As most of you already know, there have been some recent problems with servers at rootsweb. As a result it is possible that some mail was lost. So if you sent something recently and you haven't seen it come through you might want to check the archives for any of lists you are on and then post it again in a day or so. In addition, many AOL folks are not receiving all their mail. Again, you might want to check the archives for any missed messages on any of the lists you are on. I am sorry for all the problems but rest assured that rootsweb staff is working very long hours in an effort to get everything working again. Take care and have a great weekend. Emma
Good Morning Everyone, I am sure that most of you know by now that rootsweb has been having problems with one of their servers. Apparently the mail load was just too heavy for that server. So they have added another server and have moved some of the mail lists over to equalize the load a bit. As with anything else with computers there are often some "rough" spots to work out. So I thought I might remind all of you about these sites. First of all, if you think you might have bounced off some of the lists you were on you can check your subscriptions by going to password central and asking for list of your subscriptions. The URL is: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Then, if you think you have missed some postings to any of the mail lists you can check the archives for that mail list. Go to this URL and enter the name of the mail list. You can then look at the messages to the list by month. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ You can also search past messages for any mail list by going to this URL: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl First enter the name of the list you want to search. You will then get a screen and can search the messages by year. If you are interested in finding out other rootsweb mail lists that might be of interest then go to this URL. http://lists.rootsweb.com/ AND... finally.... if you have any questions concerning any list you might be on you can contact the list admin by sending a message to: [email protected] Replace the word - listname - with the name of the specific mail list. For example: [email protected] The message will be forwarded to that admin. Do be aware however, that if the server is down messages to the admin using the above admin address probably won't work. So you can also often contact the admin using their private e-mail address as well. Hope this helps a bit. Take care - Emma

Good Afternoon Everyone, I thought I would remind all of you about some of these sites. All are helpful and contain information of all types. First of all..... The USGenWeb Project. I would imagine that most of you are already aware of this project and use it frequently. If you haven't then you are really missing something. Hundreds and Hundreds of volunteers work very hard to provide information by locality - histories, census records, cemetery records, court records, etc. This URL will get you to the main page for the project: http://www.usgenweb.org/ This URL will take you to a graphic which will allow you to click on any state. From there you can access the various county sites. http://www.usgenweb.org/statelinks.html One word of caution. The main page also contains a link to the USGenWeb Archives project. Be aware that when you use the search engine provided for the archives that search engine does NOT also search the main county pages. So make sure you check both the individual county pages and the county archives pages for information. Confusing I know - but that's the way it is...<g>. Then try this one. While USGennet is not a project in the same sense that USGenWeb is, it does serve as a host to various other projects. Here is the URL to their main page. http://www.usgennet.org/ And this URL will take you to the search engine for all sites hosted by USGennet. http://www.usgennet.org/search/ One of the projects hosted by USGennet is the Americal Local History Network. The following URL will take you to their main site. From there you can check the various state and county sites. http://www.alhn.org/ Another project hosted by USGennet is the American History and Genealogy Project. Again, this URL will take you to their main site. From there you can go to the various state and county sites. http://www.ahgp.org/ As with anything else out there on the internet, make sure you read their information - mission, purpose, terms of service, etc. Take care and I hope you enjoy these sites. Emma
Morning Everyone, A couple of weeks ago I discovered something on google and have been giving it a try. You can set google to send you an automatic news alert on a specific topic. I set it for 3 of the surnames I am especially interested in and thought I would see what happened. It is quite helpful actually. Anytime that surname pops up in any of the newspapers google monitors I get sent a message and a link to that message. I can then go and read the actual text if I want. Now.... granted... I get stuff I am not really interested in but it doesn't take long to figure those out. AND... I don't think I would want to set it for surnames line Smith, Johnson, Jones, Clark, etc.....<g>. I also stayed away from surnames that could also crop up in other ways - like my Street surname.... LOL. But, I chose some not so common names and it is working quite well. So... some of you might want to give it a try. Go to goggle: www.google.com Click on the News tab at the top of the screen. When that screen comes up scroll down a bit and on the left-hand side of the screen will be a link to News Alert. Click on that and follow the directions. Oh... one more very important note. With this as with anything else out there on the web make sure you read all the policies, terms of service, privacy statements, etc. That way you can make an informed decision about participating. Hope you find it helpful. Take care - Emma
Good Evening Everyone, I have another great site for you to try. You can make this site one of your bookmarks. It is a rootweb site. Type in the name of the city and it will give you state and county. http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi Very easy to use and handy to keep around...<g>. Take care - Emma
Good Evening Everyone, I thought you might enjoy trying another new site. The URL is: http://www.genealogyinc.com/maps/uscm.htm This site has census maps for most of the eastern part of the US. You can see how the county lines changed from one census year to another. As with many sites you will also find ads and links to for fee sites but the maps are available free. Hope you enjoy them and have a great weekend. Emma
