Does anyone have a clue as to what family a William Woods, born ABT 1792 in NC descends? William shows up on the 1860 Spartanburg County SC census (Fort Prince P.O.) with a wife named Elizabeth born ABT 1791, also in NC. Please keep in mind that the name may well have been Wood (without the s) in NC. There are no Woodses whatsoever on the 1850 Spartanburg County Census, and the only Woods "head of household" on the 1860 Spartanburg County Census are this William, and my elusive gggrandfather Henry J. Woods (b NC 1826). On the 1860 Spartanburg County Census, Henry's family is enumerated as follows: Father: Henry J. Woods (b. NC 1826) Wife: Mary H. Woods (b SC 1822) Children: Nathan J Woods (b SC 1851) Lynch E. Woods (b SC 1846) female (perhaps a previous Woods-Lynch marriage?) James H. Woods (b SC 1848) (my great-grandfather) John B. Woods (b SC 1849) William B. Woods (b SC 1850) Thomas J. Woods (b SC 1854) Luther L. Woods (b SC 1856) Margaret C. Woods (b SC 1858) Robert H. Woods (b SC 1859) As both William and Henry, seemingly from nowhere, appear in Spartanburg SC in time for the 1860 Census, and they both were born in NC, perhaps they are somehow connected? Or perhaps it it just another coincidence. In any event, Henry's family ended up, by 1870, moving on to Greene County , TN. Thanks for any help. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
I am looking for information on Mary G Campbell and B Alexander Fortner married in Alexander County NC 30 March 1880 thanks Evelyn

William F. May, b. 1837, married Temperance Whitlock in Davie Co. in 1857. William F. May married Rachel Martha Cranfill in Davie Co. in 1859. William F. and wife, Rachel M. were listed on the 1880 Davie census. William F. May found on 1900 census in Iredell County with wife Emely C. and twin daughter, Mamie and Minnie, b. March 1889. I think the William F. May in Iredell was the same as the one in Davie. William F. May of Davie was in the Civil War. William F. May of Iredell County filed for a pension in 1905. I am looking for the marriage of William F. May and Emely C. ??. Since daughter were born in March of 1889, marriage may have taken place in 1888. The marriage definitley took place between 1880 and 1890. Does anyone have access to the 80's marriages? Thank you, Norma Z.

Can someone out there do a lookup for on The 1840/1850 Iredell census for William and Nancy Edwards and Charles and Martha Edwards. Thanks bunches Barbara
I have copies of pages from Charles ORTON's Bible, pubilshed in Edinburgh in 1791. I found the following people listed in the Bible and would like to know how they connect to The ORTON Family: 1. John HUGHEY and Elizabeth KING 2. Benjamin JOHNSON 3. Elizabeth HUEY-1723 4. James IRWIN-1793 5. Margaret KING Note: Charles ORTON, bJune 1, 1775 in Rowan Co., NC, m(1) Marget___b. July 16, 1775, m(2) Violet____ b. Oct. 18, 1789 Charles' parents: James ORTON andSarah VANDERFORD Thanks, Bill ORTON borton@liveh2o.com
Would like help on where to go from here: I have .... 1. Census records of 1840 showing Hugh Stamper in Iredell. 2. Estate record dated 1841 of estate sale of Hugh Stamper. 3. Death certificate for J.H. Stamper listing Hugh Stamper & Maggie Wagner/parents. 4. Death certificate for R.A. Stamper listing Abe & Polly Stamper/parents. 5. Statement from the Military of service & death of Gurney A. Stamper. All of the above are somehow tied together but am at a standstill. In the 1850 Iredell census I find only a James Stamper (age 22) and his mother Mary (age 60) and also my direct line...Catherine Stamper (widow of John) age 38 along with her children Mary E. "Polly", Gilbert, George and Margaret. No other STAMPERS listed in Iredell. I know that Mary E. was the mother of my great grandmother, Margaret "Maggie" Stamper Lackey. Later census show Maggie's brothers, James M., Gilbert A. along with Maggie. 1870 census shows Nancy Stamper widow of James B. Stamper [who I found in 1850 census in Catawba Co.] But no other Stampers. Maggie is always listed in the household of Catherine Stamper along with her mother, Mary E. Cannot determine where the men of the household are nor can I prove if Catherine was the mother of J.H. Stamper or possibly an aunt. According to the marriage certificates for James M. Stamper and Gilbert A. Stamper their parents names appeared on one as, J.H. Stamper and M.E. Stamper and on the other as, Hugh & Polly Stamper. Since the only thing listed in the NC archives for wills/estates on the Stampers is the one I presently have on Hugh, where should I go from here to tie these people together. I strongly believe that J.H. Stamper was the son of Hugh Stamper but can't prove it and have not even been able to determine what the "J" stood for in his name. Also, how R.A. Stamper is also tied into this family. Will tax list give me clues to other Stampers that I have not seen in census? Are there published books on church memberships? Were there local publications during the 1860's in Iredell that would list those killed during the civil war and possibly list their widows and children [Maggie's father is reported to have died as a result of the war possibly after he got home....no pension papers.]? Thanks to all on the list for great past advice. Just really stumped by all this. I am open to any and all suggestions as I have a big mess and a headache. Sherry

