Marilyn, Haven't tried to because it is not my line. That was just information someone sent to me. Would certainly think the name came from a surname somewhere. According to the information I was sent - Liscombe was Liscombe Jones bc 1680 in Talbot Co, Md. My source has Liscombe and William Taylor married in Beaufort Co but I believe they married in Norfolk Co. Anyway might give you two places to look - Norfolk and Talbot. Lisa; The Liscomb/Liscombe/Liscom name appears to be unusual. Might be a useful surname to use in sorting out our commons names...your Taylor & my Wilson. On the subject of William Taylor, I have made a sort of half-hearted attempt to find the William Taylor who m. Mary Wilson of Edgecombe Co. If you know anything about such a couple, let me know. William Taylor & wife, Polly (Wilson) Taylor were named in the estate records of James W. Wilson of Edgecombe & Halifax, which indicate that he had died by 1832. The administrator was Lewis Dicken Wilson another brother of Mary "Polly" Wilson Taylor. Tracy, Thank you. Lisa
Lisa, I believe it is. Another given name for men in that family was Burrell, and Burrell Bell is also found in Pitt County. Benjamin Bell was also a common name in this family. There was a Benjamin Bell in Pitt and Edgecombe counties back in the 1700's, and while I don't know his lineage there might be a connection between that Benjamin and Balaam. Balaam Bell was born January 4, 1765 and christened February 24, 1765. His godparents were: Cornelius Loftin, William and Amy Richardson. All this from the parish register of Albemarle Parish, Sussex County. Jean Bill Linder, dec knew more about the various Taylor families in Eastern NC than anyone. He said William who married Dinah Deall was the son of Jacob Taylor. Bill stated this was the William who lived to be 114 years old and he had a brother Jacob. Bill had information on Rhoda and John Haddock's children including Esther who married Nasbey Mills but he doesn't have the information that they moved out. Donna has William who married Dinah Deal as the son of William and Lipscomb Jones - William Sr from Norfolk. Given the name Lipscomb in the William and Dinah family would be more inclined to think this is correct. Both Bill and Donna have documentation to back up these lines. I can only assume there were two different William Taylors in the area and they got confused. I need to get into Beaufort deeds which I can't do from here but think Dinah Deale might be my ancestor but not her husband, William Taylor. Thanks. Jean; I did not have time before work to answer this message, but Stephen Witherington md into the other Wilson family of Gibson Co. This other family fell on hard times at one point and our Shade Wilson paid for a funeral for the other Wilson family. There is strong indication of some sort of shirt tail relationship, but we have never been able to prove it. Now I think it might be in SS VA. It looks like their family was in Brunswick VA and likely connected in the early 1700s to our William Wilson who was of Bertie & Northampton NC. I did notice the Witherington name in Brunswick...1798 Brunswick: Tax List includes Wilson Williams p. 43; Benjamin Wilson p. 43; John Wilson p. 43; Samuel Witherington p. 41, JOHN WALLACE p. 43; John Wall, p.42 Any connection with the Pitt Co Witheringtons? I am missing 2 of William's sons John and James and several daughters. Been stuck for 2 years now. Marilyn, A John Sutton was living in Houston Co, GA in 1830 in the same area as Robert Worthington (Witherington). John had 2 boys under five, 1 female 10-15 and he and his spouse 20-30. An Allen Sutton in Houston Co, 1830, resided a ways away with 2 males under five, 1 female under five, 1 bet fie and ten and one male 20-30 and 2 females 20-30. In the 1840 census John is gone. This might be the one who died before 1837. Allen is listed as 40-50. Did he just turn 40? In the 1850 census Allen is 51 born in NC with spouse Frances 53 born in GA. The children are William 22; Maryan 24; Martha 21; Hamilton 21?; Seaborn 12; also listed is aCharles Smith 8 and a Sarah Lewis 11. Could these be grandchildren? Jean; There were Witheringtons who migrated to Gibson Co TN also. Somewhere I have information on these Witheringtons, but don't remember offhand where they came from. I believe they married Wilsons, a branch which I have so far not been able to positively connect to our Wilson branch. Paula; I am not actually researching Suttons although there were a couple of Sutton marriages into our Wilson family in Sampson Co, NC. However in doing work on records in Gibson Co TN I ran into a couple of 1837 records concerning the estate of a John Sutton which mentioned a fee paid to the administrator for traveling to Pulaski, GA to sell property of the estate there, a 6 week trip. Some of the expenses were disallowed by the estate commissioners as the vouchers "being from another state and without Proof and one for Rettin Sutton not even having a receipt, we consider them not good vouchers". The matter was turned over to the court for a ruling. The only voucher approved was for a local man, James M Wilson.
