    3. Hi Janice --- It was nice to meet you. The trip to the Archives was great. The dinner was fun. I would be willing to make a small donation for preservation of the Dawson/Jarrell House. To whom should I make the check payable? Thanks. 3. Move to save historic home in Grifton getting under way By Latisha R. Gray, Cox News Service Former Grifton Commissioner Frances Mewborn is racing against the clock to preserve the 1896 Dawson/Jarrell House as a piece of Grifton history. Mewborn may find herself fighting an uphill battle as she races against time to have the structure moved by Aug. 1. The house, located on Main Street in Grifton, is in a flood zone, and the town has it slated for demolition as early as August. The town will demolish the house as part of a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Buyout Program that promotes rebuilding in areas that are no longer habitable. "The board wants to see the house saved," Town Administrator Michael Peoples said. "But, it is impossible to do that with no money. If nothing is done, we are going to have to do something, because we are required by the federal government." According to Mewborn, the move would cost approximately $5,000, but the cost is minimal compared to the historic value the house could add to the town. "It will be a great boost to attract tourist as well as locals to our area," Mewborn said. "Money is needed, and I ask each of you to join in this effort." The land where the home sits was originally owned by a Jarrell family, and the home was the residence of the town's first doctor. "The house needs a lot of work," Mewborn said. "The big rush is getting the property moved." The proposed site for the house is located on the corner of Cannon Boulevard and Church Street. The Scarborough family donated the property. "The 'for sale' sign has been taken down," Mewborn said. "The deal has already been made." If the house is moved, Mewborn hopes to restore some of its original furniture. "Many pieces of furniture owned by the grandchildren may be brought back," she said. "A lot of people have been interested in helping." Mewborn is optimistic that efforts to save the house will have a domino effect and lead to a historic society in Grifton. "I've already talked to a historic group in Lenoir County," she said. "I have been led to believe that we can have a historic society in Grifton, even though we have one in the county." If the campaign is successful, Mewborn said a plaque with the names of donors will be hung in the house. For information about making donations toward saving the Dawson/Jarrell House, contact Mewborn at 524-4376 or send donations to P.O. Box 353, Grifton, N.C. 28530. All gifts will be returned if the effort fails.

    1. [NC-PCFR] Stancil Letters
    2. Tracy Stancil posted: Gwen, My Stancill research has so far been limited to NC. I too would be interested to know what indications there are that Jesse Stancill of Newton, GA was Godfrey's brother. I don't know anything else about the Jesse mentioned in the letters but he is obviously a brother of Godfrey Jr. dec'd 1850. The interesting thing here is that others have previously claimed that Godfrey Jr. only had one brother being Noble Stancill of Pitt County. In looking at some of the late 1700's deeds and at the 1790 census it seems clear that Godfrey Jr. , Noble and Jesse had several other brothers. I believe their names were John, William, and Nathan. Maybe if you or I could post a message on Genforum and Ancestry.com's Stancil message boards inquiring about the Newton County,GA Stancils then maybe someone out there might be able to share some information. Tracy The Stancil letter Number 3 says "Uncle Jesse Stancil who lived in Madison County in this state had also departed this life...... He lived with Mr. Jones Ridley before he died." I found the Madison County, MS census for 1850 on USGEn Web. There is Jesse Stancil; age 60, Gin Wright, born in NC living in the household of Samuel J. Ridley. This would be the Jesse referred to in the letter. This would make Jesse in the letter born in 1790. The Jesse in Newton County, GA was born about 1770. The Jesse in Newton County, GA is in the 1830 Newton County census as between 50 and 60 years old. It is assumed that Jesse in Newton County died in the 1830's as he is no longer listed in the census in Newton County. If these census records are correct then there are two different Jesse Stancils here. It seems now to me that the Jesse in Newton County, GA is not a son of Godfrey, Sr. There is a book entitled The Stansel Family by Edwin Nathaniel Stansel that has information on the family of Jesse Stansel family from Newton County, GA. The book does not ties Jesse to a father. But it does say he was born 10/21/1770 in NC. Jesse and some of his sons were Methodist ministers. Bennett K. Stansell, a son, of Jesse Stansell of GA was living in Clay County, Alabama when the 1880 census was taken. The census record says that Bennett's father was born in NC. It will be interesting to get further information or opinions on these Jesse's. Tracy, if you would post a message on other Stencil message boards concerning the relationship, if any, between the Newton, GA Stancils and the Pitt County, NC Stancils, that would be nice. Maybe we could get this mystery solved. Gwen

I will be posting abstracted obituaries from the minutes of the annual meetings of the Kehukee Primitive Baptist Association...also the names of a number of early Primitive Baptist Churches in this association and some of the ministers. 3. Dear Tracy, I am sorry for the delay in answering your letter. I have been away for the past week. The marriage of Alice Stancil and Samuel Potter could have been in Pitt Co. He was the fourth child of nine children born to Dempsey Potter b. 1813 & d. after 1880 and Sarah Phillips b. 1814 & d. bef. 1880. Samuel was b. 1842 in Greene Co. I think that this is a possible connection. What do you think? 3. Hi Cousin Jo, I don't have a remedy to offer for removing spots from photograph originals; but, I can recommend the next best course of action. I highly recommend you submit your precious photographs to a reputable business that restores old photographs. They can make a digitized copies that remove tears and blemishes that can result in a pristine looking product. It is is inevitable that old photographs from that period are going to continue to deteriorate no matter what you do to try to preserve them. I have had over 50 photographs restored and they look great. Even if the originals parish, those priceless images will live on for many, many future generations to enjoy. Good luck in your restoration efforts. Cousin John Alexandria, VA. Pitt Co./Green Co. 3. Paula, appreciate the help. Appears these Elks are tied into the Jacob and Samuel Elks lines. John Hudson m. Nancy Elks and had a son John b. 1800. All lived in Grimesland/Black Jack area. The Hudsons are my wife's line. I have some loose Elks info that I have never been abele to connect. All of this will help. You do a great job of helping others.
