    3. Thought I had the case but don't see it. Do have a copy of Sidney Phillips Coward's Will. She was the daughter of Thomas Phillips - mother not known - and married to Cullen Coward. She was sister to my William Phillips. Martha Will of Sidney Phillips Coward In the name of God amen I Sidney Coward of the County of Greene and State of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory blessed be almighty God for the same and knowing that it is ordained for all mankind to depart this life, do make ordain and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say first I give my Soul to God who gave it and that my Executor herein after named shall have provided for my body a decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relations and friends and pay all funeral expenses together with all my just debts howsoever and to whomsoever owing out of the monies that may first come unto his hands as a part or parcel of my estate. Item 1st I leave unto my daughter Pearcy Potter the following Negroes and their increase from this date namely Hulda, Martha and Siles ?? during her life and then I give the same to the lawful heirs or children of the said Pearcy to be equally divided among the same and to them and their heirs absolutely forever Item 2 I give and bequeath unto my GrandDaughter Mary Henry little Jim ?? about eight years old to her and her heirs forever Item 3 I Give and bequeath to my GrandDaughter Malvina Henry negro boy Peter, girl Sratitta and her increase to her and her heirs forever Item 4th I leave unto my GrandDaughter Lumisa Hart during her natural life a negro girl Catherine and increase and at her death I give the same to the children of the said Lumisa to be (sic) heirs absolute forever Item 5th I leave unto my GrandDughter Jane Dunn during her life Negro girl Sarah and her increase and then I give the same to the children of the said Jane to be heirs absolutely forever Item 6th I leave unto Elizabeth Spivey wife of Ephraim Spivey during her natural life negro boy John and girl Ginny and Rachel and their increase and then I give the same to the children of the said Elizabeth to them and their heirs forever Item 7th I give and bequeath unto my GrandDaughter Caroline Edwards wife of Carson Edwards Negro boy Bob to her and her heirs forever NOTE: She married Isaac C. Edwards Item 8th I give and bequeath to my GrandSon John Joiner Negro boy Warren to him and his heirs forever Item 9th I give and bequeath unto my GrandDaughter Luvenia Joiner Negro boy Hurel ?? to her and her heirs forever Item 10th I give and bequeath to my Granddaughter Sidney Ormon Negro girl Chery and her increase to her and her heirs forever Item 11th I give and bequeath unto my GrandDaughter Susan Ormond Negro woman Froy ?? & child Charity and increase to her and her heirs forever Item 12th I give and bequeath to my GrandSon Thomas Ormond Negro man York to him and his heirs forever Item 13th I leave Negro man Jim to be hired out and the proceeds thereof to be applied to the maintainance of old negro woman Rose as long as she lives and then after the death of said old Negro Woman Rose my will and desire is that said Negro man Jim should be sold and the proceeds thereof be equally divided amongst all of my lawful heirs after paying expenses of setting my estate Item 14th I give and bequeath unto Sidney Hart daughter of Lumisa Hart one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever Item 15th I leave a small piece of land about fifteen acres more or less to be sold together with all the balance of my property not heretofore given away on a credit of six months and after paying all my debts and expenses of setting my estate the balance thereof together with all other property that may form a part of parcel of my estate to be equally divided amongst all my lawful heirs including Mary Henry and Malvina Henry and for them to share in proportion to the rest of my GrandChildren. And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint Edward Carmon my lawful executor to all intents and purposes to execute this my last will and testament according to the intent and meaning of the same, and every part and clause thereof hereby revoking and declaring utterly void all other wills, and testaments by me heretofore made In witness whereof I the said Sidney Coward to hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of August 1854 All erasures and interhineations (sic) were made before assignment of this will Sidney Coward Signed Sealed published declared by the said Sidney Coward to be her last will and testament in the presence of us who at her request stand in her presence do subscribe our names as witnesses thereto Franklin Thomas Gatlin Phillips State of North Carolina Greene County January 1st 1868 I certify that the foregoing is a true copy of Sidney Cowards will now on file in my office John M. Patrick Clerk of S Court NOTE: This is a copy of the original and has no probated date but Sidney died between 1854 and the 1860 Census. According to Lenore Phillips Smith some of the legatees were dead at the time of settlement.
