She was born in Westerly, R.I., on Sept. 13, 1909. She traveled with her family to Finland at an early age. Her father had been employed in America for several years but took the family back to Finland because his wife was seriously ill. Lillian returned to America with her sisters when she was in her late teens. She lived in Gilbert, Minn., where she later married and moved to Butte. There a son was born to Lillian and her husband Jalmar Mattson. Lillian remarried in 1939 after a divorce from her first husband. She was married for 60 years to Felix Kittila, they had a son, Lee Arnold Kittila. Lillian and her husband Felix lived in Butte and Seattle during World War II. They returned to Butte and in later years lived at Georgetown Lake, Philipsburg, Stevensville, Hamilton and San Leandro, Calif. They returned to Montana and settled in Hamilton and Corvallis in their retirement years. She helped her husband build or remodel homes in all these cities. She worked very hard helping on these homes and she loved them all. She loved gardens and flowers and left each home with a beautiful yard. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and the coffee pot was always on. She crocheted afghans for all her family, knitted stockings and wool mitts for all, and her embroidery can be found in each home. She baked bread and sweet rolls and fresh apple pie at the blink of an eye. She canned huckleberries, trout and applesauce, made pickles and spiced red beets from her gardens. Her houseplants seemed to thrive with her care. She loved all animals large and small and always kept a cat. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Felix; a son, Lee; her sisters, Mary and Jenny; and dear friend, Impe Raisanen. She is survived by her son Leo and daughter-in-law Catherine Mattson of Florence; her grandchildren, Debra Mattson Phillips, her husband John and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Mason, all of Sammamish, Wash., Mark Mattson of Puyallup, Wash., and Lisa Jackson and her husband Nick of Antioch, Calif.; and brothers and cousins in Finland. She is also survived by many friends in Corvallis, Hamilton and Butte. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton, with the Rev.
