    3. Tracy, I had a cousin in Pitt County named John Stancil William Brown. He was related to me through his mother, Viola Harris Brown wife of Peter Brown, his father. None of these three are living, but J. S. W. Brown had several brothers and sisters who are still alive and well. They are not into genealogy (yet), but I will print your inquiry and take to them to see if they know anything about your folks. Jo ROBERSON Prytherch

    3. Jo, Thanks for taking time to read my message and to send your reply. If your cousins are not into genealogy they probably will not have any information, but if you do come across any clues I would love to hear from you. Incidently, who were the parents of JSW Brown? One of Benjamin Brown's granddaughters mentioned in the will, Martha Stancil, herself married another Brown, John R. Brown I believe it was. John R. and Martha Stancil Brown were on the 1850 Pitt County census. 3. Tracy, I have a John Reddin Brown married to Martha "Patsy" Stancil with daughter Clary Brown who married Jesse Nelson, son of Nimrod Nelson. I have suspected Benjamin Brown as being the father of John R. Brown, but have not had time to research this family. Pitt County Chronicles (page 197, Item # 380) gives the names of John R Brown and Patsy's children and follows JSW Brown and Elizabeth Rebecca Fleming family. You may already have this information. Sounds like you are further along with your research than I on this line. 3. Apparently, there are two JSW Browns. The John Stancil William Brown 1927-1994, who was son of Peter 1875-1961 and Viola Harris Brown 1905-1988, married Dorothy Jean Edwards 1929-1994. They had five children, all of whom are still living. They are William Henry Brown, John Ivy Brown, Lois Jean Brown Barrett, Nancy Kathryn Brown Harris and David Gregory Brown. As you probably noticed, Peter Brown was 30 years older than his wife, Viola. Our JSW was brother to Johnnie Elizabeth Brown Hubband, Rose Helen Brown Saurenmen, James Ivy Brown, Albion Ray Brown, Viola Mae Brown McMillan and Dora Ann Brown Nixon. There is a Harris Family Reunion today. I have printed your first message to show to our JSW's brothers and sisters to see if they know anything about the Browns and Stancils you mentioned. Since Peter was so much older than you would expect to have middle-aged children living today, there may be a tie to the older generations you are studying. Jo

    3. Gloria, I found your message very interesting. After reading your message and looking back at some of the deeds from that time I have discovered a much closer relationship between the Browns and Stancils than I had previously been aware of. At this point I tend to agree with you that maybe Benjamin Brown was the father of John Reddin Brown. We know that the wills didn't always include all the children. There are many deeds involving the Browns but I have chosen two to talk about here: Pitt County Deed Book OO page 640 circa 1857 John Brown and wife Patsy were heirs of Eddie Brown dec'd. This is probably John Reddin and Martha Stancil Brown-we know that John S. Brown's wife was evidently dec'd by the time of the 1850 census. We know that both John Reddin Brown and Eddie Brown were born in the 1790's so it seems a likely conclusion that they were brothers, along with brother John S. Brown who was mentioned in Benjamin's will. John S. Brown born circa 1789 according to the 1850 census. Pitt County Deed Book II page 74 date December 19, 1838 Dower of Louisa Taft (wife of Arnold Taft) Louisa widow of Eddie Brown dec'd. This Louisa seems to be the daughter of Godfrey and Dorcas Jones Stancil. Previoulsy I had known that Louisa had married a Mr. Taft, but I had never identified her husband. It seems that Louisa Stancil first married Eddie Brown son of Benjamin Brown. Eddie Brown apparently died during the 1830's after which time his widow Louisa Stancil Brown became the second wife of Arnold Taft. Arnold Taft was evidently dec'd by the 1850 census when Louisa was listed with three sons the oldest of which was Godfrey Taft. To be honest with you, I don't really have much information on the Browns. My main reason for being interested in Benjamin Brown's will was that it seemed to provide the only clue as to the parents of those Stancil grandchildren listed in his will. If you ever get around to working on your Browns, there seems to be a wealth of information on them contained in the Pitt County deeds.
