Most just accept someone else's data as factual. Trust me folks, just because someone saw it on Ancestry.Com does not mean it is factual. I,too am guilty of such mistakes in my early years of genealogy. For the record: JOHN MYERS 8 Aug 1783 to 12 Jul 1842 (my husband's 3x gt grandfather) was married to Rachel Wolfcale 29 Aug 1808 in Austintown, TRUMBULL Co OH (as it was known until the 1840's when it became part of Mahoning County OH. (we live there!) Source: I have a copy of their marriage certificate. Plus early census record. Plus record of John being recruited for War of 1812 (Under Capt Joshua T. Cotton) along with many others from Austintown Twp Trumbull Co. Source for John Myers death: 1)John and Rachel are found on the 1830 census of what was then known as Augusta Twp COLUMBIANA Co. OH but was Augusta Twp CARROLL Co OH in the 1840 census. 2) We have a copy of John's will as found in CARROLL Co OH records. And 3) We have been to (and photographed) his grave. It was John and Rachel's eldest son (hubby's 2x gt grand) JONATHAN WOLFCALE MYERS born 1810 Trumbull Co OH who bought and cleared land in Bloomdale WOOD Co. OH who moved with his wife and family from Trumbull Co to Wood Co in the 1840's. John Myers did serve in War of 1812 near Sandusky OH--and we have the tomahawk he took from an Indian during that war. ( both from "family lore" and a written account of the incident in an article done by the Firelands Historical Society as written by *don't have in front of me but think it was a General Wadsworth from that battle) As for place of birth of John Myers...his son stated it as Virginia on 1850 census. Having been only 40yrs old at that time I give that some weight. However, I have also heard Pennsylvania mentioned. But let's recall history....in the mid-late 1700's VIRGINIA claimed much of western PA. So I would have to ask.."was the birth actually in VA or was it in a portion of PA claimed by VA? Someone out there in "genealogy land" keeps posting that the John Myers born Aug 1783 who died in 1842 (our John Myers) parents were Jacob Myers and ? Ent. I have no doubt that there was a John Myers born abt the same time who had those parents...but is it the same John? That has NOT been proven. This same guy keeps claiming that all the early Myers were either Jewish or Lutheran Germans. Caveat: Unless there are solid sources to back it up...take it with a grain of salt. Sorry but this is a real pet peeve of mine. Genealogy should be about TRUTH, not rumor. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