Hi All! I am most interested in trying to find any connection between my 3rdGGF, ROBERT CAVIN, and that of JOHN CAVIN (m. Jane, Iredell Co., NC). I have pieced together an outline (below) of what I think is a possible link between them, but it is only gut feeling and speculation on my part; perhaps a little wishful thinking, too. I have posted this to the CAVIN List, the Iredell Co. List and the Alexander Co. List in the past, so please forgive me if this is old news to you. My theoretical outline goes as follows: 1. Rev. SAMUEL CAVIN - immigrated to the US (Phil., PA) 11/16/1737. As a Presbyterian Minister, he spent most of his time at various churches in this general area. Near the end of his career, he spent itinerating in Virginia and other vacancies. He died 11/09/1740, at the age of 49 and is buried at the Silver Springs Cemetery near Harrisburg, PA. Supposedly, his descendants moved into Virginia and Iredell Co., NC, and then into East Tennessee's Hawkins Co. ------------------undocumented information below this line-------------- 2. SAMUEL CAVIN - Rowan Co., NC - d.~1761-1762 *See Note 1, below. 3. ROBERT CAVIN - Rowan Co., NC - md. SARAH 01/15/1762 *See Note 1, below. 4. SAMUEL CAVIN - Iredell Co., NC - had kids 4. JOHN CAVIN - Iredell Co., NC - md. JANE 5. Arabella 5. William V. 5. John 5. Martha, Leana, Mary & Eliza (??Les??) 5. Susan Brown (??Les??) 4. ROBERT CAVIN - Iredell Co., NC, md. SUSANNAH HAINES dau. of RALPH HAINES (?) 5. Robert Winston 5. William H. 5. Sallie 5. Ziza Gates (This is my "bunch") 4. WILLIAM CAVIN - Iredell Co., NC - md. ARABELLA 5. Jane 5. Robert 6. Eliz., b. 1830 in TN,md. Josephus Smith 5. William 5. John H. 5. Rosanah 5. Miles (?Probably Milas?...Les) 5. Mary Nicholson (??...Nicholson...??...Les) NOTES: 1. Samuel(2.) and Robert(3.) may have been brothers and not Father/Son as I have shown. If you would, please see if any of your data matches up with any of the above? Many thanks in advance. Has anyone tried Robert Ragan's genealogy help books, especially the one on searching the net? Are they really helpful? Barbara
Is Hunting Creek a town? I saw the creek where Interstate 77 crosses over and wondered how and where one would access gravesites and other landmarks in the area? My 3ggrandmother Temperance MOODY was born there in 1801. Her mother Mary Frances YOUNG and grandfather Thomas Cadet YOUNG are buried there. That's only about 3-1/2 hours from me and I would like to visit this summer. If anybody could shed some light on what's around Hunting Creek I sure would appreciate the info. Thanks, Robert Lyles

My earliest ancestor was Moses NESBITT (other spellings NISBET, NISBIT, NESBIT). He was born in either Pennsylvania or County Down, Ireland. Believed to have been married in Lancaster County PA about 1760/63 to Elizabeth McClelland, Daughter of William MCCLELLAND and Mary ROSS. Moved to Rowan County, North Carolina (present day Iredell County) in early 1760's. He settled on Reedy Creek of the Catawba River, southwest of present day Statesville (near Troutman) on land adjoining Samuel and Christopher HOUSTON who also came from Lancaster County, PA about the same time and to whom he may have been related. There are also connections to the BROWN (William) and IRWIN, families. I have no information on siblings of Moses or his ancestors. Looking for connections to any of these families of early Iredell County.
Re: Frank Mills My records show Frank, Claude E., & Billy were sons of William Mills (1816-1895) and Mary Ann Richburg. William was one of the many sons of Charles Nathaniel Mills (1758 St. Marys Co. MD-1843 Iredell Co. NC) and Elizabeth Rial. I have not verified this info. and this is all that I have. I received it through a Tennessee "cousin" who had received it from another "cousin". Sorry that I could not be of more help.
