I've "rescued" an old photograph identified only with the name Mr. A. H. RICE of Latah, Spokane Co., Washington. The photograph is of two women and was taken at the Flaten Studio in Moorhead, MN. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with the younger woman in her teens and the other woman in her 40's at the time. In addition to his name there are instructions on the back of the photograph for another photograph of just the younger woman and a studio in Spokane, WA as well. I believe that this is a photograph of Mr. RICE'S wife and her Mother. I believe that Mr. RICE is Albert Hull RICE and the young woman in the photograph is his wife Ada WHITMARSH. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Ada Coddie "Edith" WHITMARSH was b. 1876 in Minnesota to parents George William WHITMARSH (1847-1915) and Mary Jane FLETCHER (b. 1 May 1852 Wisconsin-d. 26 Dec 1907 in Montana - dau of Henry FLETCHER and Elizabeth MINDER). Ada was one of 7 children born to this couple including, Millie F.; George Alfred; William; Ada; Elizabeth; Mildred; and Effie Jane WHITMARSH, all born between 1871 and 1882. Ada married Albert Moses Hull RICE (b. 6 Feb 1866 in Douglas Co. OR - son of John Evans RICE and Martha Jane LINVILLE) on 19 Mar 1894 in Kootenai, ID. The couple had 4 children including, Unnamed Son; Myrtle Ivy; Floyd Clinton; and John William RICE, all born between 1896 and 1906 in Latch, WA; Missoula, MT; and Kootenai, ID. Her husband Albert died 6 May 1945 in Missoula Co. MT and Edith d. 1942 and is buried in the Ronan Cemetery in Ronan, MT. Census records provide the following information: 1880 census of Moorhead, MN: Geo W. WHITMARSH, age 34, a Hotel Keeper, born England, parents born England/WI Jane WHITMARSH, wife, age 31, Keeping House, born WI, parents born England/WI Geo A. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Mrs. J. T. (Isabelle BECHTOL) BIGGERSTAFF which was taken at the Williams Studio in Wabash, Indiana. In addition to her names, someone has also written "Lee BIGGERSTAFF'S Mother" and "Died 2/12/1894" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following additional information regarding Isabelle and her family as follows: Mary Isabelle BECHTOL was b. 24 Apr 1854 Wabash Co. IN to parents Nelson BECHTOL (b. Aug 1820 in Morgan Co. VA now WV - d. 1903) and Rebecca Ruth TYNER (b. Jun 1835 in Harrison Township, IN - d. 1918). Mary Isabelle was one of 6 children born to this couple including, David; Eugene; George; Milton; William; and Mary Isabelle BECHTOL. Mary Isabelle married James Thomas BIGGERSTAFF MD (b. Sept 1852 in Pickaway Co. OH) on 6 Sept 1876 and together they had 8 children including, James Raymond; Leona or Leone V.; Ruth R.; and Bessie; Earl; Clark; Lee; and Florence BIGGERSTAFF all born between 1876 and 1891. In 1880 the family was living in North Grove, IN. Mary Isabelle BECHTOL BIGGERSTAFF d. 12 Feb 1894. Daughter Florence b. 5 Sept 1891 in Indiana married into the BELL Family and died in Los Angeles, CA on 8 Jul 1990. I am looking for relatives or information on Mrs. A. R. McVicker of Missoula. She was born to Frank and Mary Gauthier in Bannack, MT in the late 1800's. I am not sure what her first name was. I just know her by her married name. Her sister, Rose, was my grandmother, one of fifteen children of Frank and Mary. Eight children are surviving in the 1900 census.
