I am related to a Meagher family from Limerick, Ireland. Emond Meagher or Maher married Mary Malone in the late 1830s in Ireland. Their youngest son, Edmond and his mother came to Australia around 1861 and settled in Ballarat, Victoria. Please let me know if you think there is any relationship.

About 1897 she left IL and went to Meagher Co., MT. She wrote home in 1900 that she was married to George Wallace Greene, supposedly married in Meagher Co., MT. I cannot find a census record or a marriage record for them. Shortly after, abt. 1902 she wrote home that she is now Josephine Phelps. We don't know her husbands first name or what happened to the first. This woman is a mystery to me, as why would a young woman in those days travel from Scott Co., IL to MT alone? Does anyone have any information to share about Osa Josephine Greene Phelps? Thank You!

Geographic surveys were used to determine mineral and homestead rights, and in developing maps. Montana became a Territory in 1864, and a state in 1889 with eleven large counties. These counties were later divided up into 56 much smaller counties. For example, part of Meagher County became Lewis & Clark County, etc. The information I found about Richard D. Cotter does not match the information you have. 1870 U.S. Federal Census; Monana Territory; Lewis & Clark County; Fort Shaw; P.O. Died: 12 Mar 1927 at 84 years of age Index #: Hel 1612 ("Hel" indicates he died in the city of Helena, MT). ---------------- If you try "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness" of Montana, you will find there is one volunteer for Lewis & Clark County who will do look-ups of public records. You may be able to obtain a Death Certificate, but if Richard E. Cotter died in the county Poor Farm, it is unlikely that there was any obituary published. I hope you find the above information helpful. I am not related to, nor do I have any personal knowledge of the Cotter family.

I have been unable to locate them in the 1920 census. Also missing are Emma Ashbaugh(Myrtle's mother) and Emma's boys Earl Henry b. 1897 in WI, Frank Cecil b. 1881, Frank's wife Alice and Llewellyn Glen b.1894 married Marricole???. I have the younger men's draft registrations for 1918. One draft registration list Ace Dailey as employer in Smith River Valley. Another lists Asa as employer but in White Sulphur Springs. My ggrandmother Myrtle died in MT although I have been unable to find a registration of death to that effect. I have a letter dated 1966 that states from School District Number 39, White Sulphur......., School Census Records on file in this office: "Year 1923..." it goes on to state she was age 5 in 1923, she born in 1917, etc...". I am not quite sure if she attended school ! there or not but it definitely puts her there in 1923. I think one or two of the Ashbaugh men may have left prior to 1923. The families were Episcopalian/Presbyterian. Are there any churches of those denominations around during that time period? Is there a newspaper that may have archives from those years? What are the names of the older cemeteries in the region? I have really hit a dead end here! Any information you can offer would be most appreciated! How easy would it have been to miss the family in that area during the 1920 census? Thank you, Dawn
