    1. Evans/Forbes Family Cemetery Relocations; Falkland Hwy "Rock Spring" Community
    2. Bob Forbes
    3. Dear PCFR Group, My search for ancestors in Pitt County has led to the discovery of two neglected family cemeteries along the Falkland Hwy, in addition to the one behind my old homeplace where my grandparents, uncle, aunt and foster gr-grandparents are buried. Proceeds from timber harvesting last fall have enabled me to move forward with plans to consolidate these small family plots into a larger one that will be more accessible and easier to maintain. There is a strict legal procedure involved, including posting of a notice in the local newspaper at least four times. Thinking there may be interested persons in this group who don't subscribe to the local newspaper or otherwise haven't seen the notice, I have copied the legal notice currently running in the Daily Reflector and pasted it below. I am scheduled to make a brief presentation about it to the regular meeting of Pitt County Commissioners, Mon. Dec. 19. I have contracted with Ward Sutton & Co. of Rocky Mount to do the work, once the Commissioners have officially authorized it. Sometime later in the spring after restoration has been completed and the grass has grown back, I want to hold a brief dedication ceremony onsite for descendants and other interested parties. When the time comes, I will update this group on those plans. Following is the notice as it appears in the Daily Reflector: "NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DISINTER, REMOVE AND REINTER GRAVES: Notice is hereby given to the known and unknown relatives of those persons buried in The Evans/Forbes and Arthur Forbes Family Cemeteries in Pitt County, North Carolina. The Evans/Forbes Cemetery is located approximately 200 feet northeast of Rock Spring Free Will Baptist Church on N.C. 43 North and The Arthur Forbes Cemetery is located approximately 500 feet northwest of the intersection of Sean Drive and N.C. 43 North. KNOWNS: EVANS/ FORBES CEMETERY: William J. Evans - DOB: 1824 - DOD: 1872; Susan Caroline (Forbes) Evans - DOB: 1835 - DOD: 1908; Richard Snowood Evans - DOB: 1867 - DOD: 1907; John Forbes Evans - DOB: 1864 - DOD: 1918; Mrs. India (Christman) Evans - DOB: 1844 - DOD: 1919; Leona C. dau. of W.J. and S. Caroline Evans - DOB: 1870 - DOD: 1871; W.J. Evans - DOB: 1872 - DOD: 1912; Clinton H. son of W.J. and Nannie Evans 0 DOB: 1913 - DOD: 1914; Mattie Rives (Mother of Lillian Rives Forbes) - DOB: 1867 - DOD: 1937.UNKNOWNS There are several unknown graves in said cemetery. KNOWNS: ARTHUR FORBES CEMETERY: Arthur Forbes son of Arthur and Juda Forbes - DOB: 1806 - DOD: 1881. There could be some unknown graves in said cemetery. Then all of the graves known and unknown will be relocated and reinterred in the Forbes Family Cemetery, located approximately 400 feet north of the intersection of MacGregor Downs Road (SR#1201) and N.C. 43 North. Then a complete record of where these deceased persons will be reinterred will be on file with the Pitt County Register of Deeds, Greenville, North Carolina. You are further notified that the graves are being moved under the provisions of North Carolina General Statute # 65.13, and that the removals will not begin until this notice has been published four (4) successive times in The Daily Reflector, Greenville, North Carolina and until approval to do so has been given by the Pitt County Board of Commissioners, Greenville, North Carolina. This the 21st day of November, 2005. By Robert H. Forbes, Jr. 8023 Newton Road Waxhaw, NC 28173 (704) 243-2299 R. Ward Sutton 2905 Wellington Drive P.O. 3. Dani, Sorry I do not research WHITE. I do research DAVIS, and I'm missing the names of two females born between 1825 and 1835 according to the census records. Betsy Ross gave me this information. Maybe this will help you. Frederick White (b. 1824) was named father of illegitimate child by Eliz. Jones in 1858. ( From Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly, Vol. 2, May 2001, "Pitt County Bastardy Bonds") In 1860 census Elizabeth Jones, age 23, is living next door to him in the Household of Robert and Rebecca Richmond. No 2 yr. old is listed. Frederick White married first Mary Davis, b.ca 1820. Their children were: Jacky Ann born ca 1844, Mary A. b. ca 1845-1917, John B. b. 1848, Susan A. (Puss) b.ca 1850-1914, Martha died 1930, Margaret b. ca 1857. Frederick White married second Frances (Franky) Jones, dau. of James and Mary Jones, on Dec. 20, 1873 in Pitt Co. She was born ca 1849-50 and died in 1900. Buried in Jones graveyard in Ayden, NC (Pitt Co.) 3. I thought the head of the Pungo was further north. That does add another interesting note. Gurganus is a very common name in Martin Co., but I don't know of any in my grandmother's background. Probably, there are many other surnames locally associated with Indian heritage, and one of hers must be among them. 3. this is interesting.... along the Pungo River there were Indian settlements....I have never heard them spoken of as any particular tribe...one of the "branches" has always been called Indian Run which name remains today....there was knowledge of Indians living "up the hoop hole" along the Pungo ...the older generation spoke of them and even gave some a name... for example, in name some of the early settlers of the community called Pungo, the list begins with "Tommie Gurganus" "an old man below Indian Run"....and it is an accepted fact that the Gurganus family had a lot of Indian blood.....every now and then, there appears someone in the family who has jet black hair....obviously the Indian blood still flows...but...still there has been no tribe attributed to the Gurganus line... aaaaahhhh, the mysteries... and in passing, the head of the Pungo lies in Washington / Beaufort counties....and the rivers were the highways as you know... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jo Prytherch" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, December 01, 2005 12:52 PM Subject: [NC-PCFR] Indian Heritage > Many of us with very early roots in Eastern NC have been told that we have some Native American blood. 1. LEWIS CEMETERY
    2. Bill Kittrell
    3. These names were taken from list by timber company. Possibly site was on their property. Cannot be sure all of these are correct. It may give someone a hint of relationships. This is given for information and has not been documented. Another source might be the records of Mr. House as he surveyed many sites in Beaufort County. He might have done this one. Beaufort County Nevil Creek Road William Lewis d. Dec 11, 1731(BK Note: Seems mighty early, but could be correct date) Susanah Durham 1760 - 1825 Joseph Lewis, Sr. d. Jan 19, 1825 Joseph L.