A baby girl was born in Missoula on May 5, 1942. She was given up for adoption. I don't know if she was given up at birth or shortly after, but a young couple named Delmar and Gayle Egbert adopted this baby. She grew up with the name Martha (she was called Martie) and she died a tragic death at the age of 23. Her only daughter would love to connect with Martie's biological family. Delmar (the adoptive father) came from a Mormon background, so I don't know if the adoption was through the Mormon church or through a civil process. Does any of this sound familiar? Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should look for such a record? Are their birth indexes for Missoula? Montana? Martie's daughter want's nothing from the biological family except to learn the family tree and exchange photographs. If you can suggest ANY avenues of research, I would LOVE to hear from you. I am interested in "old" Louis or Louie Brun/Brown. He married Emily, daughter of a Kalispel Indian Chief. He was born about 1811 in Quebec. I have info on him from the 1860,1870 and 1880 census. An entry on FamilySearch (LDS) indicates he died in Montana 17 Mar 1889, but I have no proof of that. I also have copies of mentions here and there in Montana history books, but what I am really looking for is enough information that I can trace him back to his parents. If anyone has info on Emily's parents, that would be fantastic. All I have been able to find is: Goshea, Goetsche, Tchitaoslii, etc., but nothing definitive and nothing about the Chief. Emily died 14 May 1904 in Montana Thanks, Margie
Hello! I am a historian of technology at the University of Virginia. I'm writing a book on the history of American voting technologies. I've been trying to track down information on the Montana Vote Registering Co., which was incorporated in Montana in 1893, I believe, with an astounding $5 million in capital. In what follows, I'll tell you what I know about this company, including the names of the incorporators, officers, board of directors, and of course the inventor. If anyone has any information or knows of sources to pursue, I'd be much obliged to hear from you. The inventor's name is Kennedy Dougan. He obtained 4 U.S. patents for a punch-card voting system; the first two, issued in 1890, were followed by improved versions, issued in Dec., 1892: "Ballot-holder" No. 440,545 (Nov. 11, 1890) "Mechanical ballot and ballot-holder" No. 440, 547 (Nov 11, 1890) "Ballot-holder for voting machines" No. 488,937 (Dec. 27, 1892) "Vote-registering machine" No. 488,938 (Dec. 27, 1892) These patents describe an innovative voting system that anticipated the punch-card systems of the 1970s. Voters prepared their ballots by inserting them in a ballot holder and then punching holes next to their preferred candidates' name. The ballots were read at the precinct by a machine equipped with hundreds of tiny needles; after a ballot was inserted into the machine, the counters would increment if a needle dropped through one of the perforations. Although it's impossible to tell from a patent alone, I must say that I have my doubts about whether the described device would have worked reliably. I have not located any surviving artifacts. In 1893, the Montana Vote Registering Co. was incorporated in Montana. The incorporators were: Kennedy Dougan Miles Mix Edward Lindsly W.P. Brayton Wm. H. Houston A.J. Urlin Wm. H.H. Dickinson H.M. Ogden The officers and board members were: Wm. H. Houston, President (ex-Sheriff of Missoula County) Miles Mix, Vice-President (proprietor of the European Hotel) Edward Lindsly, Treasurer (Hickman & Lindsly Drug Co.) W.P Brayton, Secretary (Higgins Western Bank) Kennedy Dougan, Manager and Inventor The board members were: A.M. Ogden, Director (Manager, Electric Light Works, Bozeman) Wm. H. H. Dickenson, Director (Dickenson & Fairchild, Real Estate) John Hayes, Director (Livery and Feed Stables) A. J. Urlin, Director (Real Estate) The company would have mounted a strong campaign to persuade the Montana State Legislature to adopt the machine for use in elections throughout the state. I haven't yet read the legislative journal to find out whether the machine was debated, but it no such measure was approved, I believe, and the Montana Vote Registering Co. disappeared from the historical record. One of the patents was found to be in the possession of the Myers American Ballot Machine Co., upon its bankruptcy in 1898. Dougan resurfaces in Minneapolis, where he continues his inventing career with some success, it seems. It appears (from patent records) that he died in Minneapolis in 1922. I'm sure there's a great story here, and I'd love to tell it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. He'd enlisted in the Marines in November 1943 and left for boot camp the following month. He'd been overseas roughly seven months at the time of his death. The initial news account after Charlo was killed said he "shared with three other Marines the distinction of being the first Americans to scale Mount Surabachi." Charlo wrote his last letter home from the base of the mountain, the story reported. A letter written by his platoon leader, Ray Whelan, in 2004, said Charlo was advancing in an area called the Meat Grinder on March 2 when a friend was hit. "Chief went out to him and managed to get him on his shoulder and was well back to cover when he was hit by machine gun fire. They both were killed," Whelan wrote to Charlo's cousin, Roger Shourds of Polson. http://www.fortmissoula.org/exhibits/ww/ussmissoulaproject.shtml PFC Charlo, serving as radioman, helped raise the first flag, which was supplied from the USS Missoula. Hours later a senior officer directed that it be replaced by a larger flag more visible to ships off shore. Iwo Jima was finally secured on March 17, 1945. Sadly, PFC Charlo was killed in action on March 2, 1945, by a Japanese sniper's bullet. Charlos' remains were returned to Montana in 1948. He is buried in St. Ignatius.
