    1. [NCALAMAN] Biography of Samuel B. Hill
    2. Lora
    3. Posted on: Alamance Co. NC Biographies Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/NC/AlamanceBios/2 Surname: Branson, Newlin, Long ------------------------- History of Rush County Indiana 188 Brant & Fuller Chicago Samuel B. Hill, a prominent citizen of Carthage, and the Cashier of the Bank of Carthage, is a native of Randolph County, North Carolina, born February 2, 1829, he is the son of Samuel and Mary (Branson) Hill, who were also natives of Randolph County, North Carolina, both of English descent. He was reared to manhood upon a farm in his native county, and at twenty-three years of age, or December 31, 1851, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy H. Newlin, who is a native of Alamance County, North Carolina, born February 18, 1831, being the daughter of John and Rebecca (LONG) Newlin, both of whom were natives of Alamance County, North Carolina, of English descent. Her parents both spent their entire lives in their native county. The father died in June 1867, at the advanced age of ninety-two, and his wife survived him about two years. At twenty-one years of age, our subject became employed in a cotton mill, and two years later he turned his attention to merchandising and farming, and from 1851 to 1860 he conducted a general store and superintended a farm in Randolph County. In October 1860, he moved his family to Rush County, and he has ever since been a resident of Carthage. During the first eighteen years of his residence there he was engaged in mercantile pursuits. On the 10th day of April 1875, he organized the Bank of Carthage, of which he has been Cashier, and a leading stockholder ever since. In connection with the above, he has during the all this time controlled extensive farming interests in the vicinity of Carthage. He is the owner of 575 acres of first class land lying in Rush and Shelby counties, all of which is under fence and a good part of which is in an excellent state of cultivation. This gives him a rank not only as one of its most extensive freeholders and farmers. In consequence of his diversified business interests and his close attention to them, he is now the victim of an impaired health but a period of recent recreation and travel bids fair to cause its restoration. He and wife have had seven children as follows: Eunice A., Emily R., Edgar N., Walter B., and Bertha L., who are living, and two sons that died in infancy, unnamed. Mr. Hill and family are members of the FriendsÂ’ Church. In politics, our subject is a Republican. His portrait is presented with this volume.

    3. Posted on: Alamance County, NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Alamance/688 Surname: CLENDINEN, WEST ------------------------- Alex, Do you possess any information regarding an Angeline Clendinen who married William West in the Orange County, North Carolina area. William West was born in 1752 in either Virginia or North Carolina and participated in the battle of Lindley's Mill. This battle, if I recall correctly, probably occurred in present-day Alamance County, North Carolina. In using William West's birth date as a reference point, it is conceivable that Angeline was born sometime between 1752 and 1756. William West and Angeline Clendinen were married about 1771 in the Orange/Chatham County, North Carolina area, and they became the parents of the following proven children: James West, Elsie A. West, John M. West, and Anne West. Benjamin M. West bmwest@usit.net

    3. The 1850 census of Alamance County, North District, lists a Sarah HUGHES age 22 and Piety Adams age 20. (census page 52) Next door to them is Jeremiah HUGHES age 28, Hariet HUGHES age 38, and two children, James and Cornelia. Does anyone know who these people are? A few pages further in the census is Doctin DICKEY, his wife Eliza (maiden name HUGHES), two of their children, and a Thomas HUGHES age 18. Is there a connection between Eliza HUGHES DICKEY (and what is probably a brother Thomas HUGHES) and the other HUGHES's a few pages back? My g-g-g-grandfather George Washington HUGHES married Sarah PASCAL September 1840 in Orange County, what is now Alamance. I have no idea who his parents are and have been searching for years. The bondsman for their marriage bond dated October 1839 were Samuel ADAMS and Lewis B. HOLT. Hence I was wondering about the possible HUGHES/ADAMS connection. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank..... John Hughes hughes5@hdo.net www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/3374

    1. [NCALAMAN] Extraction of slave names from documents.
    2. sue
    3. Hello all, I've just finished extracting and posting names of slaves and their owners from estate records and a bible in Chatham Co. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/slaves.htm These records have been extremely difficult, for me, as a descendant of slave owners, to do. But, I felt that they needed to be available to any of African-American ancestry. Also, those of you that had ancestors who were slave owners may find that, this will be the only record, your folks are in. There are names of people from other counties and states. In some cases relationships are given in the sales. Use your 'find in page' feature in your browser to look for these folks. Hope it helps someone. Sue

    1. [NCALAMAN] CHEEK Tombstone
    2. sue
    3. Hello List. There was a tombstone uncovered last week by loggers, N. of 15-501, in Chatham Co. Linda Allred Cooper took a picture and sent it to me. I've placed in on the Chatham Co. page. All CHEEK descendants might want to take a look and see if this is one of your ancestors. It may even be a family cemetery that only has this one stone left? Please let us know if you know, whose property and family this belongs to. I know I would be so happy if it were one of mine, that was found. Thanks Sue Ashby, CC for Chatham Co. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm The URL for the photo is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/marker2.jpg
