As I put together the story of my Bouvier-Couvoisier ancestors in DeSoto, Washington County, Nebraska (1855) I have realized that some of the information I have gathered may be of interest to this list. Reminiscences of "Old DeSoto" were collected from pioneers Charles Lazure, Oliver Bouvier, and Constant Cachelin. Submitted by Merri Vinton Part I “One of a few Indian villages along the Missouri River was located about a mile from the DeSoto boat landing. There were other two were in Bellevue, forty miles down river and Blackbird Hill, forty miles up river. There were Indian circles [sic foundations for the wigwams] to a depth of about thirty inches below the ground and usually about ten feet in diameter, over which the wigwam was erected and the loose ground was later banked around the outside of the wigwam or teepee. The fireplace was in the center of the circle with the top center of the tepee vented to limit the smoke. The opening to the teepee was always to the east side. It would take the greater part of a day for two men with good spades to dig out on of these circles and was plenty of work for an Indian. The village council circle was some sixty feet in diameter and pit-like. So large that years later Louis Bouvier and his bronco busters used this pit-like enclosure to break a carload of western bred broncos very remunerative after the doctor bills, splints, bandages, liniments and last but not least the Hostettler’s Bitters—at least 100% proof.[i] Each Indian village was founded near one of the several large water springs which gave them a continuous supply of pure cold water the year round. Water from these springs would flow for quite some distance down stream before freezing even in the coldest weather. Later a pioneer lady—Mrs. Bouvier—had taken the trouble to import and plant watercress in this stream. What a beautiful inspiring sight on a winter’s day to see dark green growing strip of this watercress six to eight feet wide, flanked on either side by a foot or more of fresh fallen snow. Like green garnish on a white frosted cake, these strikingly contrasted colors fairly transcended one’s imagination.” [ii] In 1916 Oliver Bouvier spoke of his home in DeSoto and his mother, Eugenie Courvoisier Bouvier. “Just above her log house, on the ridge, was the regular Indian trail and the Indians made it a point to stop at our house regularly, as they went to Fort Calhoun or to Omaha. She befriended them many times and they always treated her kindly. "Omaha Mary," who was often a caller at our house, was always at the head of her band. She was educated and could talk French well to us. What she said was law with all the Indians. Our creek was thick with beavers and as a small boy I could not trap them, but she could, and had her traps there and collected many skins from our place. I wanted her to show me the trick of it, but she would never allow me to follow her. At one time I sneaked along and she caught me in the act and grabbed me by the collar and with a switch in her hand, gave me a severe warming. This same squaw was an expert with bow and arrow, and I have seen her speedily cross the Missouri river in a canoe with but one oar. Our wall was always black and greasy by the Indians sitting against it while they ate the plates of mush and sorghum my mother served them.” [iii] Submitter Note: I believe "Omaha Mary" was Mary Gale, one of the wives of Joseph La Flesche. "Early History of Old DeSoto, Nebraska", pg 3 of 13 pg.transcript by Charles B. Lazure, The Blair Tribune, Blair NE, autumn of 1967 Subject: Round Lake "There were at that time three large lakes in the immediate vicinity of DeSoto. The two so-called Round Lakes about two miles south of the present site of DeSoto which years later was bisected by the railroad and highway 73. These two lakes were a prized resort by the early local anglers. Since they were the only lakes abounding with pike and pickerel in this locale. The DeSoto lake covered an area of more than a half-section and was quite deep being an earlier channel of the river. It was also a natural harbor for boats landing at this point. Later the south side of the lake was paralleled by the railroad tracks, and traveling hoboes often jungled here bathing and fishing for large clams with which the lake abounded, cooking their catch with appropriated potatoes from chance patches of spuds. The Indians also ha made extensive us of these large clam shells evidently as receptacles for food an drink, and as the edges of these clam shells were razor sharp they were no doubt used for skinning and the fleshing of hides and pelts. The Indian had no steel cutlery and flint knives were not in evidence at or near the village." Contributor's Note: The town of DeSoto no longer exists, nor do either of the lakes described. The Missouri River has swallowed up much of the area. There is a nuclear power plant near the river on the Nebraska (west) side of the river now at/near the location of old DeSoto. The area described could be in what is now Harrison Co, Iowa, but that's another discussion. Judy-Do you live in Harrison Co, or are you familiar with area at all? The change of the river has created an interesting situation and I am willing to discuss this further off list if you like. Hi Judy Thanks for your reply. There is some information in these recollections about Round Lake. I don't think they mention any names, but I'll forward what is written as I compile it. After continuing my transcription of these recollections, I have discovered that Joseph La Fleshe was also known by my ancestors and purchased horses from them. I'll respond to my own query and say that I believe the "Omaha Mary" is probably Mary Gale one of La Fleshe's wives. I have going over some recollections that were recorded by some of my family members in Washington Co (DeSoto) Nebraska. There are several references to a frequent visitor in their home known as "Omaha Mary", an Indian women. Apparently she was educated and was able to speak French with my ancestors in 1856. Does anyone know anything about the individual I describe? There are other recollections that describe an Indian village nearby. It was said to be the only one between Bellevue (40 mi south) and Black Bird (40 mi north). This would be a few miles north of present day Fort Calhoun, NE. Would the description of this village be of value to anyone? If so, I will happily share this unpublished information. Any clues about Mary will be welcome. Somehow I feel that she may have had some connection/relationship to Logan Fontenelle. Thanks for your help. Merri
Merri, In Harrison County, Iowa at Round lake there were several Indian families living I would say in 1930? as my grand parents lived on Round Lake and they would come to visit my family. My father can remember going to their camp as a young man (dad was born in 1918) and one of their children died in a house fire at the lake. I would be interested in any additional information you would have.
