    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Myers, Mears, Meares, Briggs Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/5538/Hi2.2ACIB/6307 Message Board Post: Hi, I am trying to find out more about my g.g. grandmother CATHERINE MYERS and her father JOHN MYERS. Catherine married Henry Richard Briggs at St Thomas' in 1869 in Stepney, Mile End Old Town registration district in Middlesex/London. I have their marriage certificate and her father, John Myers' occupation was a 'cabman' at that time . Witnesses were: Sarah Ann Briggs (Henry's mother) and someone called George Costello. Catherine was born in 1848 in Walworth/Newington, Surrey (E.London). Her mother was called Susan (I don't yet know her maiden name, I am awaiting the birth certificate!) As far as I can tell Catherine was the youngest of at least seven children, being; Susan b.abt 1837 John b.abt 1839 Elizabeth b. abt.1840 Phoebe b.abt 1841 Ralph b.abt 1844 Emily b.abt 1848 Catherine b.1848 The family have been a little difficult to piece together as their surname seemed to change spelling from Mears, Meares and then to Myers. Catherine went on to have several children - Henry William b.1868 (my g.grandfather), Alfred, Blanch, Maria, Florence, Charles, Bertram & Frank. Catherine's elder brother Ralph seems to have married a 'Mary Ann' and had six children in the late 1860s-1870s called Thomas, Alice, Amy, Ralph, Blanch & Frank. My grandfather remembered his grandmother Catherine when he was a small boy - he said she was very stern, dressed all in black and known as the 'Grand Old Lady of Peckham'. Sounds wonderful... The fact that my grandfather remembered her (and he was born 1901) means she must have been alive at least until say 1903+ but I can't find her death date yet. Areas of interest include: Stepney, Walworth, Newington, Whitechapel, Mile End Old Town, Camberwell, Peckham etc. If anyone knows anything about this Mears/Meares/Myers family, I would sure be glad to hear from you! They seem to have been quite a large family...there must be some other descendants apart from me! Many thanks, Mary Lofthouse
