At fifteen years of age John became a member of a ships crew; and he spent the following twenty years visiting strange lands aboard ship. When the American Civil War broke out,he enlisted, at eighteen years of age, as an ordinary seaman aboard the battleship "Brooklyn"; on which he served for the next two years. In 1878 he migrated to Australia; arriving in Port Adelaide, which he made his home. John lived about one mile outside of town and in 1929 he was still quite active, often walking into the town of Port Adelaide three or four times a day. He worked as a watchman until he retired, around 1921. After that he spent most of his time building model yachts. I am looking for information on John Henry Myers especially a descendant. His headstone is in an unreadable condition and if I can find a descendant we can acquire him a new FREE bronze memorial fo! r his grave.
