Benjamin Brown's 1821 Pitt County will lists the following heirs: Sons: William M., Willie, John S., Eddie Daughters: Patsy Wallace of TN, Clary Rives, Ritty Anderson, Elizabeth Brown, Grandson: Benjamin B. Brown Grandchildren: Elizabeth Stancil, Benjamin B. Stancil, John F. Stancil, Martha Stancil So it appears Benjamin Brown had a daughter who married a Stancil , parents of his above named grandchildren. What was the name of Benjamin's daughter who was the mother of Elizabeth, Benjamin B., John F., and Martha Stancil? And who was her husband, the father of these children? I know that Benjamin B. Stancil was born about 1807 or so but have never been able to identify his father. The 1810 census lists three Stancils in Pitt County: Nobles Stancil, and then Godfrey and William Stancil both on the same page. I believe there is a good possibility that Godfrey and William were brothers. Could this William be the father of Benjamin Brown's grandchildren?
I am not at home, but when I return I will look up your request in the 1870 NC Index, which I have from Quest. Sometimes it does not list people you know are there, but it is helpful sometimes. Linda Melvin
I don't think so. None of the lines I am researching from Bladen are out of that area. When you leave there they are in Virginia. Linda

Jean; Holy Cow! That is exactly where our Wilsons ended up...Gibson Co, TN. But one of them is lost in middle TN. Tell me more about your Wilsons. Ours are first found in 1720 right on the VA/NC border in a area that is now Northampton and Bertie Co. I have not gotten them across the border yet and am trying to find two missing sons of that family by following this Shade/Shadrach name. I think one may have crossed back over the border and found a likely suspect in IOW and Surry. Thanks, Jean! I'm going to save this it is so confusing when I start researching a new area to get the county history fixed in my mind. The name used by nearly all our Shadrach Wilsons on all records was their nickname, Shade. There was a Shade Wilson on the1870 census in Pitt Co (Swift Creek Township) That is late enough that someone should be able to claim him. I'm hoping there are some Wilson researchers on this list. Lisa , The Eleanor Dare Hooker and Peter Stapleford you speak of are my grandparents that moved to Bethel about 1918. It was in Bethel that their son became friends with Dan and Robert Hooker of Bethel. God Bless America!
Jane, I am unsure if this is who you are looking for. I have an Eleanor Dare Hooker b 1871 in Beaufort County married to a Peter Stapleford Cuthrell. Lisa
Our May meeting for PCFR is Tuesday night, May 21 at 7:00 pm at Sheppard Memorial Library. Eleanor Allen will be scanning photos for the Photo Archive for those of you who would like to add your family pictures to the collection. We would like to have as many Pitt County families as possible represented in this Archive. What better way to preserve our photographic history than to have them on record at the library. So many of our wonderful old photos end up deteriorating in someone's attic or being misplaced or discarded after a generation or two. Many that survive can't be identified. We've had great meetings this year with record numbers of members and visitors attending. The Daily Reflector has published several articles about the activities of PCFR, Sheppard Memorial Library, and the Pitt County Historical Society. We are finding more and more people in our community becoming interested in Pitt County history and their family history. We hope this will lead to even more sharing of resources and family information, and that this information will ultimately be published or find its way into our libraries so it is not lost at some point. We hope you enjoyed the May Quarterly. If you did not receive yours, please contact Janice at jtginnc@cox.net Brenda
In the Pitt County Chronicles there is an Annie Dare Hooker who graduated from Bethel High School in 1925. Her parents are listed as Robert Franklin and Ella Bennet Hooker She married Wadie Thurman Ward in 1933.Her son Charles Ward lives in Greenville, North Carolina. This may be the family you are searching for. The page number of PCC is 703 and the article number is 1273. Looking for any information on a Hooker family that lived in Bethel in the 1920's. May have had connections to Martin County. My uncle's (Harold Glenn Cuthrell) diaries speak of two brothers, Dan and Robert Hooker and their sister Annie Dare. The Hooker family were friends to my Cuthrell Family that lived in Bethel and Tarboro. In doing my family history I wonder if they were related to the Cuthrell Family as my grandmother Cuthrell was a Hooker before marriage. She came from Aurora before moving to Bethel. Jane Phillips God Bless America!
Thank you so much for your answer. I am fairly inexperienced in this section of NC. The name Shadrack is not all that uncommon early on, but used with the Wilson surname, it has so far, always been a branch of our Wilsons. On the 1850 census Samuel Wilson lists twins one of whom is Lewis and the other I don't remember just now, but another son is listed as William S. Wilson and a sister of Samuel's is living with the family, who later mentions the younger children of Samuel in her will according to Elizabeth Ross. William S. is mentioned as Shade. The name Shade or Shadrach or Shadrick or Shadrack has descended to the present in both our Wilson family and a family from Martin/Pitt Cos and I am trying to tie the two families together. There are today only 7 or 8 known Shade Wilsons in the country and 2 father son sets of them are now in the same southern city after making very different treks from NC., one is ours from Sampson Co ca 1800 and one is from Martin/Pitt. The earliest of our Wilsons were in northern NC ca 1720 Marilyn > From: <jow@kua.net> > Reply-To: NC-PCFR-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 11:04:33 -0400 > To: NC-PCFR-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NC-PCFR] Bladen Co. > Resent-From: NC-PCFR-L@rootsweb.com > Resent-Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 08:51:50 -0600 > > Depending on how early your Wilson go: > > Bladen was cut off from New Hanover in 1734 > New Hanover was cut from Craven in 1729 > Craven was part of the Archdale Precinct of Bath Co. > > Pitt Co was sut off form Beaufort in 1760 > Beaufort was part of Bath until 1705 > > It seems as though there most likely was a migration to nearby counties. > > I have found a number of Shadracks in the late 1700s and early 1800s and > then just one Shadrick (Shadrack?) Depending on how early your Wilson go: Bladen was cut off from New Hanover in 1734 New Hanover was cut from Craven in 1729 Craven was part of the Archdale Precinct of Bath Co. Pitt Co was sut off form Beaufort in 1760 Beaufort was part of Bath until 1705 It seems as though there most likely was a migration to nearby counties. I have found a number of Shadracks in the late 1700s and early 1800s and then just one Shadrick (Shadrack?) Witherington born 1862 probably in Pitt Co. Linda and anyone else... Was Bladen Co a common destination for people from Pitt and Martin Cos? There was a Shadrack or Shade Wilson there on one census who might be connected to our Sampson Co Shadrack or Shade Wilson. He was also listed in the War of 1812 from Columbus Co which was split off of Bladen. The name Shade Wilson also occurs in Pitt Co. as son of Samuel Wilson in 1850. I am trying to connect them all to the same root family in northern NC. quite early, from which our line descends. The name Shadrack is quite unusual among Wilson surnamed families and they most all go by the nickname Shade. Charlie, I have his parents as John and Elizabeth Ward Nobles Lisa
Wiley NOBLES was born February 5, 1798 and died July 1, 1861. Who were Wiley's parents? I show they were Simon and Mary DIGGINS EWELL NOBLES; however, Walter B. Nobles states in a letter written in December 1946 that Wiley was the first son of Wiley Nobles who came from Dublin, Ireland. Any help would be appreciated. Charlie Nobles Edmond, OK
