Orange County in the 1750's. Their land was located near today's Cedar Falls and Franklinville area in Randolph County. By the 1790's, some of their family members began showing up in Alamance, Chatham, and Guilford counties. I have quite a bit of information on this family that I'm always willing to share. I'm always interested in making new contacts and collecting new info. I also contribute to three Allred web sites that you may find interesting: www.allredfamily.org www.allredroster.com www.eddieallred.com And we have a family newsletter that is published quarterly. If you'd like a complimentary copy of our newsletter, just let me know (and send your regular mail address). No obligation! Linda Allred Cooper lacooper@mindspring.com

Hi All, I copied this while looking for Obituaries at the Library. Maybe this will add some 'color' to someone's family history. Mary Ellis High Point Enterprise, Sunday, July 20, 1924 Whitsett News Whitsett, July 19 --- Mr. and Mrs. Gaston D. Cobb of Tulsa, Okla., are here for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. W.H. McLean. Mr. Cobb is a brother of Mrs. McLean and has for some years made his home in Oklahoma where he has been successful in various business enterprises. Mr. and Mrs. Junius Clapp from Florence, S.C. are here for a few days with relatives. Mrs. G.W. Kernodle of Washington, D.C., arrived last week to spend some time with friends in the community. She is well remembered as Miss Kate Cobb, formerly of Elon college before her marriage to Dr. G. W. Kernodle. Dr. W.T. Whitsett reached home today from a visit to Orange county. On Sunday he delivered the memorial address at the home coming day of Chestnut Ridge Methodist church located between Mebane and Chapel Hill, one of the largest churches in that section. While away he visited the scene of the wind storm of last Thursday which destroyed the former home of the late J. Frank Thompson near Chestnut Ridge school. A very large tree was blown down across the residence almost completely destroying the house but fortunately killing none of the occupants. Next Sunday, July 20th, the protracted services at Springwood Presbyterian church will begin to continue for some days. The Christian Endeavor society of Bethel church near McLeansville has extended an invitation to the Whitsett Endeavor society to hold a joint meeting at Bethel at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, the 20th. The Whitsett society will send a special speaker for the meeting, and also furnish some special musical selections for the occasion. A number of the boys and girls, members of the county clubs, will go this year to the annual outing of the clubs to be held as usual on the Rockingham play grounds near Wentworth in Rockingham county. Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Davenport of Kenly, N.C., are expected the latter part of the week to attend the Guilford county Sunday school convention at Guilford college the 24th and 25th. Mrs. R. O. Walker plans to go to Raleigh Wednesday for a special meeting, and thence to Norfolk for a short stay with relatives. Miss Isla Willis Thompson, who has been in Richmond, Va., for the last week attending the southern convention of the Christian Endeavor societies reached home today. She reports a great convention, and a delightful time. Miss Gladys Holt and several friends from Burlington were pleasant visitors Sunday afternoon. The heavy rains of the past few days have greatly hindered the farmers in gathering in the wheat crop, much of which is till standing in the fields. It is feared that there has been serious damage to the crop. Mrs. G.W. Davenport is planning to visit her sister in Montreat sometime soon. Rev. G.C. Irvin, who is junior pastor of West Market Street church, has been secured to assist in the meeting that begins at the Methodist church on Sunday evening, July 27th. He preached here some years ago, and is very popular with everybody. Dr. and Mrs. Fred C. Mendenhall of Winston-Salem, were visitors the first of the week. Mrs. Mendenhall will remain for a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Ed. B. Wheeler.
Hi List, Here's a bit of trivia for everyone concerning mourning rituals. Enjoy. In ancient times, it was believed that the spirits of the dead could repossess the body of the living. So, to disguise themselves from evil spirits, mourners painted their bodies black. Later societies translated this custom into wearing black clothes and veils. HI: I'm stymied in my research into NATHANIEL LONG (WE've found his father) and his wife LUCRETIA EVANS (FATHER IS ROBERT EVANS, MOTHER UNKNOWN) of Alamance Co., NC. Nathaniel Long, an African-American, married Lucretia, said to be Cherokee, in 1874. Their son EDWARD NATHANIEL, nicknamed PINK, had fought with a white man, so Nathaniel sent him to Ohio to get him away from trouble. The family followed later with Nathaniel, Lucretia and their children CORA, ROSA, ALEXANDER, DAVID, ROBERT, MARY JULIA and SADIE to Clark County, Ohio. Family legend says they stopped in Clifton Forge, VA, for several months before getting to Ohio but I can't find them in the census. Son Alexander married MINNIE VIOLA WALKER, whose parents, ISSAC WALKER and SARAH ENOCH, were also from Alamance Co. Sarah's parents, BEDFORD and TENNER ENOCH, were from Alamance Co. Sarah moved to Ohio and Tenner later moved there to live with her daughter. Both are buried in Clark County, Ohio. I need to move to the next step with these families. What is the origin of their surnames? Any hints on researching African-Americans and Cherokees in Alamance County? All help appreciated!
