William Haywood Dail, Jr. b. 3-14-1878 d. 2-2-1939 In Roger's article it states Dail told the paper he didn't actually eat the ballots, only chewed on them to difigure the negative votes. He told others privately he did eat some of the ballots. He thought it was necessary to do this so the college would be located in Greenville. He states that he stood at the ballot box so no others would touch the votes. He said he was not sorry he did this. Great story.

When did William Haywood Dail die? I have heard something about that vote counting from a story passed down in the Cobb family. It was said that Kinchen Wiley Cobb was privy to that vote counting and that each of the men who were there swore not to tell unless he was the last one living. However, Cobb family stories were (and still are) usually exagerated or embellished. Still interested in Calvin Moye and wondering about the relationship between Calvin and Wyatt Moye. Their ages seem to be fairly close and Wyatt witnessed Calvin's Pitt County deed dated 11-8-1820 from deed book BB page 185. My main reason for writing today is to share something I stumbled upon that I thought was interesting. Especially for Roger , or anyone else, if you haven't seen this before. Historical Sketches of North Carolina 1584-1851 shows the following: page 168- Wyatt Moye served in the NC Senate from Greene County for the years 1829-1834. page 169- Wyatt Moye served in the NC Senate from Guilford County in 1835. page 147- Wyatt Moye served in the NC House of Commons along with William F. Dancy from Forsyth County in 1846( This was probably really Stokes County as Forsyth was formed from Stokes about 1849.) page 147- Wyatt Moye served in the NC Senate from Forsythe County in 1848. This may mean that there could be documents found in Guilford, Stokes, and Forsythe Counties that might be relevant to some of the Pitt County Moyes. Tracy

Our website has been upgraded and updated! You no longer have to remember that long address...we can now be found at http://newbern.cpclib.org/research/ so be sure to change your favorites in your browser or make changes to your website. The improved website includes two brand new features... First is the "Craven County Digital History Exhibit" which includes maps, currency, and books that have been digitized, described, transcribed and placed online for your research use. See copies of the actual North Carolina currency that your ancestors used from colonial days to the early 1900s...View maps of the world and of Craven County...read accounts of Confederate Prisoners of War or check to see if your ancestor is listed in the 1893 New Berne City Directory. This exhibit was made possible by a $14,000 LSTA Grant that allowed us to purchase the equipment and software to produce the site. Second is the "New Bern Obituary Index" which indexes the dates of obituaries and death notices in New Bern newspapers. The bulk of the index includes obituaries from 1969 to July 2002. Most of the 1860s and 1870s are also indexed. A few other years are also included. Please excuse some of the duplications...we're still trying to figure out how they are duplicating themselves. Finally, the Craven County Register of Deeds has posted their birth and death indexes (1914-present) and marriage indexes (about 1967 to present) and certain land transactions since 1999 on the internet. We have linked to their site on our resources page. Over the next few days...there may be times when the site is unavailable as we make a few subtle changes. In the meantime...enjoy!! William Haywood Dail, Jr. was a farmer, tobacconist, brick maker, car dealer, builder and avid horse racer. Outstanding citizen of Greenville. Reported that when the votes were cast as to the location of East Carolina Teachers College he was counting ate some of the adverse votes so it would be in Greenville. It is reported that he made some of the bricks for the first building at the college. He married Mary Dorcas Blow, daugther of Alexander Lillington Blow. They had son William Haywood, III who died at about 9 years old. As mentioned previously it appears he and Carrie Dail were brother and sister, children of William Haywood, Sr. and Virginia Sugg. This information was taken from article written by Roger Kammerer for the Greenville Times. As usual Roger does an outstanding job.
Mr. Todd, Are you the son of James William amd Betty Faye Fowler Todd? I believe we are related on both my grandmother's side of the family thru the Fowlers, she grew up in Columbus County, and on my grandfather's side thru the Collins, he was born in Greenville. Was wondering if you knew who were the parents of your 4th great grandmother Martha Bev Spivey were? John, you were correct. Carrie and Charles O'Hagan Laughinghouse are buried in Cherry Hill. They had son Haywood Dail Laughinghouse b. 1-16-1902 d. 11-9-1948. I am thinking there was an article on William Haywood Dail, Jr. as being an outstanding businessman in Greenville. If you check Cherry Hill cemetery records you will find the O'Hagans are buried here also. Charles O. Laughinghouse was son of Joseph John Laughinghouse and Elizabeth O'Hagen. Figure you have that since you are interested in the Laughinghouse.

Don't know about Chowan. Family tradition says that Thomas Dail was married to Sarah Tripp of Pitt or Greene but I have never seen any documentation to prove it. Martha
John, I have just a brief note on William Haywood Dail, Sr. was married to Virginia Sugg. Had son William Haywood Dail, Jr. b. ca 1878. Brenda: Many, many, many thanks on a great report about your August meeting....wish I could donate about $20,000 for the budget, computer, etc.---you folks have come a long, long way since you first got organized just a few short years ago!! I want to join the PCFR group and subscribe to your quarterly publication, so I will visit your website, get the forms, and send my money right away. I am also very much interested in attending the October PCFR reunion this year, and I hope I can get my plans firmed up/nailed down soon. Will download a form for that also and complete it ASAP. I was home for 2 family reunions in June (Todds and related families meeting in Duplin County at Warsaw and Suttons and related families meeting in Pitt County at Bell Arthur), and the two reunions made my vacation one of the most rewarding family visits I've experienced in many, many years. I was born in 1937 in Greenville on a street which is now a part of the ECU campus, moved to Warsaw in late 1945, attended ECU 1955-56, came to Texas in the air force, graduated at University of Texas at Austin and have lived here in Houston for most of the intervening years since 1956. While in Greenville this summer, a sister, a cousin and I visited the Evans Cemetery at the Colonial Mall, which you mention in your August report. The concrete block wall around it provides for lots of protection I'm sure, but wouldn't a nice wrought iron fence with a historical plaque for the family look a lot better? The two surnames of my mothers parents are Sutton and White. And we are related to the Evans of Pitt and Duplin Counties as well as the many Browns of Duplin County. Wish I lived in Greenville and could attend all your meetings and volunteer for a lot of work in your projects. Again, thanks millions for a great report. Hope to see you and many others at the October 11 and 12 reunion this year. With the greatest best wishes for a grand reunion this year for PCFR members and guests, I hope 2003 will also be PCFRs best year ever. Sincerely, J. O.
