Here is a note from Shirley Kingsley, who lives in Elmira, NY. She is willing to do some look-ups at the Civil War Cemetery at Elmira, NY. If you had ancestors who died at the prison, Shirley might can be of help to you. NOTE: Include "CIVIL WAR" in subject line. Thanks to Shirley for offering this help. I live in the Elmira, NY area................very close to the National Civil War Cemetry. It did not dawn on me until I came across one of my ancestors who had been captured during the War, sent to the notorious POW camp in Elmira, NY, died and was buried there. I visited the site. The caretakers are quite helpful, all information is readily available. Besides having the names on the headstones, each one is numbered so a particular one is easy to find. A meticulous list was kept, by a John Jones, of all the prisoners. Now, the city is in the process of making his home into a museum, and putting up markers in the area to show just where the prison camp was located. I found one of my ancestors in the cemetary. If you think there would be anyone interested, I`d be glad to look, for others, who have ancestors unfortunate enough to have died in the Elmira prison camp. The headstones are in remarkably good condition and photograph quite well. Anyone can contact me at this e-mail address, include "civil war" in the subject line. Otherwise, it will just be deleted. I do not open mail from anyone with whom I am not familiar. SHIRLEY KINGSLEY [email protected]

I have been helping a couple of people with the Ross family. One family is the Theophious McGilbert Ross family. Some of this family still lives in the Vanceboro area. Walter Ross of San Antonio, TX is one that is researching this family. The William "Billy" Ross family is another. They were mainly north of the Tar River. Have set up a Ross file to place all Ross information that I find. I have not been able to connect all of the different families. Will post some information.
Mr. Kittrell, Thanks for the post. My 4th great grandparents were Britton Edwards d. 1844 and Ann Orrell. I don't have any Orrell info. but surely this lady you mention must be some of her kin. I need to get down to Beaufort County and search. My Edwards come into Pitt County and live in the Clay Root area where they marry into the Gardner line. Judy N. Lewis
Bill, I think the Riley Ross might have been the Husband of Cecelia Hill, D/O Joshua Hill and Sarah Purcell Of Beaufort County
There is a Peebles book at Sheppard Library. It is Peebles Family 1600-1962 by Anne Bradbury Peebles. One of the oldest Peebles listed is David Peebles on August 5, 1650 obtained 833 acres of land in Prince George County, VA. His wife may have been Elspet Mackie. The following may have been sisters and brothers. William, John, Criston (female), Alison (female) Did not have time to make a lot of notes. Will check it again. Bill

Folks, Thanks to Sallie Gargis, the 1840 Beaufort Co., NC Census is now online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbeafor/1840bo.htm We now have the 1790-1850 Beaufort censuses online and the 1860 census (with index) will be coming very soon. Also, thanks to one of our fellow researchers who kindly donated the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Beaufort County Census "Images" (with special permission from S-K Publications) which are all now online in the USGenWeb Archives at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/beaufort/census/1860/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/beaufort/census/1870/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/beaufort/census/1880/ These are the original images of the censuses which have been microfilmed, however, there are no indexes for these censuses at present. It is my hope that transcribing these censuses will aid researchers in the Hyde, Beaufort, & Pamlico area. John
Dear All, I am posting a note for Greg Bullock, the secretary for the Pitt County Researchers. He and his wife have moved to a temporary location while they are building a new house. He will NOT be on line all summer. So, if there is any business or concerns about Pitt County Family Researchers business please direct it to me and I will see that Greg gets the messages. Remember that the PCFR National Reunion will be Oct.13-14 and the speakers have been lined up. Flyers are being made and information will be posted on our website and in the August Quarterly. I hope you make plans to come join us!! Many Thanks, Roger Kammerer
Virginia - I believe that the area referred to as Black Swamp in those days was in SE Pitt County which in more recent times has been called Blackjack, and is roughly the area of VOA Site B today. Most folks familiar with Pitt County know where the VOA sites (A, B, & C) are. Each of those sites was located in upland swamps (also referred to as "pocosins") that are too poorly drained to farm. Site B in the Blackjack area is due south of Grimesland. I may be wrong, but I believe that area was previously known as Black Swamp. Makes sense with respect to the land sale you referred to, since it's near Beaufort County where the Respess family owned a lot of land. My research indicates that the May family owned land all over Pitt County in the mid-to-late 1700's, before they started concentrating their land holdings around the present-day Farmville area. This sale might be related to the May family's land consolidation in western Pitt County and divestment in their lands elsewhere. Thank you so much for this info. I have long wondered if my Bakers could have come from Maryland way back. In Wayne Co. my distant cousin's line married into the Seymour family. Hi Bill, I have no real information on the Bland family. However, my grandmother's sister, Susan Ann Paramore, married a James Bland. I know my grandmother grew up and married in Pitt County although the Harris family moved to Halifax County around the 1900's. Their parents were Maggie Magnolia Liggett and Joseph Green Paramore, married January 25, 1882. Polly Fisher, my cousin, has done considerable research on the Paramore family and had only a little information on this marriage of Susan Ann Paramore and James Bland (In fact, my father told me his name was Joseph, but he may not have remembered correctly). Polly listed two children for them with no dates: James Bland and Simon Bland. I hope this helps you.
