This is a one time announcement. http://www.historicalart.net/ is pleased to announce our new historical map website. Panoramic Maps, 1847-1929 offer "bird's-eye" views of nineteenth and early twentieth century cities and towns across the nation. Each map contains a detailed look at architecture and urban planning of the period, and allows users to zoom in on particular areas. Our work focuses on large-scale printing of these map collections, produced in part with MrSID® (multiresolution seamless image database) technology by LizardTech. The library's initial use of this technology was for the delivery of historic panoramic maps that have been scanned into raster image files, so they could be viewed on a computer monitor. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. Most of these maps offer a genealogical value because they served as merchant directories, and most businesses of the time used their surname as part of the business name. We invite you to take a look. Historical Art

Dear Lists, Sorry if you get a repeated message due to subscribing to several lists, as I do. I thought I had seen on a list a long time ago, that the names Carter and Stiltner were used as one in the same as last names. Depending on what last name the person wanted to use. Something to that effect. Can anyone verify the relationship of the two names and maybe where each originated? For example: My gggrandfather was Milbourn Jackson Stiltner. His daughter Pricy(My ggrandmother) was recognized in an obit as a survivor of relation as Pricy Carter. I have not found any information confirming the Carter relationship to her. I am pretty positive she was only married to my ggrandfather Lee Anderson Arthur. Her mother was Martha Woods. Could Carter have come from that side. What I was told before was something to the fact that Some used the Stiltner name and some used the Carter name. Milbourn Jackson Stiltner was born somewhere in VA. and Martha Woods was born somewhere in KY. I'm not sure where Pricy was born. I was told recently that Lee was born possibly in Lewis County, WV. (Or VA) His mother Mary Margaret Arthur was born in Bath Co., VA. I have no record of her ever being married. My ggrandfather was half Indian. The picture I have recently seen pretty much proves that due to his complexion and other features. At the time he was born though there were several tribes in the area. Any suggestion regarding any of the above mentioned names will be greatly appreciated!!! Anything even if you don't think it is important might help in my search. Thank you in advance! Faith To e-mail me directly: blount@digital.net Surnames I am searching: ARTHUR, STILTNER, CARTER, WOODS, CARPENTER, CLEVENGER, FRIEND, BAXTER, DAVISSON, BLOUNT, SPINLER, GLASSBURN and some others off my tree branches.

We are looking for relatives from the Summerscales family. This is a marriage between John C. Kennedy and Elizabeth Crouston Kennedy and occurred during the "Trail of Tears" in the West Virginia area. We know they married sometime after the Civil War but not sure of the year. We are also interested in the story behind the "Trail of Tears". Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sorry I don't know anything about your family, but don't assume that they both had the same name. I have a cousin marriarge in my ancestry and neither the bride or the groom had the last name of the family they were both related to. They were children of two sisters. Example all fictional: John and Jane Doe have 2 daughters, Mary Doe and Elizabeth Doe. Mary Doe marries Henry Smith and they have a son, Fred Smith Elizabeth Doe marries Charles Brown and they have a daughter, Ann Brown Fred Smith marries Ann Brown, they are first cousins because their mothers are sisters. The surname of their grandparents, their mutual ancesters, is Doe and neither of their surnames is Doe. There are various different surname patterns with two sons or a son and daughter, depending on who has a son and who has a daughter.
