    3. Here is an email I received from Jack Hall concerning burials at Dorothea Dix Hospital Cemetery in Raleigh, NC. Jack wronte: I found these deaths listed in the Wake County, NC. cemeteries while doing some research. They are persons buried in the Dorothea Dix Hospital cemetery in Raleigh, NC. I thought you might want to give to someone to list on the Pitt County website. Maybe it would help someone looking for their kin burials. 1. [NC-PCFR] Mary Forbes Cemetery
    2. Bill Kittrell
    3. Here is original information on this cemetery, plus notes of Bob Forbes. At the end you will note the information I found on the death certificate. MARY FORBES Cemetery, located west of Macgregor Downs Road and .2 mile south of intersection with 5th Street. Two marked graves and 40 unmarked graves. They are to be dis-interred and moved to Homestead Memorial Gardens, Greenville, NC. African American site. SOURCE: Bob Forbes Hattie and Toney Forbes, who are the subjects of Article No. 572 in Pitt County Chronicles Vol. II, might be connected to Mary and Jacob. They owned a farm in the area of PCMH where the cemetery is located. I believe their ancestors may have been slaves of my ancestors, but won their freedom prior to the Civil War. There are some tales in my family of favored slaves being given land and freedom prior to the Civil War. The Streeter family is another well-known African American family with a long history of land ownership in the same general area (their farm was on MacGregor Downs Road), which was related to this Forbes family. The author of Article No. 572 in PCC Vol. 2, Binnie L. Streeter Wilkin, knows more about it. Her address is shown as 5006 Victoria Ave. Los Angeles CA 90043 in PCC Vol. 2. 2. Bob Forbes
    3. Bill -- if you're interested in more info on river landings from Greenville upstream to Edgecombe County, I have a file on that... although some of it came from you. From your prior post listing landings, mills and plantations along the river downstream of Greenville, I note that my Forbes family socialized and married into the Kennedy and Lanier families mentioned there. It seems that these plantation families who owned land abutting the river were pretty close in antebellum times, which makes sense, since the river was the main transportation artery and naturally families alongside it would work and socialize together. Will share more info off-line, since I'm planning to write more seriously about the Tar River's history in a couple of years. 3. Bill -- I am pretty sure these folks are related to Hattie and Toney Forbes, who are the subjects of Article No. 572 in Pitt County Chronicles Vol. II. They owned a farm in the area of PCMH where the cemetery you refer to below is located. I'll bet that the author of Article No. 572 in PCC Vol. 2, Binnie L. Streeter Wilkin, knows more about it. Her address is shown as 5006 Victoria Ave. Los Angeles CA 90043 in PCC Vol. 2. If you make contact w/ her, please let me know as I'd like to correspond. 3. In Wednesday's Daily Reflector there was an advertisement for a grave removal. There were only two marked graves and about 40 unmarked. This appears to be an African-American site. I went to PCFR's web site and got info on Jacob Forbes. No parents were listed for him and his death recorded in Vol 6-662. Will check certificate on next trip to courthouse to see if additional info is on it, like cemetery name and informant. This is in the area of the new dental school. I had heard of a cemetery in this area but never could find it. I was told when the property map was found it showed a grave site on the newly aquired land by the med school. 3. Is anyone researching the early Nesby Mills family of Pitt County. We are interested in finding the parents of Nesby Mills b. ca 1730. Many names have come up such as William and John as possible father. Several people through DNA have made connections to the Mills in Pitt. But cannot connect their lines. It could be through Nesby's father or possible brothers. Also I have pulled all the Mills deaths from 1914 - 1961and can share them if anyone wants listing. I am also working on the deed abstracts on the Mills. These I have listed from Ellison's Deed Abstracts along with index. I have finished Vol 1. Bill

    1. [NC-PCFR] Landings
    2. Bill Kittrell
    3. I have just started working on landings along the Tar River as well as mills and plantations near Tranters Creek. Here is some brief info on the Tranters Creek area. Researching to add more to this. This is a work in progress. PLANTATIONS ALONG TRANTERS CREEK (PITT AND BEAUFORT) WHITE HOUSE.the home of William Clark, a minister of the gospel, one of the most beautiful it is said in the area. It burned in 1903. It was located on Sheppard Mill Road a few miles west of Tranters Creek. COCKOLD'S POINT PLANTATION.Beaufort County, home of Capt. Simon Jones (b. ca 1706 d. ca 1767) CREEKMERE PLANTATION.Beaufort County, home of Allen Grist (b. ca 1792 d. ca 1866). Creekmere, on Tranters Creek about two miles from Washington, was built by Colonel John Kennedy in 1750. This home was the social center of refined hospitality. The ends of the house are of brick while the front and back are of wood. The interior