I live in the Elmira, NY area................very close to the National Civil War Cemetry. It did not dawn on me until I came across one of my ancestors who had been captured during the War, sent to the notorious POW camp in Elmira, NY, died and was buried there. I visited the site. The caretakers are quite helpful, all information is readily available. Besides having the names on the headstones, each one is numbered so a particular one is easy to find. A meticulous list was kept, by a John Jones, of all the prisoners. Now, the city is in the process of making his home into a museum, and putting up markers in the area to show just where the prison camp was located. I found one of my ancestors in the cemetary. If you think there would be anyone interested, I`d be glad to look, for others, who have ancestors unfortunate enough to have died in the Elmira prison camp.
