However, I do not believe that the family of Myer Benjamin of Newport, RI, (aka Benjamin Myers, the father of Mordecai Myers, is related to the Myers/Hays/Mordecai family. Benjamin and Rachel were from Hungary and Austria. They are listed in Stern's First American Jewish Families: http://www.americanjewisharchives.org/pdfs/stern_p220.pdf The Mordecai book looks very interesting. I will order a copy. One is called The Myers Hays Mordecia families by Caroline Cowan. The other which more or less covers the southern group is a book called Mordecai, An Early American Family by Emily Bingham. There is a myfamily.com Myers; however, it is not this group of Myers. It appears that something has happened to the administrator of the Myers'/Moyers My Family out of Baltimore. I have an old family genealogy which states that I am a descendant of Benjamin Myers (Myer Benjamin) and his wife Rachel through a daughter Abigail who md a Jacobs and had a daughter, Susan Cecil Jacobs, in Nova Scotia in 1788. Unfortunately, First American Jewish Families by Stern only lists one daughter by name (your ancestor). I have contacted the AJA, but they have no further information on the names of the other daughters. Also mentioned in this genealogy are sisters Fanny who md Emanuel Ellis and Mary who md Barnette (although I wonder if the Barnette had skipped a generation). A letter between two daughters of Susan recounts how Mordecai Myers was still alive and had been Mayor of Schenectady. One daughter had written him, and he had responded immediately to their mother with a letter and picture. This letter states that they were relatives, but did not discuss how as this was clearly understood between the parties. If this message reaches you, or anyone else interested in this family please contact me. I would really like to fill out the Myer Benjamin family tree. Sincerely, Carolyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I just wanted to interject a possible blood connection to some Myers famlies to Gov Alexander Spotswood. The Spotswood connection to Jacob Myers of the Slate Creek Iron Works is through John Cockey Owings who purchased the Iron Works in the later 1790's. The Cockey family of Baltimore is married into the Gist family of Baltimore. Both Christopher Gist and Jacob Myers were with George Washington in Pittsburgh in 1754. Christopher Gist's great grandmother was Ann Washington. Patrick Henry, who gave Jacob Myers the 10,000 acres needed to built the Iron Works, is married to Gov Alexander Spotswood's granddaughter. It's a very tight family all around. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've also heard that the spelling with an 'A' or "I" was a mark of status, like major or minor. The use of expert sounds like Smith in English. Myers is the most common surname in Germany, like Smith is in England. Spotswood interest in Germans was their building expertise, because he hope to find silver and settled for iron. George Moyer expected to go to Pennsyvannia, but was held captive in the port, robbed of their savings and forced into servitude. Eventually they won their freedom in court. Evidently this was an arrangment between Spotwood and the ship's captain. There are some who make a connection between George Moyer/Majer/Miers of Germanna and Jacob Myers. But, others disagree... there were a lot of Myers. George Moyer's family did have some money, similar interests and followed the migration paths to Kentucky. The Michael Myers (George's son) line migrated to Rowan, NC then Barren County, Kentucky in the late 1700's probably with the Goss family... and then to Missouri and Indiana. My impression is they were farmers and the mills benefitted the local community. Several reached California during the goldrush. My ancestor built a very successful lumber mill near Truckee. It was considered state of the art for it's time, 1870, although there were lots of larger mills. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Photo66666, I am extremely intrigued with the information you appear to be chocked full of. Over the last few years I took it upon myself to start working on some of the collateral lines of my particular Myers family, only to discover that they included some of the members of the Germanna people who were indentured, falsely, by Gov. Spotswood because he believed the lies of a crooked ship's Captain. How I know this is that because my mother is directly related to several of the families who were indentured by Spotswood in the early 1700's and I have, like John Blankenbaker (a distant cousin of mine through my mother's side) have done extensive research on this line. When I started working on those collateral lines I find Myers marrying Broyles, Blankenbaker, et al and find them, as well, in Crawford County, Indiana where my Dad was born and raised. My great-great-grandmother is Mary Yeager, wife of Israel Olinger, daughter of Daniel and Susannah Yeager (they were cousins), whose line is directly traced back to Germanna. My father's line does link into these folks. Indirectly. To be honest with you, I have this overwhelming feeling to pick your brains for the information that seems to be stored in it. Because when I started reading your messages, after my last posting (the numerous amounts of Henry Myers' who were all located in Montgomery County, Kentucky about the same time, and had no originality in naming their children, because they named their children pretty much, the same as each other, which, of course, makes it totally difficult to differentiate between the two Henry Myers) I felt some kind of connection there, especially with the collateral line research I've been doing. My e-mail address is debmckay@bellsouth.net, and I know that the hierarchy of the board loves for us to chat about our families on this format, however, my questions may steer us out of the Myers line. Or the word myer compare to expert. How do you know they were from the French side of Switzerland? The oral history in my family is they were from Switzerland. The paper trail is to Germanna, where George Moyer was the indentured servant to Robert Beverly (the nation's first historian). John Blankenbaker, of Germanna.Net, believes they were in London for about 4 years before coming to America. So, I think it is likely they spoke English. Once they left Virginia, they always spelled their names Miers or Myers. My line was extremely migratory, usually moving their families several hundred miles or more and almost always living in remote places. They built a lot of mills and could converse in English, although their native language was German. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. These Myers families are really from the French side of Switzerland and have very strong connections to Germanna, Gov Alexander Spotswood and his family. They are expert iron and wood workers.
