I am a descendant of William Nelson, son of Wm J. Yourex. After a random search for this unique name. I found him listed on a census form of 1870 and a Michigan park monument dedicated to civil war veterans. Continuing my search I found that he had applied for a pension, although there was a two year discrepancy in date of birth. I got lucky with a windfall of information from his civil war pension file from the National Archives in D.C. when it turned out he was indeed the man I was looking for. So far, from the mostly handwritten accounts, I have been able to glean: William J. Yourex b. 11 Jul 1842 Kingston ON d. 10 Aug 1918 Lakeview Oregon m. 30 Nov 1865 Grand Rapids Michigan to Fannie J. Coots, at the residence of a minister div. 28 Nov. 1881 Detroit-Becker Co. Minnestota Mabel born February 1867 Mary J. born August 1869 William born June 1870 Minnie born July 12 1874 m2. 29 May 1901 Portland Oregon to Catherine Wilson d. March1907 W-Astoria OR As of July 11, 1912, his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Jackson Mich. 1865, Barry Co. Mich. 1871, Hillsdale Mich. 1872, Ionian Co. Mich. 1875, Decker Co. Minnesota 1877, Spokane Wash. 1880, Pacific Co. Wash. 1901, Walla Walla Wash. 1907, Manila P.I. 1908, Honolulu since Those are most of the dates. There is plenty of supporting material regarding his health and people trying to contact him through the pension office. I'm just glad he was the right guy. We've now got a lot more factual information to work with. Transcribing the rest of the written accounts will be a midwinter project. I would be grateful for any other information you have to share. I have submitted a query regarding census records 1851 in Kingston. That will likely lead to a member of the Yerex family. United Empire Loyalists who fled New York in the 1780's Patrick Hartnett Vancouver BC The 1870 census for the inhabitants of Baltimore, in the County of Barry, state of Michigan, on the 28th day of June, 1870 James Yourex, age 30, occupation Farmer, born Canada West, value of real estate $600, value of personal estate $200, Male Citizen of U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards. Shaw who was born April 1899 and passed away September 2000. About 1994 I bought an old family quilt from her. The museum in Helena, Mt. is putting together a book of antique quilts from old Montana Pioneers. They have asked me to let them take a picture of it for the book and to give information about the lady I purchased it from. I thought there would be something in her obituary to further the information I already have. Sincerely, Jean
