Here are excerpts from an article in East Carolina University's publication, "Pieces of Eight." I know you'll agree that this is exciting news! As stated in the article, this information is online at www.lib.ecu.edu/exhibits. Janice Gurganus Pieces of Eight Volume 25, Number 4 GREENVILLE, NC December 2, 2002 East Carolina University History Goes Digital Joyner Adds Online Exhibits By George Threewitts Two new digital exhibits at ECU's Joyner Library allow access to North Carolina history by anyone, anywhere, at any time. The two new online exhibits are part of four exhibits now included in the Eastern North Carolina Digital History Exhibits available at www.lib.ecu.edu/exhibits. Visitors to the web site can examine the exploits of the early 18th century explorer and naturalist, John Lawson. Lawson, famous for starting the towns of Bath and New Bern, traveled the wilds of eastern North Carolina before his untimely death in 1711. He surveyed fields, rivers and streams to observe and write about the plants, animals and native people. It was a time when England was pondering the resources of the "New World" and Lawson was more than apt in the skill of "show and tell." Accounts of Lawson's influence and experience as a surveyor, explorer, land speculator, fur trader, naturalist, ethnographer, and writer is intended as a valuable resources for learning about eastern North Carolina. The exhibit includes letters and other writings. There are also court records from cases and hearings related to Lawson, part of his will, and excerpts from magazines and books published since his death. Also providing insight into North Carolina's history are the online census records available through the library's Pitt County Digital Tobacco History Exhibit. The exhibit contains county census data from 1900 that identify the people and places in Pitt County. Easy to find and search, the records include every piece of information recorded by the census-takers such as occupation, street address, ownership of house or farm and the birthplace of parents.

I have had requests for the PCFR address for payment of dues. Make the check payable to Pitt County Family Researchers. Dues for 2003 are $30. Mail to: Pitt County Family Researchers, Inc. PO Box 20339 Greenville, NC 27858-0339 Thanks! Brenda
A friend of mine compiled some of the deeds from Ellison's books in order by deed book. There is not an index to her work but you can very easily follow the purchase and sale of property in this order. She did not get to the Rogers and McGowan families although she was working on the project of compiling more families. I have copies of 40 families that she did do. If you will email me privately with name of family you are interested in I will check and see if she did it. Bill
I bought my set of these books in 1998 from Ms. Ellison's daughter. At that time she was charging $45 for the four volumes, an unbelievable deal! Somewhere???I have that address. When I find it I'll send it to you...hope it's still a good address. They have been one of my most valuable Pitt Co. tools for research at home. When I finish ROGERS for Jeanne, I'll look at your McGowans. That may be after Christmas because I'm going out of town for a week. Brenda, I have been trying to find a copy of that book for some time, but of course living in Delaware I've had no luck. If you ever come across the McGowan family while your looking thru it, would you let me know. I have been trying to find any early info on my family. Thanks so much in advance.
Just a reminder to everyone...the dues for PCFR will be $30 for 2003, and this is due by the end of January. First Quarterly of the year comes out in Feb. This increase in dues was explained earlier this Fall on the NC-PCFR mail list and in a letter. It is simply that costs for the Quarterly, Reunion and other service projects have increased to the point that we have been operating at a loss for some time. The surplus we enjoyed for the first few years is gone. Some of you have already sent in checks for $20. For everyone who does this, Janice has to contact you to request another check for $10. For those who do not have e-mail, she has to write a letter...more expense and more time for Janice, who already spends an awesome amount of time serving all of us! So...ATTENTION! make a note of this and let's all help her out by sending a check for the correct amount. Hopefully we will begin putting together the new Surname book after Christmas. If any of you have not sent in your surnames, please do so soon if you wish to be included in the book. Send them to Laymond Elks ELKSLD@aol.com or Janice Gurganus jtginnc@cox.net We will have a regular meeting in December on the 17th, at 7:00 at Sheppard Memorial Library. Attendance at the meetings has been amazing this year, averaging 25-30 members each meeting, and our membership is over 300 now. Hopefully, 2003 will be a very productive year for us. The board has discussed some possible new projects for our group that could be exciting for all of us. Don't forget the Picturing Pitt County Project. If you have pictures you want scanned to be included in that resource contact Eleanor at jallen@sprintmail.com or e-mail the pictures to Janice or me. jtginnc@cox.net bstocks@cox.net I think Eleanor has over 750 already on CD and many of us local members haven't even turned ours in yet. Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday..... and may this Christmas season be the best ever for each of you. Brenda DAVIS,STOKES,COX,TRIPP,HARPER,JONES,ADAMS,HARDEE,and STOCKS

I have seen a reference to a community or Post Office called Winona that was somewhere in the Belvoir Township of Pitt County. Does anyone know where that was ? I think it was late 1800's or turn of the century. I wondered if it might have been a former name for the Penny Hill area? Tracy

I can't believe it! I just took some books to Sheppard last week to donate to their Friends of the Library book sale, and in one of the boxes were two books about family crests. If you remind me next week, I'll call and ask if they will let me try to find them. Janice
Tonight I went to the Thanksgiving mass where the priest who is from Pennsylvania mentioned an old Pennsylvania Dutch saying that I had heard before but had forgotten. It touched my heart again and I wanted to share with y'all as it is so appropriate as we celebrate Thanksgiving. The old saying is simply this: "I wish you enough". I wish you enough. Enough what you might be thinking. Well, I wish you enough sunlight to brighten your days but I wish you enough rain so that you are truly thankful for the sunshine. I wish you enough joy but I wish you enough pain so that you will be truly thankful for the good times. I wish you enough gain but I wish you enough loss so that you will be truly thankful for all you possess. I wish you enough hello's but I wish you enough goodbyes so that you will be truly thankful for the hello's ...... I wish you all enough! Happy Thanksgiving, Tracy
Does anyone know where you can find any information on Family Crests (Coat Of Arms)? Thank you, in advance, for any help you can provide... Laymond Elks (elksld@aol.com)
