My name is Linda Whitener Blystone. I have been trying to find information on my grandmother, Nettie Mae Freeland. She was born on Sept. 23, 1881 in Iredell County. She was the daughter of Chalmers Freeland and Mary Jane Bustle. Chalmers was the son of Robert Nesbit Freeland and Elizabeth Holzheimer Scroggs (the widow Scroggs). Robert and Elizabeth had 5 children, Eugenia Salina, Laura L., Robert Monmouth, Albert Nesbit and Chalmers. Mary Jane was the daughter of Peter Franklin Bustle and Margaret Mills. Chalmers sister Laura married Milas A. Cavin on Dec. 31, 1868. Nettie was married on Sept. 9, 1911 to Clarence LaFayette Whitener at the home of Mrs. Laura Cavin in Barringer Township. The witnesses were Laura Cavin, Metta Cavin and Ida Cavin. The minister was J. Meek White. Nettie had 2 children, Clarence Chalmers Whitener (my father) and Ida Freeland Whitener. Ida married Marcellus Yount and resided in Rocky Mount, N.C. My father married Helen Elizabeth Simpson from Winston-Salem. No one has been able to determine who Robert Freeland's parents were. Chalmers disappeared from Iredell County in the late 1880s. He supposedly "went west". Nettie had a brother named Oscar who was adopted by a family named Birmingham. He was living in Colorado at the time of her death in 1962. I would appreciate any information anyone can pass along. I can be contacted at: LBlystone@stratos.net
