Mr. Langley, For help in preserving your 300 year old family bible, call or email Dr. Jonathan Dembo, Head of Special Collections, Joyner Library at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. phone number: 252-328-2661. email: demboj@mail.ecu.edu or Elizabeth H. Smith, Head Preservation and Conservation Professor, Joyner Library at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. phone: 252-328-0297 email: smithe@mail.ecu.edu They will help you to make an appointment to bring the bible in for an evaluation. Place the bible in a box such as a banker's file box or some other container which will protect it. The best thing to do is to carry it yourself. Do not ship it. At ECU they can advise you on how to have the pages repaired. They may even be able to repair it for you. They understand about the preservation of old documents. They can advise you on how to store, protect and preserve this bible. They will be able to make copies of the records pages without damaging the bible. While they will not want to keep the original bible in the collection, they will make copies of the family records to have on file in the Special Collection. This is the best place for these records to be preserved for the benefit of all. If the pages are crumbling, as you say, it will not be long before the information is completely lost. That is why it is important for you to go ahead and make an appointment now in order to preserve these records as soon as possible.
