There is an African-American cemetery located on MacGregor Downs Road that I am trying to find the names of those buried there. I am looking possibly Barnes, Barrett and Forbes. Might be other related families. There are about 40 unmarked graves. Here is what we have at this time. MARY FORBES b. ____ __, 1871 d. ____ __, 1906 JACOB FORBES b. ____ __, ____ d. May 30, 1918 Pitt County Death Certificate Vol 6-662 Jacob Forbes No Parents listed Occupation: Farming Age at death 70 years Died at home within one hour of taking sick, no doctor Informant: E. W. Spears Buried: Mays Farm Undertaker: S. G. Wilkerson JANE FORBES b. ____ __, ____ d. April 5, 1918 F: Daniel Mayo M: Unknown Pitt County Death Certificate Vol 6-514
I have been researching some cemeteries. This has to do with the Forbes and Barnes Aftrican-American families. Have pulled out all death certificates from PCFR's death certificate listings on these families. Anyone wanting a copy of these two listings please contact me privately. The Forbes list is 3 pages and the Barnes is 5 pages. All in a Word document. Bill
Message to PCGQ subscribers: Just a note to say that the August 2008 Quarterly will be late and will be mailed about the middle of September. I am still in Iowa staying with my Dad and am planning to return to NC at the end of August. Thanks, Roger Kammerer _________________________________________________________________ Got Game? I found the following in the 1995 February issue of the Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly. Since it was an early quarterly I thought I would pass this on as it gives location of where some of the Braxtons moved. Letter to Sheriff S. I. I would love to correspond with them. Myfather and mother were born and raised in Pitt. My grandfather BRAXTON's given name was JOHN and my grandmother's name was HANNAH BRAXTON. My father's name was LACY BRAXTON and one of his brothers was COUNCEL BRAXTON. Two other brothers were JOHN and CHARLES. His sister m. Luke Lohon or McLohon. My father's first wife (and my mother) was Elizabeth Parker Three children, Marion d. in infancy, Elbert died age 12 in TN. The third is myself, ELIAS BRAXTON (now age 66). I am forwarding this message from a nonmember re: Joe Anderson Brenda Stocks Hi, I am sorry to bother you, but your email was in an a Google link I tried fro the Marlboro Guards. I have come across a July 1861 letter from Joe Anderson written "in camp at New Bern". I am only guessing that this was the 27th Infantry Regiment NC Troops because most other regiments were formed after July 1861. It mentions some problems at home (Pitt County) with the Marlboro guards, It also mentions a Bob Hines at home - I think the secession debate was still raging. The letter is notable for its patriotic sentiments; very poignant considering the heroic action of the 27th at Sharpsburg (and their 63% casualty rate there). I am trying to find more on the Marlboro guards, Joe Anderson and Pitt County members of the 27th Infantry Regiment NC Troops. Any tips, references, help that you can provide to get me started would be much appreciated. Thanks very much, Walker Nolan wnolan@obblaw.com
Does anyone know of a Joe Anderson that was in the Civil War? Might be Joseph Anderson. Would he have been in th 27th Regiment? Also mentioned at this time was a Bob Hines, who was at home. I thought I had seen where an Anderson had served in the war but do not have anything in my records. Bill

Well, it seems like they need a LOT more articles and orders. Like some of you, I am struggling with the restrictions and the lack of living relatives to "submit". Greene County is too important to let this go by the wayside so I encourage you to submit articles and to order a book. Maybe you could run to the list any articles you plan to submit as to not duplicate and so they would know what might be coming in. I have a problem with information on families that I don't descend from but have enough information to submit - providing I can use a cemetery for an address. I have articles on Levi Alexander Mewborn The early Kilpatrick family The early Pope Family The early Albritton Family The early Hooker Family - the William line The early Coward family Working on the early Grimsley line which is highly questionable can do the Ormond and Darden lines which are mine if no one else is doing them Can do a number of other families which are not mine - Westbrook, Canady, Harper etc but would have to resort to a cemetery address to submit. I can't even remember what other lines I have information on but most are not mine which with the restrictions, I can't contribute. So get with it. I am adding this information that Trish brought my attention to. It is from Roger Kammerer's article of Greenville cemeteries. Certainly the next oldest cemetery was once located behind what is now the Self-Help/Proctor Hotel Building and ran between Evans and Cotanche Streets all the way to Fourth Street. In the parking lot directly behind the Self-Help/Proctor Hotel Building was an enclosed cemetery known in 1810 as the Smith Cemetery. By one account, it contained only one grave, and it was certainly connected to the then-prominent David Smith family of Greenville. By act of the N.C. General Assembly in 1828, the Smith Cemetery was broken up into three sections, the two unused portions being sold off. The other part of the public cemetery in the central portion of Greenville, which ran to Fourth Street, is mentioned several times in the local newspaper in the 1880s. In 1885 only two tombstones still existed and one other grave was covered with a large slab. The newspaper complained how the cemetery was covered in weeds and was a home to drunks and wandering animals. In 1887, when new stores were being built on Evans Street, the City fathers ordered the cemetery removed, but only a cursory effort was made. The two grave markers and the grave with the slab were taken to Cherry Hill Cemetery. One of the gravestones bore the inscription "Here lies the body of Josiah Wright, who died the 6th of February 1792. Native of Massachusetts." In 1896, while new buildings were again being built after a fire, workmen uncovered more graves and bones. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Trish Worthington Cobb" <turniproots@mac.com> To: <nc-pcfr@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 07, 2008 10:59 PM Subject: Re: [NC-PCFR] CEMETERY John M.
