    3. Another aspect of the What's New page is that it lists concrete housekeeping or data updates independently of the auto dates. I am not saying that automatic dating is bad, I do use it myself but like to let the researcher's know what has been done. Something we may want to look into in the future. We can use baby steps to get there and this discussion is definitely going in the right direction! 3. While having an automatic date change code is nice, the date changes each time it is uploaded whether there has been any change or not. I have seen CCs use this to get away with state update requirements in the past. I agree, if you take on a county, it should be to add data or assistance for researchers, it should not be to collect counties which in the past was an issue with a few peeps in the project. While we are at it, why don't we think about a few basic rules for MTGW? Aside from updating, requiring CC response within, say 96 hours of a contact and no self promotion for paid genealogical research? I know it takes a while in the sparsely populated counties of Montana but believe me, after a while you will get more queries as well as interaction from researchers. 3. I didn't really think that you thought that. ;) I really would like to see some of the county pages updated tho. Each month when I review them for COE, I hardly ever see anything different. Some of the errors and appearances don't ever seem to be changed. It's getting more difficult to actually choose a county for nomination. 3. I have an automatic date change every time I work on a page, so I don't even have to think about changing the last update. I always us a template I made and the auto update is there. You can go to one of my pages and just copy and paste the last update at the bottom. Also, ever so often when I have a few minutes, I go in and at least refresh some of my main pages, like cemetery, census or address just to update those. There is just not a lot of info to find for my counties and I think in the 2 years I've had them, I've only received 2 queries. 3. Yep, I too thought that could happen, but I would hope that our county coordinators would not do that. Why bother volunteering if they are not interested in helping researchers to their county find the resources they need to aid them in their search? I think a few new or updated basic rules would be helpful. 3. Karen, I totally agree. If a CC can't or won't update within 6 months, then why are they even involved with the project. I belong to 2 other states and 1 is great and the other is not. Like you said shameful on such OLD updates. Why bother putting it there? The SC should be doing more or getting more help to oversee sites. Personally when I'm researching and find an old date, that tells me site is not worth visiting or wasting my time. I say 6 months mandate. 3. A What's New can be used for a variety of things including housekeeping, new interesting and useful links or the fact that a page on your site has been added to. I am going to start adding a date on pages when I work on them so eventually my sites will have dates on every page but I don't think that should be a requirement. 3. Not to misunderstand what I was saying...that is, I was not saying that all the pages need update dates...only that it is nice to see them there--it also helps the website owner know when s/he last updated that page. However, I do think there should be one on the entry page tho--required or not--it makes a statement that the site is current. I have an automatic date that updates on my pages so whenever I do go in and make a change, big or small, it changes the date and I don't have to worry about it.
