    3. The link below is a lengthy genealogy report that may be of some interest to anyone with ties to Charles Rollins, Revolutionary War pensioner, dec'd 1840's in Pitt County. It is worth reading the entire thing. It is regarding a James Rawlins who first witnessed a deed in Pitt County in 1773. James Rawlins was apparently a tory who was living in Martin County in 1776/1777. He was arrested in 1777 trying to flee with his family from Mattumuskeet (sp?). He gave depositions after his capture about the Gourd Patch or Llewellyn Conspiracy. The report seems to suggest he was a brother of our Charles Rollins, that they may have had ties to Boston and or London. Does anyone have the contents of Charles Rollins will probated 1843 I think? http://www.rawlins.cnchost.com/rawlins/quest.html

Martha, I found a reference in Pitt County, North Carolina deed records about the wife of John P. Harper. The deed transaction was between John P. Harper and John Jenkins, Deed Book II, Page 105,date of 1839. In the deed it says that John P. Harper's wife is named Mary, and that she is the daughter of Charles Jenkins, deceased. Charles Jenkins did indeed have a daughter named Mary "Polly", and I had not found out what happened to her until now. I will try to check out a copy of the original deed to confirm the info. on Mary. This makes three children of Charles Jenkins who married Harpers: Charles C. married Courtney Harper; Jonathan W.L. married Lurana Harper; and Mary married John P. Harper. 3. Bill, Hey, I am sending you what I have collected on this family. On Apr 20, 2006, at 7:55 PM, Bill Kittrell wrote: > Looking information on Charles Jenkins family according to estate > record Pitt Deed Book DD page 136 1825. Charles JENKINS' wife was Mary FRIZZLE, daughter of Jonathan FRIZZLE, Sr. and his wife Frances HALSTEAD. This Jonathan FRIZZLE, Sr. was born bef 1740 in Princess Anne Co., VA. His wife Frances HALSTEAD came from a Norfolk County, VA family. Jonathan FRIZZLE, Sr. and his wife Frances HALSTEAD were also the parents of Jonathan FRIZZLE, Jr. who married Rutha ROGERS. They are my ancestors. Jonathan FRIZZLE, Jr. and Rutha ROGERS FRIZZLE are buried in the FRIZZLE, ROGERS, CARMAN Cemetery just off Hwy 903 about .5 mi. west of Rountree Crossroads. The cemetery has a large old magnolia tree in it, off the road in a cultivated field. Three generations of my ancestors are buried there, Jonathan and Rutha, their daughter Elizabeth Halstead FRIZZLE and her husband Edward Bernard CARMAN, and their son Edward Coward "E. C." CARMAN and his wife Cornelia P. MOORE. Edward Coward "E. C." CARMAN's second wife Melissa HARRIS is also buried in that cemetery. I am not sure where Edward Bernard CARMAN's second wife Martha E. LANGLEY CARMAN was buried or when she died, since she was younger than Edward and was still living when he died. This is something I would like to know. Back to Jonathan FRIZZLE, Sr. and his wife Frances HALSTEAD, they had other children: Mary FRIZZLE, of course, who married Charles JENKINS. Mary died about 1820/1824, Pitt County, according to Joe Slattery. Also, “... One of Jonathan FRIZZLE, Sr.'s daughters married a Benjamin HOOKER, and a daughter of theirs was living in Wilson County, Tenn. in 1830” according to Joe Slattery. I am not certain of this, but I think Jonathan FRIZZLE, Sr. and his wife Frances HALSTEAD may have had a daughter Elizabeth who married Gideon OLDS and that she may have been the Elizabeth OLDS who died 25 Mar 1838. Don't quote me on this, I just have a hunch. Elizabeth OLDS death is mentioned in a letter by Rutha ROGERS FRIZZLE. One of the letters that Ann Vernelson owns and was published in PCFR Quarterly a few years ago. (Cannot remember the date published.) The following information is from Joe Slattery who helped me with my FRIZZLE and HALSTEAD line. From: [email protected] Date: Thu, 1 Feb 2001 01:57:25 EST Subject: Re: FW: HALSTEAD-FRIZZLE, Princess Anne Co., VA To: [email protected] Trish, Thank you for writing. I am glad to meet another researcher and relative on this Frizzle line. My tie-in is with Mary, daughter of Jonathan Sr. and Frances Halstead. She married Charles Jenkins, probably in Pitt County, N.C. I don't have absolute proof of the marriage of Jonathan Sr. to Frances, but I first came across the reference to a Frizzle-Halstead in the Halstead/Holstead manuscript put out by Claude and Marillyn Halstead in 1986. I found this at the Mormon library. It had that Frances, daughter of Simon and Ann Halstead, married a Frizzell. The first name of the Frizzell was not given. I knew about the Halstead middle names in the Jonathan R. Frizzle family. The Halsteads lived in Norfolk County, Virginia. The only Frizzle who was also living in Norfolk County in the late 1760's was Jonathan. In fact, he was living in the same area as the Halsteads. I am pretty sure that Jonathan was from Princess Anne County in Virginia. He is mentioned in several records of that county, but I haven't been able to determine his father yet. There was a line of Frizzles going back to the late 1600's in Princess Anne and Norfolk Counties. This was a different line than one which was in Isle of Wight County, not too far away. So far I haven't found many researchers working on our line in Virginia. Jonathan Sr. came to North Carolina by 1779. He was on the 1790 census in Craven County, N.C., showing only one son and up to 6 daughters. I don't know all the daughers names at this time, just three of them. There was another Frizzle who was in Pitt County at an early date. This was John Frizzle, born 1717 supposedly. He was married to Mary Rountree, and they had six daughters, but no sons. This John lived to be over 100 years old, dying in 1818. I believe that he is related to Jonathan Sr. somehow, maybe a brother. That's all for now. If you have any questions, please let me know. Sincerely, Joe Slattery “Thanks for your e-mail. We are cousins on two lines -- the Frizzles and the Jenkins. On the Frizzles, as already mentioned, your Jonathan Jr. was brother to my Mary. I don't know exactly when Mary was born, but she died in Pitt County 1820-1824. Mary's husband was Charles Jenkins, born by 1775. Charles was the brother of your Winnefred Jenkins.” — Joe Slattery Joe Slattery also sent me the following information which states that John JENKINS’ wife was actually named Mary BARNES. • From: [email protected] Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 22:16:24 EST Subject: Re: HALSTEAD-FRIZZLE, Princess Anne Co., VA To: [email protected] "Trish, Thanks for your e-mail. Charles was the brother of your Winnefred Jenkins. They were the children of John and Mary (Barnes) Jenkins. At first I found that Mary was a Cherry, but it turns out that she was a Barnes, daughter of John and Katherine Barnes. There was a Mary Cherry who married a Jenkins, but that marriage was to James Jenkins, who was John's brother. One or more researchers got them mixed up years ago, and put Mary Cherry with John instead of James. John was son of John Sr. and Anne. If you don't have the siblings of Charles and Winnefred, they were: Zadock, Reddick, Irvin, Ephraim, Abraham, Isaac, Sarah, and Keziah. I don't know much about them except for Abraham, born in 1757, was in Revolutionary War, and died in 1823. I have worked on finding the father of John Jenkins Sr., but nothing solid so far. He may tie in to Henry Jenkins who lived in Nansemond County, Virginia around 1700. On your Caleb Cannon II: if he was the son of Caleb Cannon, then it does look like you are connected to the John Frizzle family also. Caleb Cannon married Celia (Celah) Frizzle, daughter of John and Mary Rountree Frizzle. The Rountree family was close to both Jonathan and John Frizzle. John was married to a Rountree, and Jonathan was living next to Francis Rountree Sr. in 1790 and was the executor of the will of William Rountree in 1791 in Craven County. I am not sure how Jonathan and John are related, but believe that they are. John first shows up in Pitt County about 1764. I'm not sure where he was before that. He was born about 1717 supposedly. Jonathan was probably younger than that. That's all for now. Sincerely, Joe Slattery " As to the reliability of Joe Slattery's research, Martha Marble told me once that she had seldom found him to be wrong. Bill, Sammy Anson Pierce will have information on this JENKINS family, also. Sorry I couldn't make it to the last PCFR meeting — something always gets in the way. Trish

