This is subject I know almost nothing about but think Ruth does. Ran across several books the other day in the Tenn section at the DAR by Dr. Frank Pruitt who has done a lot of books on NC land records. Seems he has done a fair amount in Tenn also especially the early land which originated in NC. There are two books entitled "Glasgow Land Fraud Papers 1783 - 1800" and about 6 books on "Tennessee Land Entires". The same people involved in the Warrenton Land Fraud were involved in the Glasgow Land Fraud. Pruitt gives the background on the Tenn Land Fraud and then following the records at the NC Archives, goes into the many soldiers who were either cheated or whose name was used. It also goes into the many court cases found in the New Bern District Court Records and the Supreme Court Cases in NC. Unfortunately the records do not indicate where the person was from so it is hard to know if John Phillips was from Lenoir Co or some county in the western part of the state. There are cases a county is given and there are cases where the entry was legal where one assumes a heir took it up. At least it gives a person with the same surname as the present assignee. An example Willis Pipkin - 640 acres dec assigned by Zach Pipkin to J. G. Blount - Willis Pipkin was found to still be alive in Wayne Co - forged by John McNees. From doing just a little reading I assume that someone took out an entry in the name of Willis Pipkin, claimed him to be dead, and Zach Pipkin (Guy was he a son?) assigned the entry to J. G. Blount. John McNees must have forged all these names or was in business with Blount. McNees was from present day Greene Co and there were intermarriages with the Parrotts and they all left the area and went to Darlington Co. McNees was one of Glasgow's right hand men in this fraud, along with some of the Blounts, Sheppards, Glasgow's inlaws, and others around the state. Might explain one reason why so many people left the area about this time - they were probably running for their lives. On the other books - just have not had time to really study all these books but it appears some of these entries are redundant and some aren't. Again, you have to know who you are looking for. Many people in NC left and went to Tenn to take up their land but many didn't. It would take weeks to study these books - took me an hour just to figure out how to use the index. Pruitt has done us all a BIG favor as these books are a potential gold mine of information. The names are from all over the state. Sorry, I don't have time to do individual look-ups - a quick check did not even turn up any of my own families that I could prove. Try inter library loan. Martha