Good Morning Everyone, Just thought you might like a update on the list. At the present time there are 14 subscribers to the regular version and 6 subscribers to the digest version of the mail list. I hope all is well with each of you. With the interest these days in controlling spam (both individually, through your ISP's, and through the use of special software) there have been some challenges in various systems (rootsweb, various ISPs, etc). So I thought I would send this reminder. If you are interested in finding out other rootsweb mail lists that might be of interest then go to this URL. http://lists.rootsweb.com/ AND... finally.... if you have any questions concerning any list you might be on you can contact the list admin but sending a message to: [email protected] For example, for this list the address would be: [email protected] The message will be forwarded to that admin. Hope this helps a bit. Take care - Emma
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BK2.2ACEB/81.2.1 Message Board Post: My Grandfather August Mundt (1861-1917) came from Prussia and wound up in Milwaukee. He married Clara Joha (1859-1913)in Milwaukee in 1885. I am not sure when he immigrated, but he was in Milwaukee before he married. His father's name was Ernest Mundt and his mother's name was Charlotte M. (?) I doubt if he is related closely if at all to the Mundts being discussed in this exchange of information, but if anyone has any information on this family, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Hi there, I don't think there's a connection--I sure wish that there was. I know that Gustav emigrated to the US around 1912. I'm doing this off the top of my head, so don't hold me to the details. I know he did come from Czarist Russia. He served in the czar's army. His father was Gotlieb. I have found some records that connect him with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia. So I don't think we have the same Mundts. I don't know about you, but I've been surprised at the amount of Mundts in the US. Sorry I wasn't much help, Robin [email protected] wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Good Afternoon Everyone, Well... here we are... one week before Christmas. So I imagine this will be the last list update for the year 2003. First of all, some updated information about the list. As of today, the Mundt list has 14 subscribers to the regular version and 5 subscribers to the digest version. I am sure that all of you are busy getting ready for Christmas but.... you might enjoy giving this site a try when you have time. It is a Surname Thesaurus and will create a list of additional spellings for various surnames. Just type in your surname of interest and then look at all the other suggested spellings. Some are quite creative. http://www.imagepartners.co.uk/Thesaurus/Search.aspx And.. as a year end comment. As we each work on our various lines, we sometimes get caught up in finding names, dates, and locations. Maybe here at Christmas time we might want to pause and remember that those names and dates were real people. All of whom impacted our lives in some way. That makes each and every one of them special to us and our children. AND.... finally..... I would like to wish each of you the best of the season and hope that you and your families are able to share lots of wonderful laughter, hugs, and memories with each other. Merry Christmas, Emma Cronin List Admin "When I set out to find my ancestors I met many people of all ages and from many walks of life, engaged on a similar quest. Although my search was in the past, I found fellowship and friendship in the present; may you be as fortunate. George Pelling - British Genealogist
Good Evening Everyone, Just thought you might like a update on the list. At the present time there are 14 subscribers to the regular version and 5 subscribers to the digest version of the mail list. I would like to ask all of you to encourage others to join the list. The more folks we have the better chance we have of sharing information. The last few weeks there have been some challenges in various systems (rootsweb, various ISPs, etc) so I thought I would send these addresses for you to have now and in the future. You will then get a screen and can search the messages by year. If you are interested in finding out other rootsweb mail lists that might be of interest then go to this URL. http://lists.rootsweb.com/ And... finally.... census records. If you are hunting transcriptions of census records then try these 3 sites: This one has links for each state and then county: http://www.census-online.com/links/index.html Then there are two sites run by USGenWeb volunteers. Here is the address for one of them: http://www.us-census.org/ And here is the address for the other: http://www.rootsweb.com/~census/ Hope this helps a bit. Take care - Emma
Good Afternoon Everyone, It has been a while since I send an "informational" message. Please accept my apologies. Since census records are so important to all of us I thought you might like to take a look at these sites that contain links to census transcriptions. USGenWeb Census Project www.rootsweb.com/~census This will get you to the main project page and you can then select to see the lists of transcriptions. Follow the links to the state listings. USGenWeb Census Project Yep.... there are two of them. Each contains different transcriptions. www.USGenNet.org Scroll down under "Private Domain Websites Hosted by USGenNet" click on USGenWeb Census Project Follow the links to the state listings. Or.... you can access both of these sites by going to: www.usgenweb.org Scroll down to Census Projects You will find a link to both of the above sites. And finally this one: www.census-online.com/links/index.html Provides links to on-line census records by state. Hope some of you enjoy using some of these sites. If you have any others please share them with the list as well. Thanks and take care - Emma
Good Afternoon Everyone, Just thought I would send an update on the status of the list. At the present time there are 13 subscribers to the regular list and 5 to the digest version. How about a quick roll call to let others know which Mundt folks you are seeking. That way we can keep any eye out for information that might help others. Please include dates and locations if possible. I have temporarily changed the configuration of the list to moderate any sub requests. This means that I will have to approve anyone attempting to subscribe. This is not what I want to do because the goal is certainly to encourage subscriptions. But, because of a temporary concern with a spammer who is hitting the rootsweb lists I am doing this in an effort to protect the list from this spammer. As soon as the concern is dealt with I will return the list to regular subscriptions. AND... finally, what will sound like a very strange request in light of the current situation...<grin>, but, please encourage those you know working on this surname to join the list. The more folks we have the more we can share. Take care and I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend. Emma
