So the DNA test the ancestry offers wont tell us any true blood lines, just possible matches, is this what you see? So far all of the lines I have seen with my Myers are close or strong possible matches. Is it mostly for the male side of the family? I am searching for a possible line to a Jacob Finney Myers whom I have been looking for a very long time. Is there a better DNA test you recommend? Sorry to hear about your brickwall. If you'd like to post Martha's husband name. and perhaps a child, or area that they lived - perhaps one of us could see if we see anything. We might not see anything but you never know ... as for no one appreciating it .. perhaps some may not but you never know who down the line will appreciate the work... I know 2 generations at least of my line don't but then now here I am trying to piece together stuff. I know I would have appreciated someone taking the time. So you never know! From: David L. Hi JoanMy line of Myers is traced back to Andrew Myers 1761 of PA. I found evidence in Green County PA of him serving 3 enlistments in the Revolutionery Army as an Indian spy at a fort in Point Pleasdant now WV. He was more than likely half breed to have been an Indian spy. He got a pension according to the records I found in PA. My line of Myers came to Tyler County WV from Green County, PA when an Andrew Myers bought a 90 acre farm for his son Elijah in the 1860's. Elijah was married to Naioma John. We were told that she was Native American. None ever registered as Native American. I never knew of any connection to the Myers line in this posting. Would the DNA thing be worthwhile for me to do. I have been told that Native Americans when they became Christians that they would take two first names like David John did or like Elisabeth Fox did, I think Elisabeth Fox decended from the Fox tribe of Indians with a connection to Chief White Eyes. Personally my opinion is that autosomal DNA testing is always valuable in sorting out ancestry on all sides of your tree. I personally favor starting with AncestryDNA because they have the largest database AND many of your DNA matches will have trees with their family info listed so you can compare. Native American MAY show up in the ethnicity estimates and it if DOES it proves it is factual. But failure to show up is not conclusive proof you do not have NA heritage. You can't prove a negative with autosomal DNA. with regard to ethnicity. Once you get your DNA results you can transfer the raw data to GEDMatch (free) to find additional DNA matches. You can also transfer to FTDNA Family Finder for free...but there is a $39 charge to "unlock" your matches. I feel all of this is very useful and reasonable considering what the results may be. Through autosomal matching on Ancestry I found my 2nd cousin who was a direct male line MYERS and did the Y test. Jennie, It my understanding this Frederick VA area near Winchester VA all way up to Lower current PA and parts of MD had 4 or 5 Myers families located here. I have spoke to the Local librarian in Historical Department and The Historical research Library to try and determine mine. It taken bit research to find out Exsactly which area the Frederick VA line was in as it changed frequently. You may need to get time period of ancestor and look in current Frederick County VA, Martinsburg West Virginia area, Frederick MD area and lower PA as this was Frederick VA at one time or another. Yes it was shock to me learning local History around this area has kept me busy but I do have Few leads here on my Family. I will keep my eyes open for you Jennie. Thanks for posting. If you do an autosomal DNA test such as the one offered by AncestryDNA you will have matches that include MYERS matches on any side of ancestral lines. A Y DNA test or mtDNA test won't tell you anything of a genealogical nature for your research and finding close relatives. I note that you used the subject mtDNA and your MYERS connection is your mother. While mtDNA is inherited through the mother it doesn't follow a surname line the way Y DNA does on the paternal side. mtDNA is inherited by all children from their mother (through the egg) but it is only passed down to the next generation through the female children (because it comes from the mother's egg). So while your MYERS mother would be your mtDNA line it would then pass to her mother's line (POTTS) and so on on back. To find MYERS relatives via DNA you would need to take an autosomal DNA test that covers all sides of your family tree. Or you would need to find a male relative (direct line MYERS) descendant of Robert Levi MYERS. > > With regard to the notation in the Bible that Bird Allen MYERS and his brother had "Indian blood" this may or may not be accurate. Many families have stories of Native American heritage but only a few of those stories are accurate. Regarding my Edward Myers and Elizabeth Griffin Myers who both died before 1850, their parents died after them, there may be a probate that names them and their children as heirs. This can also happen in land records. Or trying to find an bio of a sibling, who may mention Edward or Elizabeth. Many from the Griffin/Kyle/Johnston/Johnson family went to Dearborn IN, very early. Their are a lot of bios written up in the early Indiana/Ohio history book on all 3 of these surnames. I believe the book is on Ancestry. Regarding my Edward Myers, his 3rd son Marshall Emery Myers (or maybe it was Emery Marshall Myers) was born in Winchester, Frederick County, VA, no date of birth listed, but he was 71 years, 6 months old. By 1840, this family was in the 1840 Ralls County, MO census and in 1840 Edward and his two brothers-in-law, David & Joseph Griffin, were buying land for a lot of money. It’s a puzzle as where they got the money. Plus, we have very recently discovered that Edward & Elizabeth Myers and David & Joseph Griffin, are noted in a document associated with the Pettit family papers, 1810-1863. Other surnames are: Berry, Talbott, Miller, McClelland, Bryan, Hay, Price, Beard, Downing. This document is apparently at the Kentucky Historical Society. We have contacted them and waiting for a reply. We do not know what this document is or what it pertains to or why KY! It’s a puzzle. Hi- Just one comment. I note that you used the subject mtDNA and your MYERS connection is your mother. I am trying to find info on my great-great grandfather, Lafayette "Barney" Myers. He was born in April,1869 somewhere in Illinois, to parents Henry Myers (b. Ireland) and Nancy Barnett (b. Ohio). He was in Mullen, Nebraska in April 1896, when he married my great great grandmother Jessie Wickham there. He was supposedly from Peoria and/or Mt. Auburn (an Illinois town?), his father was Catholic, and he had had to leave Illinois after getting into a knife fight. He is listed in the 1900 census in Mullen precinct, Hooker County, Nebraska as a servant living in the household of one Edward Stephenson. That’s the last record I have of him, though there was a tale that he later went into a bar (in Nebraska?), swallowed a pill (cyanide?), and dropped dead. Jessie Wickham took their young son Willard and left him in the night, fleeing Nebraska to be with her family. Does anyone have any hints about where Lafayette “Barney” Myers may have ended up? Well, as long as everybody is asking.... My 'brick wall' happens to be a certain Abraham/Abrahm Meyers/Myers married to an Elizabeth (last name unknown). Both were born ca. 1770 in PA (county unknown). The only information I have been able to obtain on them comes from the death certificate I've picked up from the Eaton County, MI vital records for my Great-Great-Granddad Joseph Moyer/Meyers/Myers who was born in PA ca. 1801 and died in MI in 1891. On this certificate for Joseph, it identified his parents as being Abraham Meyers and wife Elizabeth Meyers. This whole line came from PA somewhere (trust me I'd love to know where), and settled in Chester Twp, Wayne Co., OH. Now I've found both Abe and Elizabeth living with Joseph and his wife Jane (VanOsdoll) in the 1850 census records for I believe Ashland Co., OH., but that has been the end of it. My best guess so far has been that Elizabeth's last name was 'Bechtel/Buchtel' or 'Freidt' or 'Light'. It's been years since I've tried searching any further for information on this, but specifically what I am after is positive info on Abraham and Elizabeth. Like actual dates and places of birth, death, marriage, children as well as their parents' names. T'would love any help I could get.