was very elegant in its day and though marred by abuse and time, the living room is a fine example of the panel work and wainscoting of that period. In the bedrooms upstairs there are little corner fireplaces not larger than 12 inches wide. Allen Grist bought this place from Kennedy and lived there during the winter months and ran a large fishery. His main dwelling was on the top of the hill about a mile away, where S.M. Lee now lives. Creekmere is now owned by Mrs. Mary Hackett, a daughter of General Grimes, who purchased it after the war. ROSEDALE PLANTATION. "Rosedale Plantation was developed from several tracts of land purchased by Col. Thomas Latham (1773-1854) from Allen Grist, sheriff of Beaufort County, in 1832 and 1840." (Source: Rosedale National Register Nomination, 1980) MILL CREEK PLANTATION.Beaufort County, home of James O'Kelly Williams. Was located 2 miles east of Tranters Creek on north side of present US 264. BELLEFONT PLANTATION.Beaufort County, home of Reading Blount (b. Feb 22, 1757), son of Jacob and Barbara Gray Blount, born at Blount Hall. "Belfont Plantation House is among the most interesting eighteenth century dwellings in northeastern North Carolina, with its restrained Georgian finish well preserved throughout. Of particular significance is the impressive pair of double-shouldered exterior end chimneys joined by a two-story brick pent--a massive composition of brick laid in Flemish bond, rising from an English bond foundation. The chimney form is related to that at the Palmer-Marsh House (ca. 1744); the construction date of Belfont is unknown, but appears to be later. The property was owned after 1753 by the Lanier family. Reading Blount, who owned it after 1797, served as an officer in George Washington's main army in the American Revolution." . . . "The Palmer-Marsh House is dated 1744, but the architectural character of Belfont appears to suggest a later building date. The house was probably built by William Lanier after he purchased the property in 1753." Thank you sincerely, Ben Roberts ----- Original Message ----- From: Ben Roberts To: wbk99@earthlink.net Cc: Sue LANIER Sent: Monday, May 26, 2008 4:33 PM Subject: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncpcfr/ Mr. Kittrell, I have enjoyed looking over web site that you told me about last year, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncpcfr/. I hope it has helped me figure out my Jones ancestors from Pitt [or Edgecombe] County? My great-great-grandpa was Henry Thomas Jones. He was born 18 Jun 1819 in Pitt [or Edgecombe] County. His parents were Elizabeth & Jesse[e] Jones. Father of only Jesse Jones I have found in Edgecombe County died in 1806, too early to be pa of Henry T. In Sheppard Memorial Library, where I met you, I found book [Index & Abstracts of Deeds of Record of Pitt County, North Carolina, Volume III 1801-1817 / Judith DuPree Ellison c 1968] that records deed on 4 Aug 1802 that states James Jones, dec., father of Jessee Jones, who according to census info on site above, was born about 1784]. I hope this Jessee was pa of Henry T. especially since name is spelled same as in old Bible. In Volume IV of above set of books, 1 Jul 1825 James Jones was heir [son?] of Henry Jones or was he heir because he was son of his brother James as shown in will in http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncpcfr/pwillabst.html? In section 492B of Chronicles of Pitt County North Carolina 1982, I found Henry was son of [Capt.] Simon Jones & Abigail Bonner of Pitt County. His ancestry is here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=bonnerrh&id=I0998. James was not listed as Henry's son in this book, but they only listed 7 known children. If this James was heir to this Henry, I hope he was son & he could be listed as 1 or nephew? Grandfather of Henry Jones was Walter Jones, born circa 1670 [d.1728 Beaufort County, NC], married 2nd Dorothy Bodat [born 1700]. He was minister of Anglican Church in NC. [Capt.] Simon Jones, [born circa 1706, Beaufort County, NC], died May 1767 at "Cucold's Point", his plantation on Tranters Creek in Pitt County, NC [& borders Beaufort County, NC]. He married Abigail [Carroll Bonner], daughter of Abigail [Bryan] & [Sheriff] Thomas Bonner, of "Bonner Hill", Washington, Beaufort County, NC. After Simon died, widow married fellow merchant & planter, Aquilla Sugg of Edgecombe County & Washington, [Beaufort County,] NC & moved to Henderson County, KY, where she died. I would like to know that I am related to Bonners, if I am. Bonners are well known family in Washington, Beaufort County, NC, where I live at 305 Grimes Rd, [27889-4111]. Bonner Street is a major street in Washington, & town was founded & named by James Bonner, brother of Abigail, after his general. James Bonner married Mary Maule, who could be related to my mother. Henry Thomas Jones had 9 sons & 12 daughters by 2 wives! 2 sons were James & Walter, so these 2 had same names as Pitt County Joneses. Henry's 1st wife was Mary Ann Edwards, whose twin William Henry Edwards died in Pitt County, 28 Aug 1886. If you know of someone who may know if some of this is partially true or false, I would like to communicate with them. Sincerely, Ben Roberts