    1. Easter Break at the FHC
    2. Easter Greetings, Once again I apologize for this late notice. Our regular "sign" maker is on hiatus from the FHC, and I forget that the responsibility has come back to me. The FHC will be closed Saturday, 15 Apr -, and Monday, 17 Apr 2006 for Easter weekend break. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, 18 Apr. In order to keep you better informed, I will post a list of scheduled 2006 closings on the bulletin board in the FHC. One or two carpet cleaning dates will be added to the list as soon as they are known. Occasionally the building is used for funerals, and will require quick unscheduled notice for our closing. We'll try to do better keeping you informed through the remainder of 2006. Sincerely, Laura Hanley Davis Greenville NC FHC

    2. Researching ELKS, BOWEN, GRIMSLEY, DENTON, JONES, HARRELL in Pitt and Greene Counties Hi, PCFR, My name is Katherine Elks, and I just signed on a couple of days ago, although I'm already fairly familiar with the site through perusing the archived messages. I am currently living in California (San Francisco Bay area) so unfortunately most of my "research" right now consists of reading other peoples' postings and various genealogy websites. I do have information compiled by family members on my Elks line in Pitt County that goes all the way back to Samuel Elks in 1781. So, for "Elks", I'm mainly interested in anything anybody knows that comes before that. (I'm familiar with the research done by Fred Willard on possible Indian and Lost Colony connections). And I'll be happy to share what I have. The rest of the names seem to be based in Greene County (I've subscribed there also). But I'm interested in hearing from anybody who has connections to these names in Pitt County, especially prior to 1850 or so. Thanks, Katherine

    1. Re: [NC-PCFR] Samuel Elks Family ...
    2. Katherine, You and I are definitely Kin... I have a lot of information on my Elks Family, thanks to many people that have contributed to my research. Bill Kittrell, Warren McRoy and Paul Harrison (as well as others) have given me a lot of help and I will gladly pass that help on. That is one of the things we, at Pitt County Family Researchers, do. Samuel Elks is my 5th Great Grandfather. My Father was Ernest Laymond Elks and my Grandfather was William Silas "Bill" Elks. My Great Grandfather was John A. Elks. I was raised in Grimesland, NC (Pitt County) which is near the Beaufort County line. We have a lot of Kin in Beaufort County.... I would love to share information with you! Laymond D. 1. 1830 Beaufort County census
    2. John B. McGowan
    3. Folks, If anyone has done any transcribing on the 1830 Beaufort County census, please contact me. We are attempting to transcribe that census and then the 1840 Beaufort County census to put online for your use, however with the poor condition of that census, it is getting more difficult to read with these old eyes. As you probably know, we have already transcribed the 1790 thru the 1820 and the 1850 Beaufort censuses. So if anyone has done any transcribing on this census, please let me know. Many thanks, John
