Hello there! Back in June I asked if there was anyone down there in Pitt County who could do a huge favor for me. I know that June and July are very busy times for all of you and I am sure that that is why I have not had any responses to my request. I have an ancestor, JOSIAH WRIGHT, who died in the Greenville area in Feb. 1792 and is buried in the Cherry Hill Cemetery. He is my brick wall. I do not know the year he was born or the names of his parents. IF I knew the year he was born it would help me immensely & might break down that wall. What I am hoping for is someone who could dig around the front of the stone to find out if either it had a birthdate for him OR tell his age at death. I would be willing to pay you to do this for me and would be eternally grateful! Oh, one more question - could someone give me the address of the Pitt Co. Genealogical Society, please? I have just completed a book on my Wright Family Genealogy and Allied Families and would like to give a copy to your society. Thank you so very, very much. Priscilla

Martha, Does this article give any info on Abraham Adams or his wife Barthia? Lisa
July 1853 James G Tomlinson in court made oath that Mary Nall, widow of Nicholas, that Nicholas was a soldier in Revoluntionary War and (Mary) died Dec 25, 1845 and left no living children. She left grandchildren: James G Tomlinson, Aaron Tyson and William M Tyson. These are all of the children she did leave. The record above is from Moore Co NC court minutes If this is the William M. Tyson from Greene Co, this is a huge clue for Tyson researchers. I found this in a random search at the web site below: http://www.mindspring.com/~mooregen/various.htm Paula Anne Baker paulabaker69@hotmail.com Researching BAKER, MANNING, TYSON, STOCKS AND OTHERS in Pitt County NC and Greene County NC and COLE, NORMAN, WHITE, SUTTON AND OTHERS in SC, GA, and LA _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
I have just waded through one of the most interesting and complex articles I have ever read and it will take several readings to really grasp the information in it. It is in the new NCGJ and entitled "Legends of Black Beard and His Ties to Bath Town: A study of Historical Events Using Genealogical Methodology". It starts off by reiterating what many of us know - genealogists know they have to know something of the history of the time they are researching but many historians have scorned the study of genealogy to study their history. It does help that the authors were working in a county with its early records. All through the article is information on many of the early families of Bath Town and their relationship to Black Beard and most important, genealogical information on some of these families that later found their way into our area. Tracy was at LCC this morning before they opened the doors to read this article - it gives strong circumstantial evidence that Susannah, the first wife of John Martin Franck of Jones Co, was the daughter of Capt. James Beard and the sister of Black Beard. What was Franck doing marrying a lady from Bath Town who only appears to have been there for a few years. Although the article is heavily footnoted, there are two references of a personal interest that do not have a footnote. It states more than once that Ann Darden, the widow of Jacob Darden of IOW was a Williamson. I tried to find her surname without any success so that is going to take some work. Although it does not give Ann's parents it states that her grandmother was Joan Allen Williamson Burnett Proctor. Ann moved to NC, purchased Beard's land and has many descendants in Pitt and Greene Counties. The authors hinted at some relationships that could be interesting to check out. It also states that Jacob and Ann's daughter, Ann, married first Abraham Adams and 2nd William Ormond - that much we know - and 3rd Wyriott Ormond. I have never heard that information - Betty, you know anything about that marriage? The article does discount with proof the family tradition that Black Beard married Mary Ormond. The late Lee Edwards would be disappointed. Although it does not give genealogical information, Edward Salter is discussed as is the Barrow family. The article discusses several families that came out of SC into the Bath area and there was a Beard family in SC. The article suggests these people all knew each other before moving to NC, had business dealings with each other (including the Moore family) and without question were highly involved with Black Beard prior to June 1718. Suggest you might want to check with your local library and see if you can find a copy of this Journal. It is well worth reading. Martha
Paula, They should go on the Archives, Vital Stats. Why don't you type all the ones you have up in text format with line breaks (no tabs), entitle the file Birth and Death Certificates for Greene and Pitt County. Send them to Guy - GPOTTS1@nc.rr.com - by attachment. In the subject put for Pitt and Greene Archives. Put a note asking him to put on one county and link to the other. Thanks - will make a nice addition. Martha At 09:35 AM 8/12/02 -0500, you wrote: >Martha, >Could we start a spot for Death Certificates on the Greene Co site? Tracy, A "patroller" was someone who was appointed in each district of the county to patrol for slaves..making sure they were following the laws....like walking around with a pass, not congregationing together, looking for runaway slaves, etc. What you saw probably was a list of patrollers or a list by someone who was the head patroller for that district. I've been a little distracted for a couple weeks, but just have a brief question here. I have found a reference to a death which is said to have occurred in Pitt County in 1764. There is a source given for this information that I have never heard of. The source mentioned is called the "Pitt County Patroller". Has anyone ever heard of this? Is this some kind of periodical ? This has me puzzled. Thanks, Tracy
Hello all and sundry! PLEASE NOTE that I will be off-line for at least a couple of weeks while moving across town (found a nice condo with a service contract!), so please don't send me any photos, transcriptions, or questions for the PCFR website until further notice. My inbox runneth over! Will be unsubbing from all mail lists to keep the inbox(es) as low as possible while I'm out of commission. Thanks to each and every one of you for the kind words you frequently send. Will miss the traffic! In the meantime, if at all possible, stay cool (it's REALLY been hot here!), and don't write to me. Stay tuned, Elizabeth (Betsy) Ross webmaster, http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncpcfr/ _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
This note posted on Greene Co. mail list regarding the Dobbs Co.(Greene and Lenoir) and Jones Co. Reunion being planned for next summer. If you are interested in attending, fill out a survey for them and let them know what you would like to see them offer at the Reunion. They are in the planning stage now and would appreciate your input. This will be the first Reunion for this group.
