Missoula, July 20. --- Joseph D. Allen, deputy sheriff here, has received word from a buddy of his son that Staff Sgt. Harry J. Allen, AAF, was killed when his Liberator bomber crashed in a raid over Germany April 4. T/Sgt. Charles Cupp, the only surviving member of this crew, wrote that the plane ran into a barrage between Hamburg and Berlin and was literally shot in two. The crew baled out, but only Cupp got down safely. Sergeant Allen had been shot down twice before. Cupp was taken to a Nazi prison camp and it was only after his liberation that he was able to communicate with the relatives of other members of the Liberator crew. Surviving besides Sergeant Allen's father is a brother, Staff Sgt. William Allen, with the army in Europe. Sgt. Harry Allen attended school here and was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier school. He entered the AAF in December, 1943. ------------------------ The transcription of this death notice is provided as a courtesy only.
