Hello Everyone, I thought it might be time for a list update. At the present time there are 14 subscribers to the regular version of the list and 5 subscribers to the digest version. As I am sure most of you already know Rootsweb has thousands of mail lists for all localities and surnames. So, I thought this might be a good time to talk about what is involved in posting an effective message for mail lists. First of all, to post a message to any Rootsweb mail list you have to be a subscriber. You can find a list of available mail lists by going to the main rootsmail web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/. To make your post more effective make sure you do the following: 1. Make sure your post is appropriate for that list or in other words post to the appropriate mail list. A request for information on John Smith in Tennessee is going to be a lot more effective if posted on the Smith or Tennessee mail list than it is on the Jones mail list. That may seem obvious but you have no idea how often that happens...<grin>. 2. Make sure the subject of your message reflects the contents of your message. A subject like "Hunting for my grandfather" or "Seeking family information" isn't going to get the same readership as "John Smith - Rutherford Co., Tn" or "Jane Doe - b. 1813 Ky". 3. Include who, when, and where in your message if at all possible. There are a lot of Henry Jones or John Jenkins folks out there and if you don't explain which one you are hunting you are less likely to get a response. 4. Don't post off topic messages. If you have any doubt then contact the list admin. 5. if you have any questions or concerns always contact the list admin. You can contact any list admin by sending a message to [email protected] For example, [email protected] 6. As you meet others working on the same surnames invite them to join the various lists. The more people working on a surname the more sharing there can be. 7. AND.... remember, if you don't try you won't get anywhere So....the way to make contacts is to post your information.....hint.... hint.....<grin>. Hope this helps. Take care and have a great day. Emma

Good Morning Everyone, I am sure that all of you are aware by now that the Rootsweb mail server had problems this past weekend. No mail was delivered at all for a couple of days. I would imagine also that your mail box now tells you that the problem has been fixed and that mail is now coming through...<g>. Sometimes I can alert you to problems with the lists but in some cases I can't. This was one of those cases. So.... here are a couple of URL's for you to use when mail isn't coming through at all. Bookmark these addresses and save them to use in the future. First.... the help desk site: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com If you aren't receiving mail from rootsweb mail lists check this site. Rootsweb staff will post information concerning any problems with the lists. It is usually posted in yellow. They will also update the information as the situation continues so if it goes on for very long you might want to check for additional information. Secondly.... password central: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ You can go to this site and request a "list" of mail lists that you are subscribed to. AND... finally... if you aren't receiving mail from rootsweb lists please don't send "test" messages to the list. That just means that when the problem is solved and rootsweb starts sending out mail that has been qued everyone gets a bunch of messages called "test"....<g>. Instead, check with password central to make sure you are subscribed OR drop me an e-mail and let me know you are having problems OR compose a query and send that to the list. Who knows, that must might be the magic query that gets you some response....<g>. Hope all this helps and most of all, I hope all of you have a wonderful day. Take care - Emma

Good Morning Everyone and... My apologies to all of you............. I received an extra Christmas surprise this year. My computer died - big time. The motherboard decided it simply had enough. As a result, I now have a new computer. That was the easy part. The hard part was trying to save and move over all the data from the old hard drive. Something we still have yet to accomplish. So..... I have lost lots of e-mails and lots of information stored on that hard drive. Therefore, if you have asked me a question, sent me some information, or are waiting for a response from me on something please, please send it again. One of the most discouraging thing is that I had searched out lots of obits and was holding those to send after the first of the year. I figured folks were too busy before Christmas. Those are all lost...... <sigh>. So I guess I get to start searching again.....<g>. Again, my apologies and pease bear with me while I try to recover. Take care and have a wonderful new year. Emma
Morning Everyone, Well.... in a few days we will all be enjoying Christmas in our own way. I do hope all of you have a wonderful holiday. However, before the holidays hit I would like to visit about a couple of things. First of all - the busy holiday season often makes it harder for us to keep up with our e-mail. Sometimes mail boxes get full and messages begin to bounce. I am starting to see some of that already on the various lists I admin. So you might want to keep a check on your mail boxes just in case. Also.... something called challenge software. This type of software is used by folks in attempt to decrease spam. It works well for them but often doesn't work well with mail lists. There are several different titles of this software out there - SpamCop, QuickCop, etc. I just received one from SpamCop. Basically the idea is that you have just tried to send a message to someone using their service. For that message and future messages to go through you have to respond to that SpamCop e-mail and verify who you are, etc. Then, future messages you send to that person will go through. Problem is - this e-mail that I received did not tell me the e-mail of the person using SpamCop. So there is no way I can track that to a list subscriber (or a friend for that matter). It also means that I don't know who I am responding to and therefore am not given the choice of whether or not I want my address on their "approved list" or not. List admins tend to see a lot of this. So... bottom line is that I don't respond to those type of messages. If you are planning on using this type of software then please make sure you configure it correctly to receive mail from the mail lists. Thanks for listening to my muttering...