White Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly Aug. 2008 Joyner vs. Denny, Supreme Court, 1853 The following is an abstract of NC Supreme Court Case # 6285, Isaac Joyner vs. Mary Denny, Drury Vincent and Willie Williams, Admr. of Mary, late wife of Drury Vincent. Pitt County.Contributed by Roger Kammerer. zzzzz On Aug. 6, 1829, Mary DENNY, Sr., owned a slave girl named Nancy, age 8. She intended to marry Drury VINCENT on that date and unbeknown to Drury VINCENT, Mary Denny, Sr. made a deed on that date for the slave Nancy and about 25 acres of land in Greene County to her neice, Mary DENNY, Jr., daughter of Elizabeth DENNY. At their marriage, Drury took Mary DENNY’S slaves into his possession. On Dec. 5, 1843, Drury VINCENT sold the slave Nancy to Isaac JOYNER. Mrs. Mary Denny VINCENT died in January 1849, intestate. It was discovered that Mrs. Mary Denny VINCENT had made the deed to her neice. Drury VINCENT claimed the slave and in September, 1849, Samuel BELL agent for Mary DENNY Jr. claimed the slave. The case went to the Supreme Court over ownership of the slave. After the marriage of Drury VINCENT and Mary DENNY, the younger Mary DENNY lived with them. The slave Nancy had 2 children: Ben and Louisa ......and was said to of had a 3rd child Bill of Sale of Slave Nancy to Isaac Joyner [MM, p. 303] 1843 Deposition of James JOYNER, Nov. 23, 1843 JOYNER knew Drury VINCENT of Pitt County for several years and believe him to be near 70 years old and an infirm old man. Deposition of Drury VINCENT, April 6, 1850 Drury VINCENT dated Mary DENNY four or five months and married three or four days after being engaged. He married on Aug. 6, 1829 to Mary DENNY. He was married by Joseph BROWN Esq. in presence of : Spires DENNY and wife, Norfleet VINSON, Thomas HOOKER and wife, Frederick NICHOLS, Betsy DENNY. Mary VINCENT died last January at the house where I lived belonging to James T. WILLIAMS near his mill. She also miscarried once at the same place, she never had a child to live. After wife’s death, Drury lived in his own house on Beaver DAM, Pitt County. Drury never lived in Greene County and lived 15 miles from the Court House in Greene County. After wife’s death, VINCENT sold the slaves Ben and Louisa to James T. WILLIAMS for $400, and they have been in his possession ever since. Drury keeps the mill of James T. WILLIAMS. Deposition of Joseph BROWN BROWN resided in Greene County as a farmer aged between 40-50 years of age. He was a Justice of the Peace in 1829 and married Drury VINCENT and Mary DENNY at Mary DENNY’S house. They celebrated the wedding on a Thursday night and the llicense was taken out on the ensuing Saturday. Those present were Thomas HOOKER, his wife was not, the wife of Norfleet VINSON, the sisters of Mary DENNY were also there. Drury VINCENT arrived late in the evening on the night of the marriage and went with me when I left. Deposition of Catherine, wife of Norfleet VINSON She resides near Hookerton, Greene County and was at Drury VINCENTS wedding. Catherine was then the wife of Spires DENNY, brother of Mary DENNY the bride. Catherine lived not 200 to 300 yards from Mary DENNY before she married. Drury VINCENT lived in Pitt County, 15 miles from Mary DENNY. Drury was reputed to be a man of small means, but a good liver. Deposition of Thomas LETCHWORTH, Greene Co., NC, Aug. 17, 1850 Thomas now at least 45, has lived in Greene County from the time he became a housekeeper, except four years. Mary DENNY lived in Johnston County, NC in 1851.
