    1. [NCALAMAN] Jesse Allred 1783-1844
    2. Linda Cooper
    3. Hi: It's me again. Still researching my brick wall: my GGGGrandfather Jesse Allred 1783-1844 who was illegitimate. After 6 years of searching, I still don't have a clue about who his parents were. What has been documented about him is: He bought his first tract of land in 1808. This land was located in north east Randolph County along today's Randolph Church Road. Some family members still live on this original land. Jesse's house was located about 300 yards from the Peter Freeman house. It was very unusual for two houses to be located so close to each other in the early 1800's. I have found no family relationship between the Freemans and Jesse so far although I have been told that several of Jesse's children were actually born in the Freeman house and one of Jesse's grandchildren is listed as living with the Freemans on a census record. He married Alsey York (1790-1870's) and they had 11 children. Alsey was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church until she was "kicked out for not attending a foot washing ceremony" in the 1830's. He is buried at Shiloh United Methodist Church. The grave next to his is marked only by a large rock, so there is no way of knowing if Alsey is buried with him. I have not found her grave anywhere else, so she is probably buried with him, but no way to document this. Jesse told his children and grandchildren that he "didn't have any parents" and that he was "found out in the woods on a tree stump". The term "Woods Baby" is collocial and was used frequently to describe illegitimate children prior to the 1940's. I've looked high and low and can't figure out who his parents might have been. Currently I am slowly and methodically reseaching every member of the Allred family living in Randolph County (male and female) who was "of child bearing years" in 1783. I'm hoping that through a process of elimination, I will be able to narrow down the possible suspects and eventually figure out who his mother or father might have been. Course, bottom line is that I can't prove Jesse was born in Randolph County - I'm just assuming he was since he lived there and there were so many Allreds there during that time period. But, I have to keep my mind open to the fact that he may not have been born there. If you have any information that will help - Please Contact Me!! Thanks Linda Allred Cooper lacooper@mindspring.com

Posted on: Alamance County, NC Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Alamance?read=566 Surname: ------------------------- I am researching my great great grandfather, Oston 'Also' BURNETT, and his family which originated in the section of Alamance County that was once the southern district of Orange County before 1849. His parents were Aaron BURNETT and Abigail WILLIAMS. Abigail was also married to an Edward BOWMAN and had a daughter, Margaret. I have a marriage bond between Alcey BURNETT and Nancy BURNETT on 26 January 1825 in Orange County. The witness is Michael HOLT and the bondsman is Samuel JEFFRIES. Also and his family migrated to Indiana in possibly 1839-1840. They are listed as "people of color", which means they may have been African American, Indian or both. The 1850 Census for Alamance County lists the majority of Burnett's as "mulatto". Any evidence linking Also BURNETT and his family to the Alamance area of "Old Orange County" would be appreciated.

Death records list parents as Isaac HOLT and Mary GAPPENS. She was first married to a GAPPENS, per her daughters dc, and then to a John William LONG, SR. Census records show a Harriet of the right age in the household of Mary GAPPENS but no Isaac HOLT. Is it possible that Isaac died and Mary remarried? According to my grandmother's dc, Sallie Lillian GAPPENS b. 15 Feb. 1881, Burlington, Alamance, NC. Parents were W.H. GAPPENS and Harriet Isabelle HOLT. Any help would be appreciated.

    2. Sue
    3. Hello list(s) I have just added a new section to the Chatham Co., page. I've extracted all the free blacks in the first half of the 1850 census and listed them separately, and the families they were enumerated with. It makes it much easier to find them and see the relationships. Hope this will help some one who is searching for their ancestors of black or mixed heritage. I am asking for anyone who has old bible records that have the slaves listed in the bible, to please contact me with the information. I have quite a few names in an old bible that I have access to and plan on extracting that. I would like to have any other that you would be willing to send me.. Thanks, Sue Ashby http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm

    1. [NCALAMAN] CURTIS / KING
    2. Good Evening, I need help Please. Below is all that I have on my CURTIS line. Warren H CURTIS and Martha (KING) CURTIS was in Burlington, North Caroline in the year of 1859, where their son Samuel G. CURTIS was born. I cannot find them on any census index. Their son Samuel CURTIS was married at least twice. Samuel died in Roanoke, Virginia in 1942. At some point in his life (Samuel G CURTIS) was a ship joiner, where is unknown We have no information on his first wife "Annie". His second wife Rosa Bell (ST.CLAIR) CURTIS we believe born somewhere in the Roanoke Valley area of Virginia ( Bedford County, Virginia). Rosa parents were Richard and Mary (TATE) ST.CLAIR. At some period in Samuel and his second wife life they own a Chicken Farm in Berlin, Maryland. Please if anyone looks familiar give me a yell. I feel that Warren and Martha (KING) CURTIS were from the Burlington County, area. I know that this family is a Mystery, but I am beginning to believe that this family was never on this planet. Can you provide me with some dates for the ones that you know for sure? You made a reference to the Civil War period, but birth dates and death dates help a lot. I am a descendant of a James King of the Union Ridge Church Community, not far from Pleasant Grove. In researching my line, I encountered several other King family groups, which I had to delve into, in order to separate those families from mine. One group descends from a Robert King, whose estate was settled in the Union Ridge area, who named my great-great uncle, James Graham, as his administrator. That line has given names like Charlie Mack and Ernest Lee King, reminiscent on your given names. I hope that we can make some connections for you. Best regards, John Fox Winston-Salem,NC