<g> and again, I hope each of you have a wonderful holiday. This holiday more than any other often brings us the chance to visit with family and I hope that each of you has that opportunity. Take care and travel safely to and from your holiday destinations. Good Evening Everyone, Christmas is rapidly approaching and I am sure that all of you are very busy getting ready. Genealogy is much more than just names, dates and places. It is also stories handed down from one generation to another. It is those memories that add the real "meat" to our family histories. The Christmas memories you make this year will be very precious in the years to come just as memories from the past are important now. So.... how about pausing a few moments in the next few days and sharing some of your favorite Christmas memories or Christmas traditions with all of us. Please use the subject of Christmas Memory or Christmas Tradition so that those who might not want to participate can identify and delete if they desire. To start it off, here is my memory...... My family and "Christmas Gift" tradition. I am not sure of the history of this one. I did try to "surf" a bit and see if I could find anything but no luck. But... the idea was to be the first person to wish the other person "Christmas Gift". If you were the first then the other person was supposed to give you something. Now... that usually didn't happen - the gift that is...<g>. But it was fun to try to be the first. People would even greet folks that way in the grocery store, post office, on the street, etc. But in my family we carried it a bit farther. My brother was two years younger than I. He also had a brain tumor and was blind. He died when he was 9 years old. But.. he loved the "Christmas Gift" tradition. So much so that we expanded it to "Christmas Eve Gift". On Christmas Eve morning he would get on the phone and call our relatives. They would answer the phone and he would yell - "Christmas Eve Gift". Of course they would all respond - Oh.... you got me, etc. Then one Christmas Eve our Aunt Louise did something different and turned the tables on him. Instead of answering the phone with the usual "hello", she answered with her own - "Christmas Eve Gift". Johnny Boy held the phone out to my mother and said...... "She got me, She got me..... She didn't do it right".....LOL. One explanation about the phone. We lived in a very small town and this was in the 50's. We still had "phone operators" and you picked up the phone and told them what number you wanted. They would then connect you. The phone was very important to Johnny Boy and he really enjoyed calling people. The phone was in the kitchen and mother put a little stool there. Johnny Boy would sit on that stool while mother worked in the kitchen and he would talk on the phone. He and the phone operators became very good friends. He and my mother would deliver the phone operators little surprises to the phone company office. He would also do the "Christmas Eve Gift" greeting to the phone operators. As his tumor progressed and as he became more and more ill the operators kept up with him. They would call and check on him. The night he died Mother picked up the phone to call some of our relatives and friends. The phone operators came on and told her.... not to worry. They were taking care of all of that for her. It was late at night. But those ladies took care of all the calls for us. My favorite picture of Johnny Boy was taken on Christmas Eve. He is sitting on his stool - in his pajamas - he has his legs crossed and he is on the phone making his "Christmas Eve Gift" calls....<grin>. Johnny Boy died in 1957 but we still do "Christmas Eve Gift". As they came along, my children and my cousin's children would make their Christmas Eve calls. And now their children are following that same tradition. Now... I am looking forward to hearing about some of your Christmas memories and traditions. I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday. Take care - Emma

Hi Everyone, Now... that everyone knows about the mail lists and the message boards, I thought you might like to look at some of these sites. There are several organized groups working to put genealogy data on the internet free. This might be census transcriptions or cemetery transcriptions or marriage records or wills or whatever. First of all, am betting that many of you already know about USGenWeb. Here is the URL to the mail USGenWeb site. From this page you can select a state and then county. In many cases the state pages will also include state wide projects. http://www.usgenweb.org/ ......................................... Also associated loosely with the USGenWeb project is the USGenWeb Archives project. Use this URL to get to the archives site. Again, you can select a state and then a county. It is important to note that the county USGenWeb sites and the county USGenWeb Archives site do NOT necessarily have the same data. Nor does a search of one get you information from both sites. So make sure you check both. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ .................................................. Other groups working to provide free genealogy data can be found at this site: http://www.usgennet.org/ This is the main page for USGenNet. Scroll down to the Private Domain Websites and check out the American History and Genealogy Project, the American Local History Network, and the USGenWeb Census Project. Note: the USGenWeb Census Project listed here is different from the one that you will get on the USGenWeb Archives Site page listed earlier in this message. So make sure you check both. And finally, this URL will take you to a search site that searches all the USGenNet data. http://www.usgennet.org/search/ Take some time to play around with all of these. You will be surprised at the amount of information out there for your use. All placed there by very nice volunteers who are kind enough to transcribe all this material for the rest of us. Hope you enjoy all these sites. Perhaps some of you can share other sites as well. Take care - Emma
