My Grandparents were Michael Kelly and Ellen o'Shea nearly all their brothers in sisters emigrated to Butte, Montana from Cahirkeem, Eyeries, Cork, Ireland. They were on the Kelly side Mary (1864) John(1866) Nora(1869) who also lived in Rhode Island where my Granfather stayed with while working in the US, Margaret(1871) Johanna(1874) Cornelius(1876) and Ellen(1879). On the Shea side they were John(1878), Margaret(1881) Nora(1883) Jermiah(1887) Catherine(1889), John(1866) Nora(1869), Mary(1890), Patrick(1892) Daniel(1895) Den(1897) and Jimmy who died in 1972. I would like to contact any of their ancestors to find out what life was like in Butte for them. Kind Regards Mike
Before we "close" the list, I would like to share a URL for hymns that an organist friend of mine sent me. I have shared it with my genealogy "friends" in MO and AR and it was much appreciated. I hope, even just one person on the list will get some comfort from some of the old hymns listed. This one listed under "GRIEF" has helped me find some kind of peace in my own life. I play and sing along with it often............ http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/t/e/tellitto.htm The direct URL for a list of music is: http://www.cyberhymnal.org/top/topics.htm OR: This is the original site where I found the URL for the music way down near the bottom under Cyber Hymnal. http://www.bibles.net PS: My youngest sister and husband are still stranded in Brazil where they flew for a Church/Youth sponsored meeting. They probably will not be able to fly back to the US for at least a week. They are safe! Thank you Kathleen for allowing this type of information on the genealogy list. After all, this terrible time IS a part of our "heritage" now, as was the Civil War, World War I and all the rest.......................
I am trying to determine is Dan and John SEXTON are still in Butte on the 1910 census. Is there anyone that can tell me if there is a census index that can be searched or a phone directory search that would tell me if they are still there? I wanted to be sure of my info before I stuck in my two cents worth, but I can't find my notes. So here goes anyway until someone has more to add. I was in Butte a couple of weeks ago and stopped at St. Patrick's. If you write the Butte Catholic Community--North, 102 S. Washington St., Butte, 59701, and ask for information, they will try to help for a donation. Also, it make take a while since other business takes precedence. You really need dates, or at least a particular year for most info. The marriage & birth ledgers I was shown were by year and they really need a specific date to look up deaths. No information is available before 1875 (I think that's the year). I'm not sure about whether or not they have records for all Catholic churches in Butte, although I received some info from records of a couple of other churches. You would have to ask when you write. The Butte Historical Society has lots of info, but I'm not sure about the address or policy on research since I didn't go there. I was told at the Diocese office that the Historical Society has a lot of information that would help with obtaining more to use when requesting church info. For instance, it's possible to obtain a death date at the Historical Society. I hope I'm remembering all this correctly and that it helps. While I was in Butte, I went to the cemetery and the man in charge shared what they had. All records for both Holy Cross cemetery & St. Patrick's cemetery are kept at the Holy Cross cemetery office. I'm not sure of that address. And I don't know what their policy is for look-up requests by mail. I might have just "lucked out", but he was able to give me directions to gravesites. Once I got to them, there weren't always stones, however. Actually, he only had location of the grave, name, date of death, and undertaker, but that can sometimes be a big help. Good luck. Kay
Tom, I am hoping someone will answer this on the list. I also would like the information you are requesting. Thanks for posing the question to the list. Hi, I have been doing some research on my maternal great-great-grandfather, Charles BARKER. Tradition has it that he was a Prospector or Miner in the early 1860's in the Butte area. I know that he left either late in 1863 or early in 1864, as that is when he met and married my great-great-grandmother. Does anyone know of newspapers or tax records or any other records that might have information about some of the people "passing through" Butte at that time as prospectors or miners? Thank you, Carol Newey cjnewey@home.com

Hello, I am new to your list. I have just found out that someone in my family file may have lived in Butte, Montana. From a Obit, I know that a Charity OSBURN BERRYHILL was living in Butte in 1928. She was married at one time to John BERRYHILL of Ohio. As both Charity and John were born about 1839, John may have died before 1928 and it is possible that Charity remarried. John and Charity married in Ohio in 1866 so if they moved to Montana together it would have been after that date. Thanks for any help, I am glad to share any information I have, Kathy in Michigan

I recently found some of my ancestors on the 1900 census as follows: Living in South Butte Twp: Sexton Jno, born Feb 1860, married 7 years, born Minnesota, occ: Grocery Clerk wife, Anne (or Annie), born June 1867, born Wisc., 4 children 3 still living HM, Daughter, born Jan 1895 Minn. Ellen, dau, born June 1896 Minn. John Wm., born May 1898 Montana Living in Silver Bow Twp: Sexton, Dan, born sept. 1866 Minn, married 6 years, Grocery Man wife, Louise born May 1870 Michigan, no children I know Daniel eventually went to Alaska and then ended up in Seattle where he died. I have no idea what happened to John but believe he died before 1912 - but I don't know where. Would the Archdiocese have church records on them? Are there civil records for birth/death information around this time? Does anyone have any books/resources that they should check for these families in?
