    3. Howdy All! Caught the following message posted to the ROWAN CO. List this past week. The author, Julie Hampton Ganis, gave me permission to repost it here. ________________________________________________________________________ Julie wrote: "Since there has been some mention of Cavin's lately--- "I am not a Cavin descendant, but a section of a book caught my eye tonight and I thought I'd share. This is from the book: The Scots-Irish in the Hills of Tennessee, by Billy Kennedy, 1995, Londonberry. "Page 155 says this about the Cavins: "Presbyterian missionary Samuel Cavin left Belfast in 1737 and after landing in Philadelphia he became pastor of Spring Creek Church at Mechanicsburn (sp), Pennsylvania. Cavin died in 1750 and his descendants moved south, settling first in Iredell County, North Carolina. They followed Daniel Boone across the mountains into East Tennessee and set up homes in Washington and Hawkins counties in the north east of the state. Some of the Cavins live in this region today - others spread out to Middle Tennessee (Lebanon and Franklin) and west (Weakley County)." "This may be old news to you Cavin researchers, but thought I'd share it just in case!! ' "Also, several other Old Rowan families are mentioned including (these were born in Ireland): Alexander BAILEY (b.1751-lived in Rowan Co, d.1835 IND), Capt. John BROWN (b.1738, lived in Wilkes Co), Major Joseph DICKSON (b.1745, lived in Rowan Co., d.1825 TN), Samuel MACKIE (b.1761, lived in Burke Co, NC-d.1845, GA), Capt. Ephraim McLEAN (b.1730, lived in Burke Co, NC-d.KY), Walter O'NEILL (b.1760, lived in Burke Co, NC, d.after 1833 PA ), Lt. Col. James STEEN (b.1734, d.1781 Rowan Co). There are probably others, but the index doesn't give place names. Many other names are mentioned from nearby counties including Tryon, Rutherford, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, etc., and also SC.
