    1. info on northern Italian community?
    2. Bev A Laird
    3. I was wondering if anyone has information on the Northern Italian mining communities that lived in Butte and Walkerville in the early 1900's? I'm looking for written books or article or websites, and also the general regions or towns in Italy from whence the immigrants came. I would also be interested in contacting anyone else with ancestral ties to Northern Italy via Butte/Walkerville. I have noticed in early census records that there were many Italian families that lived nearby each other. Thank you, Bev Laird (related to Stagnoli family of Butte) . ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! She was born in Westerly, R.I., on Sept. 13, 1909. She traveled with her family to Finland at an early age. Her father had been employed in America for several years but took the family back to Finland because his wife was seriously ill. Lillian returned to America with her sisters when she was in her late teens. She lived in Gilbert, Minn., where she later married and moved to Butte. There a son was born to Lillian and her husband Jalmar Mattson. Lillian remarried in 1939 after a divorce from her first husband. She was married for 60 years to Felix Kittila, they had a son, Lee Arnold Kittila. Lillian and her husband Felix lived in Butte and Seattle during World War II. They returned to Butte and in later years lived at Georgetown Lake, Philipsburg, Stevensville, Hamilton and San Leandro, Calif. They returned to Montana and settled in Hamilton and Corvallis in their retirement years. She helped her husband build or remodel homes in all these cities. She worked very hard helping on these homes and she loved them all. She loved gardens and flowers and left each home with a beautiful yard. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and the coffee pot was always on. She crocheted afghans for all her family, knitted stockings and wool mitts for all, and her embroidery can be found in each home. She baked bread and sweet rolls and fresh apple pie at the blink of an eye. She canned huckleberries, trout and applesauce, made pickles and spiced red beets from her gardens. Her houseplants seemed to thrive with her care. She loved all animals large and small and always kept a cat. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Felix; a son, Lee; her sisters, Mary and Jenny; and dear friend, Impe Raisanen. She is survived by her son Leo and daughter-in-law Catherine Mattson of Florence; her grandchildren, Debra Mattson Phillips, her husband John and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Mason, all of Sammamish, Wash., Mark Mattson of Puyallup, Wash., and Lisa Jackson and her husband Nick of Antioch, Calif.; and brothers and cousins in Finland. She is also survived by many friends in Corvallis, Hamilton and Butte. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton, with the Rev. Stephen VanGilder officiating. A graveside urn placement will take place at Mountainview Cemetery in Butte in the spring. ________________________________ From the March 10, 1999 online edition of the "Missoulian.com" FELIX KITTILA CORVALLIS - Felix Kittila, 87, of Corvallis died Tuesday, March 2, at Community Medical Center in Missoula. Survivors include his wife, Lillian of Corvallis; son, Leo and Catherine Mattson of Florence; granddaughters, Debra and John Phillips of Seattle; Lisa and Nick Jackson of San Leandro, Calif.; and grandson, Mark Mattson of Seattle. Felix was preceded in death by a son Lee Kittila. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton, with the Rev. Mike DeLancy officiating. Urn placement will be at a later date at the Mountainview Cemetery in Butte. 1. THE BUTTE ARCHIVES & RESEARCH FEES
    2. Andrews, Suzanne
    3. Dear List Members, I am responding to the comment about the Butte Archives being "very expensive." I don't necessarily agree. I think that it depends on what you ask of the Archives. I believe the Archives research fee is still $15.00--which is much more reasonable than if you were to hire a local genealogist or researcher to research for you--and a lot less expensive than if you were to travel to Butte to do your own research. The Archives charges an additional fee for making copies. The copy fees differ because of the large binders that they have to copy from. These binders are old and fragile, and each time they take them off the shelf, open them, and then put them on a copy machine, it causes a little more "wear & tear". It is expensive to have these binders repaired, so I don't feel that their charges for copies are unreasonable. I think preservation of these old records and newspapers is a valuable service that they provide. Regarding their research fee, if you ask them to look in the cemetery index for a name and they charge $15 just to do that, then yes, I would say that was expensive; however, I don't believe that is the way they charge. Ellen Crain has assured me on several occasions that they are reasonable in charging for their services. If they don't find anything--they don't charge. But if you ask them to search their records, go to the courthouse and get copies of birth, death, or marriage certificates, and mail the information to you, then I think the $15.00 fee is very reasonable. I would not hesitate to recommend the Archives for research--I do it all the time. I have had many people tell me that they were so pleased with the information that they received. If you have concerns about their fees, then I would recommend that you ask up front what the charges will be for what you want done--then you have a choice of whether or not to have them do your research. I'm sure you would check the price before you buy an item, correct? It's the same with research--ask what it will cost. By copy of this e-mail, I am inviting Ellen at the Archives to respond to this if she has any additional information, or if I have unknowingly made any false statements, she should correct them. It would be great if someone on this list who is in Butte would have the time to do lookups. I haven't been able to find anyone that has the time or is willing to do this voluntarily. There have been a couple of people in the past who have done this, but it is time consuming and eventually they either got tired of it or had more important things to take care of. Hey, if there is anyone out there that would be interested in volunteering to do lookups in Butte, I would be happy to hear from you. I don't have time to do very many, and my work hours coincide with the work hours of the Archives so I don't make it over there very often. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suzanne Andrews MTGen Web County Coordinator for Butte-Silver Bow, Anaconda-DeerLodge, & Powell Counties http://www.mtech.edu/silverbow ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: wimzi@in-tch.com [mailto:wimzi@in-tch.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 12:34 PM To: MTSILVER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Rachel or Leah Witofsky This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. For ten dollars they will research and tell you what is there. Good luck. Nancy