Good Evening Everyone, A subscriber on one of the lists I admin asked a question about mail lists and message boards and the difference between them. So I thought that might be a good message for everyone. MAIL LISTS: The fact that you can receive this message means that you have chosen to subscribe to the Mundt mail list. To post to the list you must be a subscriber. Any message you send is automatically sent to every subscriber on the list and in turn, you will receive any message sent to the list by any other subscriber. RootsWeb has just under 30,000 different mail lists for states, counties, regions, surnames, special topics, etc. So you have a lot to choose from....<g> The messages are sent in two ways. Regular subscription which means that you get each message immediately as it is posted. Digest version which means that the messages are batched and sent out periodically. If you are interested in finding out other rootsweb mail lists that might be of interest then go to this URL. http://lists.rootsweb.com/ If you are interested in finding out what lists you subscribe to you can check your subscriptions by going to password central and asking for that list. The URL is: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ All messages sent to the mail lists are archived. You can look at these archives in two ways. If you think you have missed some postings to any of the mail lists or if you just need to review past postings then check the archives for that mail list. Go to this URL and enter the name of the mail list. You can then look at the messages to the list by month. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Access to this site is not restricted to subscribers. This means you can check the archives for other lists as well. You can also search past messages for any mail list by going to this URL: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl First enter the name of the list you want to search. You will then get a screen and can search the messages by year. AND... finally.... if you have any questions concerning any mail list you might be on you can contact the list admin by sending a message to: [email protected] Replace the word - listname - with the name of the specific mail list. For example: [email protected] The message will be forwarded to that admin. MESSAGE BOARDS Message boards differ from mail lists in that you do not have to be a subscriber to that specific board. Nor are new postings automatically sent to your e-mail address. To read any new postings to the message board you must go to that message board site. You must also go to the board site to respond to any posting. Postings are retained for years and can be searched in various ways. You can access the message boards from the mail RootsWeb page. You will find a link there that will lead you to this site. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw Once there you can search for a specific board. Make sure you take time to read the Message Board Rules and Message Board FAQ. Links to these are at the bottom of the page. Both provide helpful information in use of the message boards. You can also access the same message boards from the mail Ancestry site - http://www.ancestry.com/. At the top of the page click on "Message Boards" You will be taken to this site: http://www.ancestry.com/share/ Once there you can search for a specific board. Both mail lists and message boards have admins. In many cases the same admin has both the list and the board. In other cases, there are two different admins. LINK BETWEEN MESSAGE BOARDS AND MAIL LISTS: Some message boards are linked to their corresponding mail lists via a gateway. (Note: Not all mail lists have a corresponding board) In that case, any posting on the message board is automatically sent to the mail list and received by all subscribers. There are advantages and disadvantages to gatewaying and I won't go into that now but watch your mail list messages for the notation that the message has been forwarded from the board. To respond to that message, you must go to the URL listed in that message. A response sent back to the mail list will not reach the original poster. Note that the gateway does not go both ways. Messages posted on the board are sent to the mail list - messages posted on the mail list are NOT sent to the board. Hope all this helps. If you have any questions give me a yell. Take care - Emma

Good Evening Everyone, I hope all of you are having a wonderful Fall. I don't know about all of you but I am definitely looking forward to cooler weather. Living in Texas will do that to you. I thought it was time for a list update. At the present time there are 16 subscribers to the regular or L version of the list and 6 subscribers to the digest or D version. I also wanted to let you know about RootsWeb Review. If you are not yet a subscriber to this newsletter you might want to consider doing so. This is a free newsletter sent to your e-mail by RootsWeb. The information on the RootsWeb Review site describes the newsletter this way: "Each issue of the RootsWeb Review newsletter includes information about additions and/or changes to RootsWeb.com (such as new databases, mailing lists, and websites), plus tips on using RootsWeb.com, genealogical research, humor, readers' stories and tips, and other articles of interest to family historians around the world." I think you will find the articles helpful and interesting. Some of the past articles you might want to check are those providing helpful hints on writing effective queries, the best way to use mail lists and message boards, and effective search strategies. Go to this site to search or browse past issues. http://rwr.rootsweb.com/ If interested in subscribing then click on: Newsletter Management Center And one last note - no, make that a last directive....<grin>.
