This is the line I am interested in although it is not my direct line. I had made the assumption that the Stephen that Hugh Pugh Sr sold all that land to was his son and the nieces and nephew that Council Wooten gave negroes etc to were the children of that Stephen. Dates just don't work unless he was a REAL old man having children. At this point, am more inclined to think those children were of Stephen the son of Hugh Pugh JR. and maybe Hugh Sr was selling that land to his GRANDSON not his son. The Pugh Bible gives the death date of Hugh's son Stephen. THere was only one Stephen on the 1790 Census - census take missed him on the 1830 unless he had moved. Census taker appears to have missed almost all these Pughs and didn't get the people in the household right to boot. Problem I have is these Pugh children were not even of age when they were given gifts. p 105 - 14 Aug 1805 - Stephen Pugh (or) Hugh Pugh, son (ee) mentions Mary, mother of Hugh - wit William Pugh If the above was Stephen son of Hugh JR, Hugh was a baby. BOOK AA 1. p 104 - 31 Jan 1811 - Council Wooten (or) Rachel, Hollon, Hughey Pugh, Lewis Bryan Mumford (ee) - 4 feather beds and furniture (NOTE: Holland may have married a Broom - she born ca 1798 In 1790 Stephen had no children in his household (but Hugh Jr only had one and none of his other sons were on the census), in 1800 Stephen had no sons in his houshold, three daughters between 0-10. In 1810 there was one young son (all this assuming the children were his). In 1805 Stephen had a son Hugh, in 1811 a Rachel was of age - assumed to be the daughter of Stephen - In 1814 there was a son Stephen All this seems to be pushing it on age. How do you know that Lewis Bryan Mumford's mother was Sarah? Ima Mewborn thought that Council Wooten was the father in law of Mary wife of Stephen. If that was the case, there must have been more than one Council Wooten in Pitt Co. Council Wooten that married Mary Burney didn't have a daughter Mary and his children were not old enough anyway. Mary Burney would have been the niece of Stephen Pugh if he was the son of Hugh Jr. I am just confused on all of this. Was there one William in the 3rd generation or 2 - records only support one, the son of Hugh Jr. Martha Some of what I have is from Linda Harris, but I have looked at a lot >of Census info and done some internet research.
