It's been quite a while since I posted my interests. I'd like to hear from anyone researching these names, or researching Irish in the same localities. The Bulger and Hanratty families went to Butte 1885-1895 from Norton Creek, Quebec, where they'd settled around 1825. The Byrne and O'Reilly families came to New York in 1854, went to the Comstock Lode about about 1865-1869, and to Butte in 1895. Maggie Byrne married Peter M. Holmes. Mary Byrne married John Joseph O'Reilly. I believe their brothers Ned Byrne and John Byrne also went to Butte. John Mooney and Mary Clark went from Ireland to Canada and settled in Scranton, PA by 1850. Several of their children went to Butte around 1885, including Maggie Mooney Kellett, Mary Mooney Pryor, and Sarah Mooney Sherman. There were some Mooney brothers also in Butte. Around 1920 some of this family went to WA state where they ran Mooney's Bar & Grill (Tacoma) and Mooney's Tavern near the Puyallup junction. Daniel McCarthy and Catherine O'Neill immigrated from County Cork to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1864. Several of their children came to Butte around 1895. My brick walls: I'm looking for two Sullivan families - Daniel Sullivan and wife Margaret (McCarthy) came to Butte around 1895 with four children, Mamie, Margaret, Daniel, and Emmett. Mamie and Margaret were schoolteachers and Emmett was a timekeeper. Mary McCarthy bo 1844 in County Cork, married there to Michael O'Sullivan. One daughter born in Cork, another born in CT, and then this family moved to Houghton County, MI. The names I have for their daughters are: Nora Theriault, Tillie LaPage, Kate Dube, and Mary Smith. I am not sure if these girls stayed in MI or came to Butte. Kathleen.
Descendants of Michael David O'Connell Generation No. 1 1. MICHAEL DAVID2 O'CONNELL (TIMOTHY1) was born November 09, 1872 in Rossie, New York, and died April 16, 1952 in Butte, Silver-Bow County, Montana. He married MARY ALICE LYNCH in Butte, Montana, daughter of PATRICK LYNCH and MARY LYNCH. She was born 1875 in Austin, Nevada, and died Unknown in Butte, Silver-Bow County, Montana. Notes for MICHAEL DAVID O'CONNELL: Following are data Michael David O'CONNELL, Jr., told to Madeleine O'Connell-Willson, in 1991: GRANDFATHER MICHAEL DAVID O'CONNELL was born November 9, 1872 at Rossie, New York. At the age of 22, he came to Montana. He married Mary (Mame) Lynch, and they had eight children: Mary, Frank, Ann, Margaret, Helen, Elizabeth, Frank, Lee, and Michael. M.D., Sr., died April 16, 1952, of a stroke, at the age of 79. Mame died November 3, 1951. They are buried in Butte. In 1894, when M.D., Sr., was 22 years old, he and Frank came to Montana and worked for a while mining in Whitehall. Frank eventually went to Bishop, California, where he worked in the plumbing department of the Vanadium Mines. Frank never married, and, later, Frank returned to New York, where he died and is buried in Rossie. Michael came to Butte and worked in the Butte mines. One day Michael worked very hard, as was his habit, while a companion spent most of the time "resting". A foreman unjustly criticized Michael for the little accomplished. "That does it," Michael explained. "I'll never work for anyone again. Michael quit the mines and went into building contracting on his own as "O'CONNELL Construction Company". The construction company continued until M.D.'s son, Mike, Jr., returned to Butte after WWII and went into business with his father. M.D., Jr., finally retired and closed the business in 1988. Dad says that his father had also picked up experience working for the ACM Company on the top deck of the smelter in Anaconda, 300 feet in the air. "He never wanted to work underneath anybody!" M.D. Sr. had a life long interest in politics. Around 1916, for many years, Michael was head of the Butte City Council and acting mayor when the Mayor was not in town. In the 1940's Michael was elected Democratic State Representative to the Montana State Legislature, where he was reelected and continued for six years. In 1948, M.D.,Sr., was chosen State Democratic Representative to the national Democratic convention in New York. Dad still has the rosary his father brought back from St. Anne de Beaupre. This was Michael's last trip. In 1952, M.D., Sr., died of a stroke or heart attack. Margaret Gollaher remembers M.D., Sr., as a brilliant man and great talker with a lot of ideas he wanted to try. Margaret Gollaher and her mother, Nellie, also remembered and loved Mike's wife, Mame. Margaret remembers Mame as a physically beautiful woman very gracious, kind and friendly. Mike and Mame had eight children: Written By Madeleine O'Connell-Wilson 1991 More About MICHAEL DAVID O'CONNELL: Burial: Hollycross, Butte MT Notes for MARY ALICE LYNCH: Children of MICHAEL O'CONNELL and MARY LYNCH are: 2. i. Hedy kept the books for their contracting business, while Mike figured and oversaw the actual building. Hedy and Mike have also worked together for almost their whole life on their mutual hobby theater. For a few years, after obtaining a degree from Pasadena Playhouse in California, Mike acted professionally in movies, including Evil Knievel (he is the "extra" at the bar speaking with an Irish brogue), and including the Hallmark Series on TV. Hedy also had acting engagements, once taking a part of Marian Ross, of Happy Day's fame. Dad said, as his family grew, he found it necessary to change the "stars in his eyes" for "dollar signs", and so semi retired from acting to contracting. Mike and Hedy remain in Butte, now retired also from construction, and they find satisfaction in contributing to school and community theatrical productions. They will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on May 29, 1993. Hedy and Mike are presently lending their experience to assist their parish in building a church. Descendants of Patrick Lynch Generation No. 1 1. PATRICK LYNCH died April 26, 1899 in Butte, Silver-Bow County, Montana. He married MARY C.Kelly. She was born August 26, 1841, and died November 30, 1910 in Butte, Silver-Bow County, Montana. Notes for PATRICK LYNCH: Following are data Michael David O'CONNELL, Jr., told to Madeleine, in 1991, regarding the Lynch family. The Lynch family, of Irish descent, moved from Nevada to Butte. Great Grandfather Patrick Lynch worked in the mines at Butte. Uncle Hugh Lynch was a very nice gentleman, a mail carrier, and M.D., Jr., knew Hugh, but doesn't remember any of Hugh's children: Pat, Jim, Margaret and Mame. Hugh's brother, Pat Lynch, was caught embezzling at the bank, and went to Texas. As far as M.D., Jr. knows, there are no members of the Lynch family left here in Butte. M.D. Jr. tried to look up his mother's birth certificate in Austin, Nevada, but the records had been transferred to Carson City. He did find, at the Austin courthouse, some property, belonging to his mother, purchased by Patrick and Mary. Dad never knew his mother's parents. They were dead before he was born. Mary Alice's mother was alive when she was married, but her father had already died. Both Mame's parents are buried in Butte. Mike does remember his uncle, Henry Crangle, a serious person to a young child, who married his mother's sister, Margaret. They had five children: Agnes, Isabel, Eloise, Mary, and Bob. Agnes and Isabel, were spinsters. Eloise married Emmett Dolan, but they had no children. Mary Crangle McConnell is Kay McConnell's child, who has no children. Bob Crangle is father of Julieta Crangle Tarver who lives in Seattle with her husband Frank Tarver and three step children.
