Bill Kittrell, Cemetery Sleuth To Receive NC State Genealogical Society Award Bill Kittrell has visited every known gravesite in Pitt County and recorded some 820+ cemeteries. His remarkable odyssey through the resting place of past generations and the publication of his work, "The Pitt County Cemetery Book, Vols 1 & 2" by the Pitt County Historical Society in 2007 has garnered him an award. The North Carolina Genealogical Society has chosen the cemetery book for “The Excellence in Publishing” Award, for a book of secondary source material, or family history relevant to North Carolina. Bill will be presented the award at the Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Genealogical Society which begins at 10:30 AM during their Fall Workshop in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, November 15, 2008. What Bill Kittrell has done is one of the most significant achievements in the history of the Pitt County. Genealogists and historians will be talking about and using his cemetery books a century from now. Bill has left indelible footprints through the paths of Pitt County history that will be here a century from now. He founded the Pitt County Family Researchers in 1994, which has published the award winning Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly since its inception. So much has been preserved for future generations of genealogists. Please congratulate Bill on getting the attention he well deserves. Also thank his wife, Mary Kittrell for helping him and supporting him with his crazy idea of fun; going through briars, ticks, snakes, poison ivy etc. to look for grave stones. Many thanks also go to the Pitt County Historical Society for acknowledging the importance of Bill’s work and working to get it published. _________________________________________________________________ Stay organized with simple drag and drop from Windows Live Hotmail. http://windowslive.com/Explore/hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_hotmail_102008
Congratulations Bill Kittrell. I bought your cemetery books and found my AA gg grandparents Simon and Sylvia Sheppard listed in there. I was so happy and surprised to see that they had headstones. I plan on going to see their graves, the next time I am in North Carolina. Thank you so very much. Eva Coward Thompson Dallas Tx --- On Sun, 11/2/08, Roger E. Congratulations to Bill for a job extremely well done and also to Mary who did all his driving. This work is invaluable to everyone doing research in Pitt Co not only today but in the future. This was indeed a labor of love. Naturally, some of us have suggested Greene Co would be great for his next project but Mary took exception to that idea. As we can see from the messages, Bill and Mary are nationally known for their wonderful works. Their books are located throughout the country. We here in Pitt County are fortunate enough to have them for "neighbors". Many thanks for helping all of us find our family ties. Congratulations to you both!
