That's dead on, Bill. That Thomas Baker lived in Pitt for a while. I have read different reports that said he lost his money. Also, the Richard Baker in Pitt early died young, but had some children who were raised by another Baker, William Baker, I think, according to Bill Murphey's notes. There was a William Baker in Wayne Co very early. I think all these Bakers were related. ANd, I think the Thomas Baker in Pitt may have been married to Sarah (Bryan?) Wood. And, this same Thomas Baker may have been in Bertie for a time. I get a lot of good information from www.sallysfamilyplace.com If you've never checked it, it has tons of wills, just all kinds of documentation. There is also a Blake Baker from Bertie. He is the one who moved to Kentucky. I think we are related to him. My father's DNA matched a Baker man whose ancestors were from NC, KY, and MS. We think he's out of the Blake Baker from Bertie, or his line, but I can't prove it yet. We have learned a great deal. Henry Baker's descendants were stationed all over eastern NC to oversee the land holdings. My Bakers were probably related to Simmons Jones Baker from Halifax, for example. Simmons Jones even moved back and forth from Florida to North Carolina. Our Bakers appear to be English and from Nansemond Co VA. My direct line of James and William Bakers married into the Hobbs and Tyson families of Greene Co NC. My cousin Betty's line married into the Grizzard family of Greene Co NC and Pitt. My cousin Cliff we're not sure of yet. His William Baker, a different line, married a Fereby________. They lived in Greene Co NC in 1850 and moved to Wayne CO in 1860. No William Baker after 1860. Fereby lived at least until the 1880 census in Wayne County. Their son was named R. Haywood Baker and he married a Josephine Seymour. (She was NOT the Josephine Baker who was badly burned in a fire.) Joe Hendrix, whose grandfather was really a Baker, not a Hendrix, is a direct descendant of Blake Baker from Gates and Joe is a close match in DNA to my father. Joe's Bakers moved from Gates to Charlton Co Georgia. Clarence Baker matched us with DNA and using only census information, we traced his ancestors back to a Robert Baker in the 1850 Greene Co NC census. Wiley Franklin Baker married a Bettie Taylor and Wiley's parents were Robert Baker and Eliza (Jones???) Burress. I'm doing this from memory because I'm at work. We found Clarence on his looks alone. Someone said he looked like cousin Cliff so we paid to have his DNA tested and sure enough.... We have matched a couple more Bakers, one from Arkansas, and we have NO CLUE how we are related. But somehow the ones from Arkansas seem to be living in the vicinity of the ones from Mississippi at times. Then they go back to Arkansas. And they share some given family names. Bill, I hope this all gives you a good laugh. And by the way, when I was working on the Bakers from Mississippi, I kept running into Kittrells. Paula Baker Researching Cole, Wilkerson, Norman, and White in Georgia, South Carolina, and Louisiana and Baker, Tyson, Manning, and Stocks in North Carolina "We are not free, separate, and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way."
