Its often nearly impossible to read some headstones when the acid rain and moss and lichens have worked on 'em. Some don't like this method but in such a situation take a can of cheap shaving cream and a rubber squeegee (like for window washing). Cover the engraved part of the stone with a thick layer of the shaving cream and then wipe the stone clean with a swipe of the squeegee.
