Bill -- I'll add my congrats to Mr. Grimes' well-written note and a special thanks for inspiring me to relocate and care for the gravesites of some of my ancestors--- an event that you helped to preserve for perpetuity via photos in the back of your book. You've shown us all that it's good to learn and remember how we got here, and in the process, honor some of the souls who helped to pave the way. Many thanks for leading our efforts.. My most profound congratulations and expression of gratitude for the many years you had dedicated yourself to your project. The work you have done has and will provide valuable information that will be invaluable in strenghtening our bonds to our ancestors for many many years. I know you have enjoyed your work, but I know also that you must surely have wondered when cold, wet, tired, and wrapped in brambles if this work had any value. It most assuredly did have value and I hope you will absorb and be energized by this award and knowing how much you have meant to so many folks. I must add that Bill has put enormous energy into Genealogy and more importantly has, without any trace of selfishness, shared the bounty of his work and given of himself. I really appreciate Bill Kitterell and only wish I could have been of help to him but am just too far away. Congratulations, and God Speed. John B. Bill Kittrell, Cemetery Sleuth To Receive NC State Genealogical Society Award Bill Kittrell has visited every known gravesite in Pitt County and recorded some 820+ cemeteries. His remarkable odyssey through the resting place of past generations and the publication of his work, "The Pitt County Cemetery Book, Vols 1 & 2" by the Pitt County Historical Society in 2007 has garnered him an award. The North Carolina Genealogical Society has chosen the cemetery book for “The Excellence in Publishing” Award, for a book of secondary source material, or family history relevant to North Carolina. Bill will be presented the award at the Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Genealogical Society which begins at 10:30 AM during their Fall Workshop in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, November 15, 2008. What Bill Kittrell has done is one of the most significant achievements in the history of the Pitt County. Genealogists and historians will be talking about and using his cemetery books a century from now. Bill has left indelible footprints through the paths of Pitt County history that will be here a century from now. He founded the Pitt County Family Researchers in 1994, which has published the award winning Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly since its inception. So much has been preserved for future generations of genealogists. Please congratulate Bill on getting the attention he well deserves. Also thank his wife, Mary Kittrell for helping him and supporting him with his crazy idea of fun; going through briars, ticks, snakes, poison ivy etc. to look for grave stones. Many thanks also go to the Pitt County Historical Society for acknowledging the importance of Bill’s work and working to get it published. _________________________________________________________________ Stay organized with simple drag and drop from Windows Live Hotmail. http://windowslive.com/Explore/hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_hotmail_102008
Bill, Congratulations on your honor and recognition for an important and well done Pitt County resource. A lot of people are and will be grateful for this publication. Alice
As we can see from the messages, Bill and Mary are nationally known for their wonderful works. Their books are located throughout the country. We here in Pitt County are fortunate enough to have them for "neighbors". Many thanks for helping all of us find our family ties. Congratulations to you both! Congratulations to Bill for a job extremely well done and also to Mary who did all his driving. This work is invaluable to everyone doing research in Pitt Co not only today but in the future. This was indeed a labor of love. Naturally, some of us have suggested Greene Co would be great for his next project but Mary took exception to that idea. Congratulations Bill Kittrell. I bought your cemetery books and found my AA gg grandparents Simon and Sylvia Sheppard listed in there. I was so happy and surprised to see that they had headstones. _________________________________________________________________ Stay organized with simple drag and drop from Windows Live Hotmail. http://windowslive.com/Explore/hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_hotmail_102008 Pitt County Family Researchers website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncpcfr/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NC-PCFR-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
I stand corrected as to when Social Security began 1935 Jean I think you mean 1935 not 1835 right? Pat, The information I have for Shade F Wetherington is that he was still alive for the 1880 census with his spouse Nancy Jane Stokes. The death date I have for him is Feb 1882. Their marriage date is the date you have as his death date 28 May 1865. If you are refering to his social security information, the social security act did not become law until 14 Aug 1835.
