Author: mombrock1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.ethnic.natam.nations.cherokee.cherokeefreedmen/139/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi. I'm looking for information and tools to find out my Native American Heritage. My grandfather lived in Kansas and his last name was Jackson...there are over 500 Jackson's on the Dawe's Roll, but I have lost the trail, as my grandfather and all but one or two of his siblings have died. My great, great grandmother on my mother's side was also Native American; however, she was "unofficially" adopted and we don't know the names of her real parents. Is there any other way that we could trace these two lines of ancestry? Also, is there a way that I can prove my ancestry, even if I can't trace these lines? Any help would be appreciated. I also have Native American on my dad's side of the family, but most of them were from the Indiana region. How could I trace that? I don't know about their relationship really, other than they had 2 children. I know he has a large family with Amanda J BROWN and was widowed. (I have her father as Anthony BROWN, born NC)It is said that John remarried and the kids didn't like the new wife and they ran her off by being just evil to her. I don't know if this was Maggie,(Margaret J MOORE)or not. I only have to go by what Fannie's daughter Georgia told me, what my grandfather said, and it was not much, and old letters other family members have in their possession. It seems that the MILLER line is well documented, it's Maggie's line that has me. I have her parents, Henry House MOORE and Mary ANKR*M. And I have parental names from Mary's death certificate, and the info she gave in the 1910 census. (She lived with Maggie) These lines all seem to come from OH, as I found Mary listed as Polly in the 1850 at the home of her in laws, Samuel House MOORE and Hannah SHEARMAN. Mary and Henry had been married the same month as the census, and I guess they called her Polly as a nickname. Where I get lost is her mother, Nancy CHILCOAT/CHILCOTE and Richard ANKR*M (For some reason the rumor was that Nancy was the Cherokee.) The informant on her death cert was a PJ THORP/THARP (We know we have a Peter who left poems behind and wonder if a marriage is missing, and if her maiden name was TH*RP.) I still find it odd that PJ TH*RP was the informant on the document, when she lived with Maggie. Any way, thank you for all of your hunting. I've been on this trail since 1984. As more information comes available, I look again. I will climb this wall! P Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.ethnic.natam.nations.cherokee.cherokeefreedmen/125.2.2.2.1.1.1.1.2.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, that's my family. My greatgrandfather was Maggie MOORE's 3rd husband, the other 2 being BENSON and JOHNSON. John Irvin (Ervin) MILLER was married to Amanda J BROWN I find: I find Amanda BROWN, Minnie BROWN and Beulah BROWN listed as Cherokee Freeman on Roll #2487/#2788 card #1038 http://www.okhistory.org/research/dawesresults.php?cardnum=1038&tribe=Cherokee&type=Freedmen Also a notation that this roll was taken about 1880. I also found quite a long time ago a family census sheet that included photographs, but as it is a photomcopy. I only had reports and interviews to go from. I spoke on the telephone to my grandfather's sister Fannie's daughter who at the time was about 80. She said, quote, "when Uncle Buck was a young boy they went to OK to live on his Indian land. He didn't like it there much so they came back." This was also the first time I had heard him called "Buck". IT did make sense, as a cousin of mine has a husband who does gen work and he had listed him as Buck instead of Elmer. I had emailed him on this, but never received a reply. John MILLER, I have his line traced back to immigration including D.A.R./S.A.R. applications, so I had ruled him out years ago. My greatgrandmother Maggie was my hard wall. I found she and her mother on, I think the 1900 US Census. They listed occupations as rug weavers. I then located my 2greatgrandmother's death cert and searched from that info. That was fun, an ANKR*M and a CHILCOAT/CHILCOTE with the informant being PJ TH*RP I have now come to the conclusion that the NA heritage comes from my John's widow Amanda before he married Maggie. The "Indian Land" may well have been Amanda and John's home, or one of his many children with her. I would still love to find records to support this conclusion. However, this is possibly why my Elmer believed himself Cherokee, although he claimed white as he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. Thanks! It appears that Margaret (Maggie) MOORE may have been married at least 3 times to : Jacob BENSON Mr JOHNSON John Ervin MILLER Can you verify that John Ervin MILLER was the father of Elmer Thomas MILLER ? The Dawes Index lists over 1300 individuals named MILLER, almost 800 are Cherokee. None are named Amanda. There are 10 ladies named Amanda BROWN. Which one do you think was married to your relative ? I'm not sure why you think Margaret (Maggie) MOORE/MILLER or your grandfather would be included in the Dawes Rolls. They weren't Citizens of the Cherokee Nation, they weren't Indian or Inter married whites, and they do not even appear to have been residing in Indian Territory at the time of the Dawes Allotment Act. ***He lived for a time in MO where Natives were deported to OK (Ind Terr)*** Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory were 2 seperate places. Missouri introduced it's own "removal" policies in the early 1800's.....around 70 years before your Grandfather was born. After removing the Osage Nation, and several other Indian Nations/Tribes, they then made it illegal for Indians to reside or even trade within the state.
